    Jason BBQ's inside Richwell

The first time I went to this Richwell many years ago was to purchase a bag of rice (our favorite brand). I found the grocery store too jam-packed and small; I grabbed the bag of rice which was close to the entrance, and did not really spend time to shop in the store. However, when we were not going to Chinatown during the pandemic and the best choice for Chinese grocery became Richwell in Morton Grove, I shopped there again, and have been happily doing so for more than two years now. I found that most shoppers there are polite and patient (including myself) and would not get in your aisle if you are shopping there, as the aisles are narrow. Like the Chinese idiom says, "Even though a sparrow is small, it has all the vital organs". Although shelf space at this Richwell is very limited and they only have a small quantity of each item on the shelf, they do have a great variety of Asian and mainly Chinese merchandise. I usually get stuff like dried mushrooms, dried red beans, cane sugar blocks for making dessert sweet soups, and ingredients to make Chinese dishes. They also carry merchandise that we need for Chinese New Year's festivities, mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival, and bamboo leaf dumplings year-round (not just for Dragon Boat Festival). Prices are reasonable. There is also a live seafood and meat department, quality is good and staff are friendly. It is a big plus that there is the Jason BBQ's inside Richwell. That is the only place where you can buy freshly made BBQ food inside a food store, and the quality is good. It is very convenient that I just pick up a few cooked dishes for dinner when I shop for Chinese grocery there. Our favorites are Beef Stew, which is sold per box, Salt Baked Cage-Free Chicken, and BBQ Pork (Cha Shui). Their Beef Stew is very flavorful and tender. I always called earlier ahead to order to make sure that our favorites are not sold out. Their Roasted Duck, Roasted Pork, and Soya Chicken are good too. Mrs. Tam, the female owner, and Mr. Hui, the meat cutter, are both very friendly and accommodating. Although the parking lot is small, parking has not been a problem for me. There are only about 10 parking spaces in the small front lot, but shoppers usually do not stay too long, there was only 1 time that I had to wait for a few minutes. Moreover, a side street, Mody street, that is right by the market, provides more free street parking. All in all, it is a good food market to shop for Asian and Chinese grocery in the suburbs.

I love this market. It's not huge but it has everything you need for Chinese groceries and food. They also sell a variety of Chinese pastries and I always get the sponge cakes. They also sell rice noodles with shrimp at the checkout counter, which is delicious. I also always stop at Jason's Deli, which is a roasted meat vendor inside the market. I typically order their roast duck, but everything looks good including their roast pork and chicken.

I love how you can find a Chinese grocery store with a bbq stand in the suburbs. It is a little more expensive than the stores on Argyle or in Chinatown, but you'll save gas and time coming here if you live near Richwell! I did buy some bok choy from the grocery section. They were fresh! I also ordered 1/2 of a Princess Chicken. For $11, I turned that 1/2 chicken into 4 meals!! Very worth it :) It was also delicious! The chicken was juicy, flavorful, and so was the ginger and onion sauce. The only thing that scared me about the Princess chicken was that it looked a little bloody, but I put it in the microwave for a little. I will definitely come back and buy groceries and try some other bbq meats!

Needed to get some Chinese (Lunar) New Year groceries without having to go down South to either Chinatown or to Argyle Street for some stock items, vegetables, and prepared foods when visiting my Aunt this year to celebrate CNY.. Gung Xi Fat Choy - Year of the Rabbit Heard from an old friend that Richwell Oriental Market and BBQ sold whole chickens, duck, and roasted and BBQ Pork to celebrate and open the New Year properly that my 93 YO Aunt had remembered celebrating with her six (6) other siblings, one which was my Dad. So, I picked up a whole Bak Jamb Guy, 1 lb of Fong Yuk, 1 lb of Chai Sui and some Gee Kack Chu and other fresh vegetables, baby bok choy, Fu Gwau and a few other snacks that I found at the prepared food counter. Duck feet and Marinated chicken wings which ended up being some of my favorites. Service was great, fast and simple to order and even if you have broken Chinese or if your limited in speaking either Toi Shan or Gwaung Dong Whah. Everyone is at ease and you can always just point at the item that you want or use the menu as a last resort. The market space is an average size local grocer and it's conveniently located just across from my Aunts favorite Chinese resturant that she is a frequent guest, well at least once a week either by herself or with some of her Chinatown friends that have also moved up iNorth to Morton Grove, Skokie and Evanston, IL. Richwell Market is a typical local Chinese grocery markets that you would find either in NYC, LA, San Francisco, or in Toronto with live tank seafood (Crabs, Lobster and other large fish), seafood on ice like shrimp, scallops, whole fish and mussels. They also have a large meat counter that you'll find pork, beef and poultry and aisles and aisles of frozen foods and stock items both canned and packaged. From noodles, spices, sauces, snacks to candies and kitchen goods like butane side burners, rice cookers and woks .... If you need it, you should be able to find it here. Tip: The parking lot is very small but you can park either on Dempsey or on the side street. Highly recommend coming if you don't want to fight the traffic to get New Chinatown/Vietnamese town on Argyle St or head down South to Chicago's iconic Chinatown on Wentworth and Cermak Road.

They have delicious duck and charsui. With the guy would wear gloves though. I make yummy duck noodle soup with greens. So delicious .

Note the change on the expiration date! I was here on 9/1/2022! The original expiration date date is 9/3/2021! OMG!!!

Decided to tell everyone to be careful when you go there to do Asian grocery shopping! I wasn't going to write anything but decided to do something about this! I was looking around and saw this item and noticed that they changed the expiration date on it! I was so disappointed and just left! Sorry didn't get too many photos!

A great little Chinese market in the suburbs. It's nice that we don't have to go all the way to Chinatown or Argyle (Vietnamese Town) to get a Roasted duck of bbq pork. The prices for the food in the front is also very reasonable. The market itself is small overall and yes parking is limited but there's parking on the side street right next to it and I've never had a problem not being able to park so that's not really a big deal and even though it's small the market is still usually busy whenever I go there. They have a variety of fresh vegetables, frozen items, cookware, etc in a small space. I would call it an express market/Chinese grocery store that has all of the essentials.

Not really the best Chinese food market out there, but this is really your best choice in the Chicago suburbs if you're looking specifically for Chinese items and aren't looking to run into Chinatown. There are some drawbacks to this market -- the aisles are small, everything is jam packed, parking is very limited, selection is kind of limited, etc. Huge Korean markets like Assi, Joong Boo, and H-Mart provide a much larger selection of meats, vegetables, fruits, sauces, etc. not too far from here. On the other hand, if you're looking for Chinese bakery goods, they have a bit more selection here than other suburban Chinese grocery stores. If you're looking for Chinese BBQ, this is probably the only place in the suburbs that makes it fresh (without going far west like Naperville or Aurora). If you're looking for mooncakes, this is one of the places that will carry a larger selection of Hong Kong brands rather than Taiwanese or Chinese selections. If you are looking for prepared foods like rice noodle or sticky rice, this is one of the few places that also carries a full assortment of these items. Stuffed within the store is also a nice selection of teas, frozen foods, home goods, live seafood, fresh meats, and other items you'd expect from a Richwell Market. They may not be the best quality, but this will save you a trip into the city. Overall, it's really your only choice when searching for Chinese specialty goods, particularly of Hong Kong/Cantonese style without going into the city. But, objectively not that impressive of a market -- even if it's only measured against other small Chinese specialty stores, as the mainstream stores like Heinens, Garden Fresh, Jewel, Mariano's, Costco, etc. stock an increasingly better selection of Chinese goods.

Great chineese grocery and BBQ! Maybe not quite Chinatown quality, but better than having to fight traffic into downtown.

Best bbq around. In my opinion it's better than what you can get in Chinatown or Asiatown. Prices are more moderate. Family owned.

Mark Kurlansky It is my mission while I am residing in the northwest Chicago suburbs to submerse myself in the cultural treasure trove around me and experience as much as I can, as fast as I can. Finding the best and most authentic international groceries (and conversing with the owners and patrons inside) is one of the best means to do this, I have found. On my way to Assi (a Korean grocery), I saw the Zander Import Groceries sign with the curious winged lion. "Another time," I thought. But, it ate at me while I was shopping at Assi. So, I read a few Yelp reviews in the parking lot and decided to endure the six o'clock traffic on Milwaukee Ave and drive back there. The reviews said bread and pickles, try the bread and pickles. That was the mission. I believe it not chance that Zander was grinding fresh Turkish Coffee beans for another customer as I walked in. The smell was inviting and immediately perked me up. Now I know I'll come back when I have coffee drinking guests to entertain. There are plenty of good Indian, Pakistani, and Persian stores within a few miles of Zander Import Groceries, but Zander earns his relevance due to certain specific Assyrian goods he offers. The breads are acquired from bakeries in Skokie and Chicago, and the quality is good. The lavash was particularly nice, but the heavily floured crust left me wanting some of that coffee to wash it down. The Assyrian bread had a great bite and reminded me of a doughnut without sugar. (Does that make sense?) A kind gentleman patron directed me to a spicy homemade pickle of cabbage, carrot, and spices. I must say, it was delicious and I hope my husband loves it as much as I do. Zander also had some imported pickles and olives which looked fascinating. There were other staples, too, as you can see from my photos. This shop is definitely needed and earns its place with some unique offerings.
