LOCATION: Wargo leases land that is part of the Southbury Training School property, a campus that was once a fully self-sustaining community. I first came upon it on in 2020 on my way to the nearest highway, and was surprised to find activity in an otherwise abandoned-looking area of the vast property -- at height of a pandemic no less! The orchard is located behind some agricultural structures that reflect a more active past, and invite some interesting photo opportunities. CONCEPT: The founder of Hidden Gem Orchard, James Wargo, has expertise in soil management and crop production. Wargo works closely with esteemed Cornell University pomologist, Ian Merwin, PhD, to grow both new and antique varieties of apples. EXPERIENCE: As a result, a visit is like opening a treasure chest of uncommonly seen and tasted apples, such as Esopus Spitzenberg, a favorite of Thomas Jefferson. They have a huge selection of pumpkins and their prices are better than some other farms. The hayride is free and it takes you around the farm. One of our favorite things is seeing the farm animals. They have 2 pigs, several sheep, a cow, several chickens, and a llama. The sheep are really cute. We've never tried the corn maze, but it looks fun! The staff at this farm are so friendly and welcoming! They are wonderful and that's one of the reasons why we come back every year! This farm is great because there's no unnecessary fees, and no large crowds. It feels very down to earth, friendly, and local. We haven't had the chance to try their eggs, but hear from friends that their eggs are great and they sell out quickly, which makes sense. Sometimes, they have fresh veggies out for sale too. It's a cash or check honor system, which is a miracle to still find these days... and something very special that every child should get to experience, understand and appreciate. When cows are out in the pasture enclosure closer to the dairy store entrance area, this is also very cool to see.

With a little more amping, the flavor could be amazing! If you are in the area and want a nice pleasant outing this is the spot, but don't count on being wowed by the ice cream flavor.

What an amazing experience we had this weekend at this campground! We visited during Father's Day…read moreweekend, which also happens to be bear mating season, so just know, you will see bears. From what we heard, bear sightings are common throughout the season. This is an off-grid campground, although there are water pumps in some areas and plenty of pit toilets throughout the campground. Park Rangers drive through every couple of hours until around 9 PM. The location is absolutely beautiful, check-in was easy, and firewood was available for $7 per bundle. Each campsite comes with its own fire ring. We stayed at site #38 and had gorgeous views. It was shady, peaceful, and in a great location. We also noticed that sites #11 and #12 looked very nice. We didn't get a chance to explore the entire park because we mainly wanted to relax, but you can easily walk the campground roads and explore the different camping areas. Around our site there was plenty of space for kids to play, and site #42 looked like it had a whole area to itself. We will definitely be coming back! Don't forget your bear spray. At night, especially the first night, the sounds of nature made it feel like you were in the middle of a jungle! The second night was much quieter. Highly recommended for anyone looking to unplug, relax, and enjoy the outdoors.

Sone of the trails get you to views of the Catskills and Taconic mountains. There are a lot of streams, and lots of places for grills and cooking. The land once belonged to the Scatacook Tribe.
