Kettle chips (made in house)
Robyn F.

3.5 nice selection of beers. Service was attentive & timely at the bar. Food menu had many options. The dip that came with the kettle chips, tasty. Chips were too salty. I enjoy old bay but not to hypertension status/ headache. Good happy hour. They have games. Outdoor seating. Bathrooms were single stall, pretty clean but tiny.

Quiet Friday afternoon

It was quiet while we were there in an early Friday afternoon. Only one beertender and a handful of tables. He was helpful. I've been wanting to come by while in DC since we know someone who used to work here. The atmosphere was good. I liked the seating options. It wasn't industrial like some brewery experiences can be. They offer several games to play while you enjoy the beer sampling. My husband enjoyed his tasting which included White Bicycles, Raised by Wolves, and Haxan. I sipped the Urban Lush, a fruited sour. We sipped, played exploding kittens, and had a fun hour+ at Right Proper on our last day in DC. Overall, a recommended stop on your DC craft brewing experience!

Grilled Butternut Squash Salad with Grilled Chicken. Haxan Porter and Big Tomorrow West Coast IPA

A must brewery stop while in DC! Food- fresh and delicious! Enjoyed the Grilled Butternut Squash Salad with Grilled Chicken. Beers- superb! Had the Haxan Porter which was a great combo of roasty and chocolate. Service was attentive. Ambience- fun sitting in the window alcove.

We were looking for dinner before a show at Howard Theater and picked this based on proximity (well its right next to it). Looked like it was open enough for us to grab seats so we tried it out. We got seated pretty quickly but were confused on how ordering worked until someone came to check up on us. It was still pretty busy since it was a Friday night so I can understand that. We order a Burger, a Tofu Bowl, the Fear No Art, and the Raised by Wolves. Things came out pretty fast. Raised by Wolves was hoppy and a little fruity, refreshing for the hot night. The Burger was solid, no complaints, nothing to write home about. The Tofu Bowl was really interesting though. Lots of components to it and all the flavors came together nicely. It's also one of the staff's favorite meals here. Overall, its a good option, especially if you want to be close to Howard Theater before a show.

Visited in August and were just underwhelmed with our evening visit- walked inside to ask about outside seating and our server didn't even mumble a "follow me", just started walking way ahead of us. Mumbled a "the menu is on the QR code" and it was DIY service the rest of the night. I should have tipped myself! I love craft beer, but Right Proper's were underwhelming. That, and my lady spotted the hugest rat, ever, three feet from our picnic table outside, which ran alongside the building to the garbage dumpster next door, but then came back with a vengeance. Our bill was paid (via mobile) so we hopped on out of there!

Very slow service despite not being busy. Cheese curds were mostly just empty fried shells. Considered ordering more food but we never really got the chance and after awhile we just tracked down the server and asked to close out.

Great local bar with large rotating craft beer selection. Highly recommend for any beer…read moreenthusiast. They have wine and cocktails as well. They are happy to recommend beer for your taste, and let you sample. It can be very busy and difficult to get a seat at the bar or get a table on a Friday or Saturday evening. We ordered food, and were expecting elevated bar food. The tater tots were a huge disappointment- they were very large squares , bland, and not crispy. The wings were okay. The cheeseburgers were the best- from the restaurant downstairs- mallard. Huge burger, done perfectly medium.

I visited as part of the full experience -- dinner downstairs at Birch & Barley, then up to Churchkey for drinks -- and honestly, it's one of the best evenings I've had in DC. Churchkey itself is everything a great bar should be. The beer selection is absolutely unreal -- hundreds of carefully curated labels spanning every style, region, and flavor profile you can imagine. What sets it apart is that the staff actually knows the menu. Our server walked us through a few options based on what we liked and landed us on perfect picks both times. That kind of genuine expertise is rare. The tavern pizzas from the wood-fired oven were a wonderful surprise -- thin, crispy, and the perfect companion to a cold draft. The smash burger also deserves a mention: simple, well-executed, and hits the spot. The vibe is warm and lively without being overwhelming. Great for a date, a group, or even just sitting at the bar solo with a good beer and good conversation with the bartender. This place has earned its reputation as one of the best beer bars on the East Coast -- and then some. Highly recommend making a full night of it with both floors. You won't regret it. Ive never been here on a weekend day. Its also great to support a business where the entire staff are deaf. I didnt figure this out until after a few visits and each time, the person pouring my draft was using sign language and reading my lips to help me. Beers have always been good. This time I had a JRA, which is a hoppy lager and very good. Mom had a fancy cola. It would be fun if they did a happy hour too. There's always a burger food truck parked here, but have never tried it. We sat outside, soaked up the sun like two lizards, had good conversation and enjoyed the beautiful day. Id definitely come back again when in the area.

I've been self-teaching myself sign language, and having the opportunity to come here and get some real one-on-one interaction and practice has been incredible. It's one thing to study on your own, but being able to engage in person in such a welcoming, supportive environment has been absolutely amazing. That kind of experience is rare -- and so appreciated. The atmosphere is relaxed, inclusive, and genuinely warm. The outdoor space is spacious and perfect for soaking up the sun, and we love that food trucks rotate through -- it makes every visit feel a little different. And Magnolia (our mini dachshund) is clearly a fan too. She was stretched out in the sunshine, completely relaxed, soaking it all in like she owned the place. Watching her sprawl out and enjoy herself just added to the whole experience. Great beer, great people, great vibes. We'll definitely keep coming back.

Introduction to Friday, October 28, 2022:…read more Continuing my runner-up of original out of town picks for 2022, O is for Ornery Beer Company Public House. Like Saturday, November 12, 2022 review of Jirani Coffee House I just wrote (2 weeks later), Friday, October 28, 2022 was one of those weird days where I traveled far from my home. There was a US Navy band concert at Hylton Center on the westside of Manassas (60 miles from home!), which I wanted to go to, and I'm an AMC A-Lister, so I combined with an Indian movie that was oddly enough only playing at AMC Herndon. On the way back from west of Manassas, I met up with 2 friends at a Fairfax music festival. Experience here: After the festival, my 2 friends & I walked to Ornery. They got food, and I just got a beer as I had already eaten dinner. My beer was solid, and the server was nice. Overall, this was a good place with a large variety of beer and seemed like some good food options as well.

We were seated right away by the host, and our waitstaff took our order quickly (as we'd requested.) The food was delivered quickly and was really good: five of us had a burger with varied toppings; one had a chicken sandwich. Everything was cooked properly to order, the burgers and chicken sandwich were very juicy, and the fries crispy. Unfortunately, the waiter failed to say they were out of slicing tomatos for the burgers (a standard complement). When asked, the manager came over to explain. Later, when the waiter brought the bill, it was $75 higher than expected, because our bill was combined with another table's bill. This was eventually corrected, we paid and departed. While the manager explained that the waiter was new, when addressing the lack of tomato slices, they didn't return to explain the error on the bill. While this is not an expensive place, we ordinarily receive at least an apology when this occurs. Some places go further, offering a free dessert, coupon for a future visit, or other complement to the meal. Not in this case, hence the lower rating. There is plenty of seating, an accessible entry, two unisex bathrooms, and plenty of TVs spread around if you're there to catch a game. No street parking, but the City of Fairfax has a structured garage on the same block, accessed from both University Drive and Chain Bridge Road. Parking in the garage is free for the first two hours.
