Despite coming in for an already beer-filled Snallygaster weekend, I still felt compelled to try at least one DC brewery. And fortunately, I found one that was perfectly right and proper! Before entering, Right and Proper had me won over with their outdoor mural paying homage to Duke Ellington and a who's who of local DC jazz heroes. Upon entering, I was even more blown away by their elaborate and wild indoor murals, especially the dog & cat bathroom art, and the EPIC animal battle centerpiece! Since I came towards the end of their night after the Brewers pizza party at Andy's Pizza, I wasn't particularly hungry. But I did make note of their cheese counter, where you could purchase offerings like Midnight Moon, Willoughby, and Morbier by the plate or to go by the pound. They also had a good selection of handhelds, appetizers, dinner, and brunch offerings. However, the best thing might be that, during the unpredictable government shutdown, they had the option to pay a meal or a beer forward to a neighbor in need. I also managed to enjoy their Brussel sprouts that delivered a pleasant umami bomb with its sweet Thai chili sauce and crushed peanuts. For beers, they had a right and proper mix that went beyond the IPA overload, while also having good ones like their Big Tomorrow west coast IPA. Their flights came at a reasonable price and allowed me to enjoy offerings like their Haxan robust porter, Senate Maerzen Marzen Oktoberfest style ale, and Super Carina Italian Pilsner. Factor in all of the above and a good selection of brewery games and table spaces, and they had everything I look for in a solid brewery! read more

A nice place to have an evening beverage as the sun is setting. I got a pretzel and it was HUGE! Much bigger and better than I thought it was going to be. It did come with some sort of beer cheese that was not good, but the mustard was *chefs kiss*. They were out of two of the beers that I ordered as well as one of the menu items hence why I settled on the pretzel since it didn't seem to be a lot of vegetarian items but beggars can't be choosers. Nonetheless, the staff was extra nice and a bit quirky which is great and being outdoors for some of the last warm days of the year with a good friend was a neat experience. read more

When we walked in to get seated by a host, it took a while for a host to show up. He asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside and it was a beautiful day so we said outside. He said "Go find a spot and I'll see if I can locate some menus." We never saw the host again. The staff was busing the only table that wasn't already poached by a group arriving after us - no one really seemed to be asking the host to seat them even though the sign said to. We waited for them to bus the table and then were given two menus between the four of us. Before the waiter left the table he asked if we could just use one menu and we were hesitant, but he left with it anyway. I hope they plan to print more! Otherwise, the evening was lovely. The fish tacos were good and I know my friends loved the chicken sandwiches. I had a couple of fruity beers and we watched the sunset. The wait staff was kind and masked, which is rare. read more

This is a great local brew pub. Their beer is good. Some of their brews are available locally in restaurants and bars and grocery stores. Their food is good. It's a great location. The layout is great allowing for restaurant dining as well as happy hour (and later) drinking. They have a cheese shop that doesn't get enough attention and they fill growlers. It was quiet while we were there in an early Friday afternoon. Only one beertender and a handful of tables. He was helpful. I've been wanting to come by while in DC since we know someone who used to work here. The atmosphere was good. I liked the seating options. It wasn't industrial like some brewery experiences can be. They offer several games to play while you enjoy the beer sampling. My husband enjoyed his tasting which included White Bicycles, Raised by Wolves, and Haxan. I sipped the Urban Lush, a fruited sour. We sipped, played exploding kittens, and had a fun hour+ at Right Proper on our last day in DC. Overall, a recommended stop on your DC craft brewing experience! read more

Came here for an event and the staff was beyond helpful. From helping us coordinate to bartending and giving people recommendations they could not have been more helpful. You are greeted once you enter and have the change to sit at one of their indoor or outside tables if the weather is nice. The tables have servers and if you wanted to just hang at the bar the bartenders are helpful if you want just a beer or to chat. We didn't get food this time, but in the past cannot speak high of their fries and before I changed my dietary needs, their cheeseboards were always there. Would always come back if I am around or catching a show at Howard next door. They also will help and bring food next door if you are at a show. Their weekday happy hours are the best. read more

We went here after a trip to the American history museum. Fantastic beer and amazing food - second best cheese curds (outside of Wisconsin) and the servers were attentive and food and beer came quickly. The tables were a bit difficult to sit at, and one of our party was in a wheelchair so that made it a bit tricky but otherwise fine. Eh. Where to begin. Came here before a show at the Howard. The bar had a good number of people at it. Weird smell inside. We chalked it up to brussel sprouts and potential farts, and it was no longer noticeable after a few min in The food was okay. The servers were friendly but the service was terrible. I asked for and never received condiments with my burger. We wanted to get a cheese plate. The cheese is listed as half the items on the menu. At 6:30 we were told the cheese section was closed/closing. So we opted for something else. Then we were told jk, the cheese IS an option. But at this point we considered and stuck with plan b. A new very confused server brought someone else's brussel sprouts and wings to our table. Started to set the sprouts down, they touched our table, and took them back. That's, kinda weird. Especially because we did order sprouts. And they touched the table. So at that point, I'd think leave them and get fresh stuff for the other people. Anywho. Two people came over to drop off our sandwich and sides. Neither asked if i wanted condiments and it was impossible to get their attention. Another server came to refill our water and asked if we needed anything. YES! Condiments. Which he never came back with. Sigh. The Brussel sprouts were delicious. 5 stars. We were looking for dinner before a show at Howard Theater and picked this based on proximity (well its right next to it). Looked like it was open enough for us to grab seats so we tried it out. We got seated pretty quickly but were confused on how ordering worked until someone came to check up on us. It was still pretty busy since it was a Friday night so I can understand that. We order a Burger, a Tofu Bowl, the Fear No Art, and the Raised by Wolves. Things came out pretty fast. Raised by Wolves was hoppy and a little fruity, refreshing for the hot night. The Burger was solid, no complaints, nothing to write home about. The Tofu Bowl was really interesting though. Lots of components to it and all the flavors came together nicely. It's also one of the staff's favorite meals here. Overall, its a good option, especially if you want to be close to Howard Theater before a show. read more

Visited in August and were just underwhelmed with our evening visit- walked inside to ask about outside seating and our server didn't even mumble a "follow me", just started walking way ahead of us. Mumbled a "the menu is on the QR code" and it was DIY service the rest of the night. I should have tipped myself! I love craft beer, but Right Proper's were underwhelming. That, and my lady spotted the hugest rat, ever, three feet from our picnic table outside, which ran alongside the building to the garbage dumpster next door, but then came back with a vengeance. I came here at happy hour and was able to grab a table outside. They did have different drafts for happy hour than listed on their website so maybe they rotate them every so often. I got diamonds, fur coat, and champagne and that is your typical sour and was not bad. I was less of a fan of the white bicycle one. Right proper has great beer and great food. I have been here multiple times through the years. I have had the chicken sandwich and the fish tacos. Both were really good and had good flavor. Both are seasoned well and have the proper seasoning. The chicken sandwich was juicy but is not spicy more of traditional fried chicken sandwich. It is served with fries. Is a good portion for the price. The fish tacos had the proper crunch and seasoning. Fish was properly cooked. Beer here is great and they have a good variety of their own stuff. This is a real nice place if your into breweries. They specialize in beers so the menu is very straight to the point. I tried the "senate beer" it's a popular choice beer. It was "okay" nothing too spectacular. The wings were "okay" aswell. I normally like a more well done wing. They looked better than it taste. The homemade dipping sauces were very good and the homemade fries were excellent. Customer service was great. You can dine in or outdoor dining. Pretty solid brewery with a low key vibe. The patio is aesthetic and dog friendly. I tried the senator lager and the li'l wit and liked both. All drafts were $7.27 which I felt was reasonably priced. Location: Located in the Shaw neighborhood, next to the historic Howard Theatre. Parking can be challenging, but there is street parking, some metered. There was a parking garage next door, but I think it was for local residence only. This is City life. Atmosphere: Friendly and welcoming. There was a small outdoor sitting area and a lot of seats inside. It was dimly lit, even in the afternoon, but cozy. The atmosphere was lively and loud. There was a DJ and private party in the back of the restaurant; as such, we were told that we couldn't sit at the bar because of the party, so we were placed at a small table by the front door next to (on top of) the hostess stand. I was disappointed by my physical limitations. The building is very trendy with a lot of interesting artwork that I hoped to explore. That didn't happen. I did capture a few shots on the way to and from the bathroom as I passed by the party. Food They have a very limited menu, and due to our recent poor eating habits, we decide to go for the salads. They come in whole and half portions. My husband had the whole order of the kale salad with brussels sprouts, radicchio, bosc pear, candied pecans, roasted sweet potatoes, tri-color quinoa, goat cheese, white balsamic vinaigrette. I don't care for kale, but it was not bitter at all. It was sweet and had a lot of flavor. It made me rethink kale. I ordered the half size, grilled Caesar salad with grilled romaine, bacon, cherry tomatoes, croutons, Parmesan, charred lemon, and Caesar dressing on the side. I added grilled chicken. Described as a juicy, hoppy, fruity, medium-bodied, aromatic, dry-hopped pale ale. Very hoppy and citrusy. My husband described it best, the taste was offensive. SHIPS PASSING |Aromatic Brett Pale Ale| 5.0% abv | 13.5oz Tulip | $6.36. Described as citrus, tropical, snappy, bright and fruity hops that are the star of the show. It was very hoppy, and bitter. Even more offensive to our taste buds. There was no standing ovation for this star. We finished our beers because we bought them but had no desire to try any more. In my opinion, they need more maturing. Service Our waitress was very nice and visited our table frequently to check on us and to replenish our water; we received our salads in a timely manner. The first thing I notice walking into Right Proper is that it's women-owned and LGBTQ+ friendly. We got seated pretty fast. It was a quiet night. Right proper does use toast tab so you order and pay for everything off your phone. The staff was attentive and kept refilling our water. The food arrived very quick which was concerning. Came in on a Saturday afternoon with a large group for a birthday and they were able to easily accommodate us among a couple tables in the back. I tried the herbaliscious saison that tasted a lot like tea and was a bit flat; not my favorite from them. I switched to Raised by wolves with most of our group which has great drinkability for a pale ale. We got some fries, cauliflower and wings to snack on which were all delicious and crispy. We went at around 3pm on a Friday and had great service. The cheese selection is a nice treat! I had to get some beer and cheese to take back to the Air BNB for late night snacks after seing a show. On my last day in Washington DC, my boyfriend and I thought we would check this spot out since we were staying next to this place. Honestly, I wish we hadn't gone in. While the aesthetics were pleasing to the eye and the live music playing made this place hip, the sound mixed with everyone talking made it sound like racket. Ordered a hamburger, fries with an ice tea. This is where my problem started with my order. First, no one came to check on how my table was doing, if there was anything needed. Caught another server and asked about getting another ice tea. He never came back, as several minutes passed. I then approached the counter to ask about getting a refill and was told it would take a long time because they were brewing the ice tea and by the time it comes, it will be served warm. I asked for a substitute, lemonade. At this point, I asked for a glass, plus a to-go cup. They said they would bring it but it never came. One you sit, you order and pay via phone and will be left forgotten. Then again, maybe it was just my table. Maybe perhaps because no tab was open or drinks were ordered, other than ice tea. They also sell merchandise and their own brews to take home. Edit: Also want to add that they have unisex restrooms with the sink in the stall (which was both very cool and confusing when I first stepped in to wash my hands). It's so hard to understand how businesses are operating with covid. Some have indoor capacity restrictions but some seem to be furthering the restrictions themselves. Right Proper is one of them. MAKE A RESERVATION. The host was like "ohhh ehhhh sorryyyyyy were at capacity you can.... I mean... sit outside??" Even though it was off hours (around 3:30pm on a Friday) and there were maybe 10 people inside TOTAL? We weren't allowed to sit inside. Instead they had us sit outside under their hanging heat lamps that worked more as a light than any source of warmth. But it was more the principal of like... they were not at capacity. And it was hailing on and off outside like come on. You scan the QR code and order/pay right from your phone. Which is usually fine but being outside no one is around to ask any sort of questions to so there's that. The two beers we got (the senate lager and whatever mine was that was supposed to be fruity/ some sort of ale) were just okay. Honestly nothing special regardless of the cold. The tomato soup- stellar, a huge portion very creamy and really great flavor. The Brussel sprouts- phenomenal, crunchy, roasted up real well, that tangy sauce on top was everything. The cheese curds- light and fluffy like hush puppies. From what I could see from the inside, really cute. Murals on the walls. Your classic hipster micro brewery. TLDR: Food is good - Service slow. The restaurant is cute but there is a large grouping of unhoused people directly across the street and the road isn't lit well, so it's not easy to tell if they are open. We were sat immediately and all the servers were just chatting and laughing for quite a while. Then when the hostess told us she was going to "remind" our server that we were here the server proceeded to pull out her phone and start scrolling to show things to the hostess. They stood around laughing for a bit and eventually the hostess brought us water and apologized. When the server finally came over she seemed annoyed and was not friendly at all. The food came out fast and was delicious, but I do not recommend if you are trying to catch a show at the Howard or if you have somewhere to be later. read more

Came here on a whim on a random Saturday day by myself. I had passed by this place numerous times before but it was always closed, so finally I waited until it would be open and went. And boy am I glad I had done so. Went around 3pm. It was not too crowded. I love the fact that the front has seated tables and a bar and the back is more like high tables / bar tables, standing room, etc with a second bar that people can hang out at. I sat at the back bar, between two couples. I was doing the "drink alone" thing in hopes of mingling with other humans. I ordered the Brotherfish beer, mostly because it tasted AMAZING (10/10 FOR SURE), but also partly because it had the highest alcohol content. I'm not going to lie, but these beers with high alcohol content always taste amazing. The bartender was amazingly nice and attentive. They allow you to taste the beers, in moderation of course. I have had "Raised by Wolves" during beer yoga once and absolutely loved that one too. Will be my go-to next time (if I'm not too concerned about the "lower" alcohol content) I ended up running into some people I knew and spent the rest of my time with them which was really fun. By the time I left around 5pm, it was in full blast, crowded but not overwhelmingly so. Overall, I absolutely LOVED the beer and the atmosphere at "Right Proper Brewing Company" and I absolutely love that it is so close to my new home. In fact, less than a week later, I returned with another friend who had never been. I gave myself the opportunity to try the beer with the next highest alcohol content (Vintage Vinum Sabbathi) and I'm not going to lie, by far the worst beer I have ever tasted. Just NOT for me. After my friend tried "BrotherFish" we ended up both ordering that, again (for me). To eat, I ordered the fried green tomatoes. It was a HUGE stack of them with some delicious chipotle mayo. I would rate the meal as 7/10. Very tasty but not necessarily the very best I've ever had. Will I be coming back? Absolutely! I cannot wait to bring all my new friends here. read more

STARTER: Beer Battered Cheese Curds with spicy ranch - $8 *I've never had cheese curds and these were like mozzarella sticks on a new level, less batter, more cheese and that spicy ranch sauce was amazing! ENTREES: Cubano - $14 braised pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, spicy mustard, hoagie roll *the meats were very dry but the flavors were there, didn't love the hoagie roll wished they used a different type of bread Wood-Grilled Boneless Pork Chop - $18 bacon braised kale, grits, preserved apples, bourbon honey apple cider sauce *sometimes when you get a thick piece of chicken or pork restaurants have a tendency to overcook them but I was pleasantly surprised the pork was so juicy and had that great wood grilled flavor. Got a little bit of the kale, grits and apples with the pork for the perfect bite. Would've loved more of the sauce to dip it in. The dish is huge I still had 2/3 of the kale and grits left on my plate which were also not my favorites on this dish. SERVICE: Consistent on refills, clearing plates and checking on us. read more
