This youth community radio station plays new dance music as well as some Aussie, hip hop, pop and…read moreindie. All the people on air are volunteers, so you do get the good with the bad, but at least all the presenters actually want to be there as it is out of their own time. The station has a great friendly youth feel about it, with great on air chemistry of hosts, informative news bulletins morning and afternoon, chat shows and plenty of specialist DJ shows. The talent is pretty good, with some Fresh volunteers getting scouted for bigger and better things in the media industry, but most are just there in between uni and to have a good time playing awesome music with friends. Fresh hold the occasional party throughout the year, including Xmas and their station bday, which always go off for the volunteers, competition winners and listeners. Tradies make up most of the listeners, along with young people, and you always hear random shout outs and track demands which are obviously inside jokes. A great station which promotes within the youth of Adelaide and plays mostly new dance music and remixes of songs.

I personally like to make my cards by hand, and their variety of coloured cards and markers is great for the artsy type. For those that feel that pre-personalised cards are adequate, they have a huge range of cards for all kinds of occasions. Their magazine range is equally diverse and caters to all interests, including music, cooking, handicrafts and sports. The shop all stocks novels and books, but the range is somewhat limited to bestselling titles. The staff are very friendly and aren't pushy - they're quite comfortable with customers flipping through magazines and having short reads through books. Probably the best aspect of this shop is the relaxed atmosphere, as there are few people in the store at the same time, and you have the freedom to quietly browse without interruption. Also available is a variety of gift goods, ranging from scented candles to decorative ornaments. Whilst these gift ideas are more appropriate for older generations, there are plenty of items that are ideal for younger generations too, such as notebooks and calendars.

First of all, it's always quite empty and I love not having many people around when browsing for something. Second, the shop assistants have always been very friendly. Third, it's clean, open and bright and everything is in impeccable order. And last - and most importantly - they have an amazing selection of newspapers and magazines. Their stock is not massive, yet large enough and it contains exactly what I'm after. I especially love their travel and cooking magazines and always have a very hard time just picking one or two. With book shops becoming as rare as hens teeth, its nice to actually find a place where you can browse a great selection of quality publications. Their books are definitely at the higher end of the scale with coffee table books Kramer from Seinfeld would be proud of. They specialise in graphic design, architecture and fashion books that if you don't feel the need to keep for yourself, also make great gifts. If the pricey books are too much for you there's usually a bargain to be found outside on their discount tables. As well as books they also have a range of quirky gifts and I find them handy on a Sunday or public holiday if I have to go to a birthday party and have forgotten to buy a present. Of course there are cards and wrapping paper along with the usual newsagency fare. I suppose its pretty standard these days but they also do photocopying and offer a fax service. Don't forget your paper and magazines. I've personally found them really helpful when I've gone in to buy Monday's edition of The Australian on a Tuesday - they always go out of their way to get a copy for me when they can.

Mainly hosted by volunteer retierees and the occassional Jazz or Classical music nut, 5MBS plays, you guessed it, solely Jazz and Classical Music. Not only does 5MBS have minimal (practically zero) advertisments they have minimal (practically zero) talking. It is part of their slogan, no news no talk back, yada yada yada, all fine music. The balance, unfortunately, is slightly in favour of the classical, which, although I enjoy, I don't enjoy as much as I enjoy Jazz. I think that it may, however, be somewhat remeniscent of the scenario of "sweets and vegetables", because classical music is good for you, and jazz is just good. In which instance the balance is probably just right. A good station to listen to if you are trying to concentrate and just want a few peaceful tunes in the background. 5MBS can also be quite informative if one is looking to broaden their musical outlook. 5MBS also offers a handy "Arts Diary" which broadcasts every couple of hours (in the breif periods in which talking is permitted) which outlines coming events in the arts such as concerts, exhibitions, performances etc. Which can be helpful to keep one in the loop.

They started out in small offices in Hutt Street in the city square but for the last few years they have relocated to the Western outskirts of the city, to Hindmarsh. In its new home out of the city Radio 5MBS - the Music Broadcasting Society - has gone from strength to strength. They are always broadcasting 'fine music' mainly classical and jazz, and they are also always on the search for new members and subscribers because that's what keeps any community radio station going. The MBS network or concept is nation wide and you will find a station in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra broadcasting very similar music with local volunteers there. Maybe one reaches a certain age and starts to feel the need for only jazz and classical music? It hasn't happened to me yet, but I must admit it is a nice station to listen to, and now out of the city for a few years in their new Hindmarsh home, they are more relaxed all around. I used to love coming in here with Mum when I was a kid and hassling her to buy me random little toys. The range of toys isn't like what you'd see in a department store. It's more cheap trinkets and mid-price action figures that the owners know will sell and satisfy kids for at least a little while. As it's produced on a weekly basis content is more aimed more at big picture coverage rather than more super readable articles etc - though it does have good interviews every now and then. Personally I don't really grab it for a read - some street press publications take advantage of its status outside of the normal publishing rules to produce some really opinionated and experimental content - RiU isn't one of those publications. That said, it doesn't need to be. It's firmly entrenched as your #1 go-to for what's on in Adelaide.

While the store isn't huge, it does have a top selection of magazines across all genres. They even stock my all-time favourite magazine, Lula, which can be hard to find in Oz. There are lots of imports and at pretty good prices too. The staff are super friendly and helpful as well, especially red-head chick (sorry I don't know your name, red-head chick!). Worth a glance even if you're not hoping on board a train.
