This is the best Jiu Jitsu school in the state of SC. I've trained at several schools over the…read morelast 20 years. Rigan Machado, Gerson Sanginitto, Henry Akins (Rickson Gracie's third black belt), Cindy Omatsu (the first woman outside of Brazil to earn her Black Belt in BJJ). The attraction for me is that this school is run and owned by a couple, two Black Belts, Danilo and Jessica Cherman. There aren't many women Black Belts in our area and to have the opportunity to train and learn from one was an opportunity I couldn't overlook. She is a legit accomplished, talented, loving, compassionate, fierce fighter. He is a brilliant knowledgeable grappler as well, recently winning double gold (his event and the open event) at the IBJJF Charleston Fall competition just a couple of weeks ago. The school has a mix of white belts from the Irmo area, and color belts from their school in Connecticut. They had a successful program in CT and a strong women's team. They've been open since January and in 10 months, less than a year, they won 1st place at the IBJJF Fall event in Charleston. This is an academy that anyone in the greater Columbia area should attend. If you're looking for a BJJ school, this one has it all - a great youth program, great adult classes, even a striking class. Classes are Monday through Saturday. I'm so grateful to have found this place, I could go on and on. A real gem of a BJJ school. Danilo and Jessica are great school owners and BJJ practitioners and instructors.

He breaks the techniques down in ways that make it easier to grasp and understand. Jitsu Academy is truly a family environment also, my kids train also and have both made tremendous improvements with their techniques and game.

It's really hard to overstate how much my family and I have enjoyed training at BC Kickboxing &…read moreBJJ, and the positive impact it has had on all of us. My five-year-old son is in the Little Samurais program since last fall, my wife attends the fitness kickboxing classes religiously, and I have been doing the adult BJJ classes since early January. It's not an exaggeration to say that the gym has become a second home - and our teammates a second family - to all of us. Professor Ben runs great programs from top to bottom, front to back, and his team of coaches is fantastic. The kids' classes are disciplined, but a lot of fun. The adult BJJ classes are both intense and laid-back at the same time, and I'm having a blast while getting in better shape and learning a new, extremely rewarding sport (and I'll admit that BJJ is quickly becoming an obsession). I have lost more than 40 lbs. over the past 10 months, and that wouldn't have been possible without the positive influence of BJJ (and Professor Ben's health and nutrition coaching). Most important for me is the absolutely stellar team atmosphere that Professor Ben has cultivated in his gym. The atmosphere is the best I have ever encountered, both in the kids and adult programs (I felt like a welcome part of the team from day one, and that's not the case everywhere you go). And on top of that, the quality of training is fantastic. Whatever it is you want to achieve, Professor Ben and his team of stellar coaches will help you get there. Although there is no pressure to compete, there is plenty of support if you want to do so. Despite having no background, either as a kid or an adult, in competitive sports, I am now testing my skills on the competition mats on a regular basis. The same is true of my 5-year-old son and all of our adult and youth teammates, who do really well each time they compete. It's just a great, supportive team, no matter where you want your own personal BJJ journey to take you. If you want to train hard and get in shape, all while having fun and joining a really supportive community of great teammates, I can't recommend BC Kickboxing & BJJ highly enough. Time to join Professor Ben's team in Waxhaw!

They have a great set of lesson plans with a focus on attack and defense from specific positions. For example, one week will focus on attacking and defending in the mount. Focusing on one position for the week allows you to see and practice the a solid package for that position. The positional sparring at the end of class allows you to immediately put what you've learned into practice to really solidify the concepts in your mind. The instructors do a great job of teaching the technical aspects of each move and answering any questions you have. The demonstrations of the techniques are slow, smooth, and detailed to make sure you know what's required to make the move work. You truly couldn't ask for a better group of students. Everyone is there to be the best they can be and help the students around them be the best they can be. Everyone strives to be technical and the bigger guys never get lazy and just smash the snot out of their smaller opponents or just muscle their way through moves. Some of the guys in the class are literal more than twice my size but they never crush me. I have great sparring matches Every. Single. Time. Once you get your first stripe, you can participate in open sparring after class. Sparring is essential to becoming a great practitioner of the art. Drills alone will never give you the timing and critical thinking skills you need to truly master the art.
