Right when I pulled up, they were playing the Beach Boys on the speakers outside (I grew up in Hawthorne where the Beach Boys are from). Good sign? LOL. About those speakers though.......something was wrong with their radio station or satellite radio or whatever. The songs kept cutting in and out and were full of static. This went on for awhile until the guy working finally turned off the music completely. Get that music fixed, Ritters! Anyways, back to business............I ordered a Turtle Sundae. I absolutely love Ritter's! For years, my family has been visiting the establishment, getting different items from banana split (my personal favorite to share with my mom) to worms n' dirt! Absolutely love how smooth and creamy their custard is, it has just the right amount of sweetness. For the banana split, I always remove the chocolate syrup as I prefer the other toppings more. One thing I must say is that Ritter's often has a seasonal team, so give them a little bit of time to get things down! When I went here just today, I had got a small vanilla custard, and my three other peers got smalls as well, the cups were a good size but when we got them they don't even fill it up to the top. The service was not the greatest. The music was too loud and they were not taking names so nobody knew what they got and were taking other peoples orders. I like to think that I get around but I never knew this place existed and was happy to find it when I did. The building looks like a carousel with several windows to weed on their customers, who formed a single line and then go to whichever window is open. There are several round umbrella tables for you to sit and eat your treats, a few games for kids to play while they wait or you could even sit in your car if you wanted to as there are ample parking spots in their private parking lot. There is some landscaping with strings of lights in the trees for a backyard effect. I had a strawberry swirl sundae which came with two sugar wafer cookies and the vanilla frozen custard was delicious. My friend got a chocolatey sundae and she said that was wonderful and we were both intrigued by the watermelon Italian ice/gelato? Which was as delicious as a watermelon, jolly rancher, candy! They have several options for ice cream treats like combs, Sundays, shakes and malts. There's even advertising for cakes and pies, which are created using their ice cream and you would order ahead and the pictures looked beautiful, but there are no "slices" available for purchase there is plenty of lighting in the parking area for safety, easily accessible for those with mobility needs. I did not walk around the entire building so I have no idea if there are restrooms. The prices were affordable, low to moderate, depending on what you ordered, but the portions are appropriate to the cost. Rittter's is my go to, my- if I could eat ice cream for every meal- place. Custard hits different and it's smooth and creamy, and I grew up on it and am a huge fan. There are a couple different windows- order and pickup- be sure you're in the right line. It crowds in the summer, like most places, but there is outdoor seating and a lot of people pop open the tailgate and eat there too. Mondays are their dog night and puppies get a free little cup. My dog was so loving it. They have a cute "drip factor" scale to advise you on hot days to maybe grab a bowl to avoid messes. The staff there is always sweet- a lot of younger kids, but always hustling. If you aren't a custard fan (flavors vary by day), there are also some dairy free Italian ices. Oh em gee, this place is totally legit. They had so much variety on their menu; they had ice cream in a cone or a cup (which they called a dish here), sundaes, shakes, malts, glaciers (like Blizzards from DQ), but we decided to try their Italian ice and frozen custard. You could get the Italian ice and the frozen yogurt pre-mixed here ("gelati blend") or unblended ("gelati"). We went with the gelati. I got a vanilla frozen custard with mango Italian ice, and it was really good! The frozen custard was super rich, creamy and thick, and the Italian ice kinda offset that richness since it was dairy free. The mango Italian ice was sweeter than my expectation and I usually prefer my Italian ice to be on a tangy side to help counterbalance the sweetness from the custard, but the mango ice was delicious and refreshing. So I had no regrets there especially the girl at the cashier told me it was one of their most popular Italian ice flavors. But my bf got the cherry Italian ice and it was amazing!!! I would try other flavors next time though. Price wise this place was totally reasonable too. We got two regular sized gelati's and although initially I thought the cup was small but they packed it with the custard all the way to the top and more! It was definitely much more than enough, and I was kinda glad I didn't go for the bigger size. For a total of $3.50 ish for two, I thought it was worth it. And the service was wonderful. We went there today around 3 pm ish and the girl at the cashier was super nice and friendly. They are open and running for the year and I am so thankful I discovered that on my way to a national ice cream chain down the road. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a pretty wide array of flavors and ways to make it your own, so there should be something for everyone. The outdoor seating area is closed right now, and they have spaces marked on the cement for customers to practice safe social distancing. Their portions are great and their prices are amazing. I really like the custard and even though the workers are very polite, they are poorly trained, when I get glaciers the mixes are very inconsistent, most of the time they don't put enough, mostly custard and not much of the mixings I pay for, but tonight they barely put any and that's very frustrating. Pretty good custard but I have had better. They do have some good creations but this custard is not as good when eaten plain as it is when in a creation. The peanut butter mountain is hands down my hubby's fave. It is a pretty awesome sundae, but the peanut butter topping here is so rich and the reeses peanut butter cups send it over the top. The glaciers are also tasty, they do the Ted Drewe's trick of serving it upside down. Be warned it is definitely for spooning and not sipping. I'd give it five stars if it wasn't so pricey. This is a rich, decadent frozen treat that I too often forget is an ice cream option in the area. We stopped on a weekend night and it looked like it was closed, after dark none of the lights in the parking lot were on. They kicked on at 10, which seemed odd as they were closing. I think they keep the lights off to attract less bugs, maybe? I got the chocolate peanut butter. It was tasty. My daughter got a vanilla milkshake with Oreo. It was the best vanilla milkshake I might have ever had, too bad to had to F it up with those Oreo chunks. In the past, we've been during hotter weather and the have a melt rating posted. I didn't notice it this time, probably because it was kind of dark and the signs were hard to read. I always find it entertaining because when the melt rating is high, the custard melts at an alarming rate. Can't say I would have ever noticed the impact of weather on my ice creams melt factor - I mean it summer, ice cream is going to melt, but the night we were there it wasn't super hot, it was dark and my bowl was not melting and it was rather lovely. I love hard, super cold ice cream but it is rare to have super cold, hard ice cream in the summer, so that was a bonus. They have lots of tasty treats and the standards - chocolate and vanilla, as well as rotating special flavors. They only had about 4 flavors to choose that night. So when I saw that the Dreamsicle was featured on the daily menu, I called to reserve two pints (they were running low) before rushing out for pick-up. I learned my lesson earlier in the summer when a flavor I was eyeing was sold out. At that time, the staff offered to place a special order for me but it just seemed too much trouble for ice cream. Ritter's is an old-fashion ice cream stand. It serves frozen custard, similar to ice cream (with 10% butterfat and eggs), Italian ice, and frozen yogurt. Its menu includes glaciers, shakes, smoothies, sundaes, and cones. Today, as always, families dotted the round stand, either waiting patiently for their treats or enjoying them at one of the many tables surrounding the stand. I was not surprised to see the number of cars pulling in - summer is coming to a close and opportunities for ice cream are dwindling. I love Ritter's! This is some of the best custard/ice cream I have ever had...they call it Legendary Ice Cream! They have a variety of flavors that rotate but, there is always chocolate and vanilla. Think of this as your typical ice cream place as far as offerings: cones, Glaciers (like a Blizzard), sundaes, cakes & pies, banana splits, shakes, floats, smoothies, etc. They also offer Italian ice. The waffle cones are homemade and the aroma is just wonderful when you walk up. My favorite is a Glacier with chocolate custard and banana and peanut butter sauce mixed in. My hubby likes the Snickers glacier with a bit of caramel. In general Glaciers seem to be the most popular treat I see people ordering. But their custard on its own in any flavor is great too. This place can get busy in the summertime. Some nights there are classic cars parked around. People bring their dogs. We look forward to riding our bikes there! So-so because the prices were on the high side, the fact that its called Ritter's Frozen Custard rather than Ritter's Dairy Barn, and the overall feel of the place simply lacked the wow factor, in my opinion! I get the whole marketing concept of calling itself custard, but in all reality and at the end of the day...it is frozen milk and cream, otherwise known as "ice-cream". I had the Butterfinger Glacier, and it was pretty good, but no better than Micky D's or DQ or the little independent summertime moo barn! This place wasn't bad, I just want others to know that it is more about marketing than really being any different...it does get points for making their own ice-cream fresh right there, having ample parking, property and seating...not crowded like the "other" joints...also this places stays open in the off season, which to me is a good thing! I stopped in on a hot, humid day hoping that Yelp's positive reviews would lead me to an oasis of custard, and it started off really positively because they happened to have Cookies & Cream custard as a specialty, which is basically a home run for me. I love Oreos and I love ice cream. Can't really mess that up. But, well... they left me feeling really underwhelmed... I can appreciate trying to highlight the custard itself (to Ritter's credit, it is incredibly creamy), but this was basically just vanilla custard. Maybe if that's what I had ordered, I would have been happier. If I come back I'll either try a flurry/blizzard or embrace the "minimalist" approach and try a plain custard, so my expectations match up with what I order. This is a good place to get a variety of ice cream treats. We usually stop in to get pints of their pistachio ice cream. Depending on the day, you can get the pistachio premixed with almonds or pecans. A few years ago we would go back every week to get pints of the pistachio ice cream, but now more companies have that flavor located in the local grocery store. He's been coming here since he was a kid, and has always loved it. I can see why. The custard is creamy, rich, and tasty. And it's made fresh, right on site. I love it! I always get Oreo cookies mixed in with vanilla custard, and it makes my tummy happy. I've also tried some of their various custard flavors, and their sundaes - all excellent. The service is always fast and courteous, no matter how busy they are. The best part? They're open year round! I was really bitter when I found out that Dairy Queen & the like close during the winter (I'm from California; our DQs stay open!) out here. Ritter's braves the cold and serves its customers! It's worth checking out, in my opinion. I personally don't think plain frozen custard (or ice cream, actually) flavors, in general, were meant to be eaten by themselves, which may be why some people feel they're plain. When you order vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry custard/ice cream, you're gonna get something kind of plain. It's like a cardinal rule of frozen treats, I think. The ice cream is worth the $$ Very creamy and pure. I had the Peanut Butter sundae, nothing special about it. They seemed to be always busy after dinner time (6p-8p). My family and I went that time and the people working seemed to be rude and non inviting. I placed our order and paid. I seemed rushed by the cashier. I stepped to the side and received my orders one by one. I stood a total of 15mins and my order still wasn't complete. I asked one of the girls cause they seemed to forget about me, and i guess they forgot one of my orders. When i asked for lids on all my orders, the girl rolled her eyes while handing them to me. I don't even know if a review is necessary...this place is the bomb! I love ice cream so I'll eat it pretty much anywhere but the frozen custard here is so creamy & dense it's not like any other. Their menu is a little lacking in my opinion but I can always find something that hits the spot!!
