Louisville is doing some inspiring re-investment into local businesses and I loved seeing how Heavy Meta Gaming and all the different businesses are making use of their unique location within Art Portal. I feel like this game store is the definition of a hidden gem but that makes it feel all that much more intimate and local. Recommend you enter from the Art Portal glass door entrance. Also have faith they're there, while there's limited signage, this friendly local game store was well worth finding! I'm not from Louisville so ArtPortal's concept of a business-art gallery collaboration was new to me and I love how they implemented it in this unique location. The central shared community space is able host Magic the gathering and other card game events which lets you play alongside local art exhibits and makes the small card shop feel bigger on the inside. Super fun vibes with colorful art and local businesses filling the other retail spots, including a spa and cafe. Heavy Meta Gaming's owners were gracious enough to give me a tour when I stopped by on a quiet afternoon. This friendly local game store is just one of many local retailers/businesses tucked away in the Art Portal community space. There's a communal events venue with green space in the back and the businesses invite food trucks for big events. Sounds like they have a pretty active crowd on Commander and Pokemon nights, but I only saw the store during the weekday lull. It has the beta options and some cute toys and stuffed animals. Not the largest shop but has really cool decor with giant stuffed animals at the top of store and almost a steeple like setup inside. Overall nice but pricey place to grab a memory or a snack while at the park. Smartly located right next to the toddler and kiddie land at the middle of the front part of the park.

Small and mighty! I…read moreaccidentally joined a horror book club and now find myself reading a lot more in that genre. Also my fella snagged me a book by local author when Butcher Cabin Books did a pop up at Gore Club one night when I wasn't able to go (he knows the way to my heart is books and cocktails...). So a visit to BCB was high on my to-do-sometime-soon list. One weekend afternoon, after a drop in at Unorthodox up the street, I decided it was time. It is very small inside, but they make very good use of that space. There were quite a few people in there the whole time I was there. They have nice categorization and organization. And having learned from my book club that there are a lot of different kinds of horror books, I quickly had to rein myself in. I allowed myself to get 2 books, so of course I left with buying 3. Book math. But it was just that...they had the editions of the books that I really REALLY wanted and hadn't seen yet at other spots. And a really lovely anniversary cover version of another book. AND a book about our parents dying from another local author. SO LOCAL in fact, that she was actually working the register that day and offered to personalize and sign my book for me! How cool! I also love that this is a family and female owned small business! Ladies supporting local ladies! I will absolutely be back.

The whole place has such a fun, spooky vibe. They have a section dedicated to Kentucky authors, which I thought was really cool. The owner has also written a couple of books herself and has a section dedicated to her work where you may even be able to pick up a signed copy. I went in without anything specific in mind and ended up taking the associate's recommendation--and I walked out with a new book! I love when someone can point you toward something you probably wouldn't have picked out yourself. Parking is on the street and was relatively easy to find, and there are a bunch of other little shops along the same area, so it would be easy to make an afternoon out of exploring. Definitely worth stopping in if you love horror, books, or both!

I also had to check my work email at a certain time and the owner was kind enough to tell me the wifi password and let me complete my short work task there. I really appreciated it! Not only do they have books, but also local art, honey, gifts, and knick-knacks. My mom's birthday was coming up so I got her a cute bookmark. The books were a really good price, too! They have new and used books at great prices. I love the section dedicated just to local authors! They also have chess & checkers! They have crystal and other goodies. We spent a full 2 1/2 hours under his guidance painting in the correct manner and sequences.
