We absolutely had to stop in on our way to Tennessee, as it happened to be Indie Bookstore Day and we are big horror fans. My husband got me into reading This Wretched Valley, and this book store is owned by author Jenny Kiefer. So imagine our delight when we were able to stop in and check the place out, meet the author/ owner, and celebrate indie bookstores! The store is TINY and it was busy on this day (yay!). They had a few different things going on including discounts and gifts with purchase. We found some books we had been eyeing for purchase and some cool gifts too. There was very cool art/ merch related to This Wretched Valley. The store is located in a very cool neighborhood. Having never been to Louisville, I was super happy to walk around the area with lots of cute quirky shops. If you're into the horror genre, this is a must stop!

What a fun bookstore! I came by one night while walking the shops on the street and visited this bookstore. What a cool one stop shop for spooky books and more. They play into the butcher theme by wrapping up mystery books like a butcher would when you order meat. Definitely would recommend for anyone who loves mystery, thriller books! The staff is incredibly nice and helpful as well if you need any recommendations or have any questions. It's always a great feeling to support a locally owned bookstore.

This is the only horror bookstore in Kentucky and it is fun for horror lovers and book lovers alike! They sell new and used books along with kids books, vinyls, and other horror trinkets! I'm not a horror reader but I still found something fun to read!

Hello Horror Lovers! What a lovely concept. This should definitely be your go to place for the best scares in town. I love the variety of horror books, it was difficult to choose based on the frightful variety. I love that they included a free cookie with my purchase. It's the little things that matter. Beware of how much you will fall in love with this place.

These independent unique places get solid 5 stars. They are staples of the community and represent a small and brave portion of business owners who take a risk and commit to a narrow channel to fill a void. Butcher Cabin Books is the place for horror, you will find hidden gems, popular titles and one-of-a-kind items. Fan or not, this is a must-stop while browsing stores on Barrett avenue. Support local!

For what it represents, a bookstore focused on horror, this small space hits its goal. The book shelves are organized and clearly marked. In between are themed items like stickers or tees promoting the store. I grew up loving horror books, and still love diving into one, but I'm uneducated on authors beyond Stephen King. If you're like me, this shop could introduce you to your next favorite.

Butcher Cabin Books is awesome! As someone who loves to read, and especially loves the horror genre, I can tell you this spot lives up to its bloody name. While the space is small, it's packed with horror novels, local authors, and horror novelty items; like stickers, pins, teas, and more. If you're a reader and/or into horror, you've gotta check out Butcher Cabin Books!

Such a cute little bookstore right by Big Bad Breakfast! Perfect for having brunch and popping over to browse. My husband is an avid reader and loves horror, so he was dying to check out this new book store. We came right before Halloween which was fun because the workers were dressed up. They are a smaller bookstore but still have a great selection of horror // thriller books including a fun kids section. I hope this place sticks around for a while!

We were greeted right away by a volunteer working to organize and check-in donated books. One side of the renovated house holds fiction and another holds non-fiction. Upstairs is a kids area, restroom, and closets full of paperbacks. A few tables and the closets offered 3 or 2 books for $1. Quite a deal when you are like me, not searching for a particular book, just looking for an interesting story. In the front room near the register you can find vintage and collectible books as well as new arrivals. I also appreciated that coffee and tea were made for those that wanted to sit and stay awhile. Tell your friends about the Rosewater - I'm sure it's a hidden store. I've been incredibly close to it (across from the Streatery) and had no idea! Because it is a used bookstore, you can't guarantee they have what you're looking for, but the thrill is in finding what you didn't know you needed. Street parking is fairly easy to find. Near food and coffee shops.

Everyone I have met there has been an avid reader and offered great recommendations. The store is laid out in an inviting and cozy way. It's easy to browse and get lost in the rows of shelves. I specifically found myself lost in the religion and spirituality section for over an hour last time because they had such a great collection of books. I especially loved all the local and regional authors I was able to find! I don't ever expect indie booksellers to have sales, so seeing so many discounted options was a treat for me! Everything is reasonably priced without the sales, too. Do not miss Carmichael's if you're in Louisville; it's simply the best!

Over the past two years, reading has become my favorite past time, and I've started buying books I really love (that I've likely listened to the audiobook of) to keep, and I've been buying other books that I'm excited to dig into. And through this, I have tried to shop local as much as possible -- Carmichael's being where I largely go. Along with loving it's selection, I've also been using its website more and more so that I can just go in to pick them up. This proved helpful late last year when I had a few hundred dollars left of my professional development budget to spend. I had several titles I had been eyeing to read for work, and I was able to put in a large order and pick these up at once. I also appreciate the kids section in this Carmichael's. I love the Carmichael's Kids store in the Highlands, but considering this store is near by house, it's proven great for when I want to buy a kid a book on the way to one of my kids' friends' birthday parties. All of my nieces and nephews also got books as part of their Christmas presents. And one more bit of praise: I have inquired twice recently about books that ended up being out of stock, a best-selling novel and a local cookbook. With both, I was able to add my name to a list, and they called when they were back in stock, holding a copy for me. You don't get that kind of service at corporate stores. Louisville wouldn't be Louisville for me without Carmichael's. It is such a source of joy, and I'm so thankful for it!

I was told by a friend of mine about Great Escape as a store in Louisville that I should certainly check out and well, after taking a trip recently, I absolutely agree. Great Escape is a store that might be a bit of a sensory overload for you if you're the kind of nerd like I am that also has a fine appreciation for vinyl as well as comics and even classic video games. Vintage shops are some of my favorite places to check out and Great Escape is now my go-to place for such items. Upon entering, you will immediately take a trip to wherever your nerdy imagination desires whether it be heading towards their insanely impressive collection of Star Wars toys or the amazing display of vintage vinyl records and music on a variety of other platforms. Great Escape also has a great selection of video games from just about any era of gaming from Atari all the way to the current generation of gaming which as a video game collector certainly was pleasing. The assortment of comics will keep you here flipping through them for hours as Great Escape has a number of classic stories that should please any comic book fan and what's even more impressive is the prices are extremely reasonable from discounts on graphic novels to a $.99 section of comics which provides a wide assortment that any fan, young or old, can appreciate. If you are looking for the place to shop for vintage comics, movies, music and more, look no further than the Great Escape as it will captivate you with the sheer amount of treasures you will find and even some you didn't know you wanted.
