I'm not one to typically leave reviews, but I think families deserve to know. I gave River City 1 star for several reasons. The most important reason being the lack of education and kinder readiness there is. My daughter attended River City for several years until I pulled her out. She began Kindergarten several months later, and it's very clear that she has not learned much at RC. As a single mother working full time and going to school I was really counting on day care to help me prepare my daughter for kindergarten. They did not do this. Part of their daily curriculum is to watch YouTube videos in a blacked out room with a projector style screen on the wall. There appeared to be very little structure regarding curriculum and very little motivation to prepare the kids for kinder. I'd say RC is more of babysitting than an early learning center. I would have taken my child out, but unfortunately in Elk Grove there is limited child care available. I wish I would have taken her out a long time ago. I feel guilty that she didn't have an opportunity to learn in a classroom setting before kinder. Other reasons I left were it was messy. lots of clutter messy smelly bathrooms that didn't ever seem to get clean-unflushed toilets and the smell of urine was intense. Inconsistent rules: no junk food/sweet treats to be eaten yet the would have Oreo cookie day and doughnut handouts? I'm hoping covid helped them to understand the importance of sanitation. Update: As you can see below Jessica (the owner)is not receptive to feedback. Unfortunately, this confrontational attitude is exactly what I experienced while my child attended this daycare. Very cold and rude. I never yelled at Jessica. I did however express my dissatisfaction, that's why I took my child out. I didn't mention that above due to not wanting to be hurtful or petty. Just for clarification regarding the morning I brought in the doughnut for my child- I read the sign that was posted about no junk food and asked if she can eat it in the classroom and I was told no. In addition, my child left RC around January 2020 and was in the final classroom before kindergarten for about a year. Since I sit and do distance learning with my kinder I can see where the other children are and my child is just underprepared. I'm thankful that we have a great teacher and my little is catching up quickly. Twits in stories and half truths don't allow for one to feel safe leaving their child in RC's care. RC has an opportunity to touch the lives of many families and children and unfortunately they miss the mark.

Extremely unprofessional. Staff member lied about their enrollment and dismissal policies. Would never recommend the Elk Grove location.

There's so many other centers in Elk Grove (that take child action) please don't need to settle for this place. Sara the owner will gaslight your child before they take anything serious other than protecting her business. In it for the money, not for kids. Said my son was a liar for communicating the way his four year old brain knows how. She shouldn't be involved in childcare. She's a business owner & that's it, she needs to be in another industry. In the video where my son got hurt, an employee walks past as my son holds his eye and somehow no one noticed. No one investigated camera footage or filed injury reports or told his dad or me until I said something the next day (even though his eye was visibly red.) My son crawled towards a kid who accidentally poked his eye. Sara the owner said either my son poked himself or this other child did, because my son fast crawled towards him to headbutt him. My son crawled normally towards him and was clearly not trying to headbutt him, he was acting as a four year old would, going up to someone to play. His eye got poked and she was turning it around on my son as if it's his fault, rather than being a mature adult. He is four years old. The owner Sara said all these kids are like her kids, but she spelt my sons name wrong & I have never seen her. She said think about the other child and his mom, what about my son- the one who got hurt? No one said they were sorry my son got hurt or hoped he was okay. She disenrolled my son without ever asking about my sons eye. She does not care about a child more than her business. During the time he went there my son told me that he plugs chargers in the wall and that his teacher told him he will be fat if he doesn't workout. Other situations would happen and I would ask about them, not accuse. I would tell them what my son would tell me and ask about it. Every time I'd be told that "they didn't see or hear anything like that happen." Somehow no one sees or hears anything here. It's clearly a communication problem and/or not paying attention. I got attitude from his teacher before too, and when I brought it up it was just denied.

We unexpectedly moved to the area and had three weeks to look for a school before the year started. We started with another school which didn't work out at all. After we found SPLS, I wished so much that we had found them a lot sooner. First and foremost, the school fosters a faith-filled nurturing environment. You feel this in the core of the school community among the teachers, the office staff, and the administration. They genuinely care about our students and are so kind and wonderful. The academics are top-notch and are taught in a fun and engaging way. Our teachers are not only very credentialed but have amazing backgrounds in homeschooling and years of experience in many other school settings. My daughter came home with math homework once which looked like something I didn't see until I was older. I was prepared to relearn the lesson and teach it to her when she said, "Don't worry. My teacher taught me again when I didn't understand it the first time. I got it. It's actually easy!" This spoke volumes that my daughter would feel encouraged and confident even as learning gets challenging. The families here are diverse. It is a beautiful community where my child shares things about her culture and learns about others. During the summer, my daughter can't wait to start school as she misses her teachers and friends. Fortunately, the school has a summer enrichment program that runs through July. We feel blessed that our daughter was able to get into this school. I have toured 3 private schools and our local public school. Hands down I cannot even compare. They checked off all of my boxes and then some. There is no other school as special as this place has been for us. It makes me feel confident as a parent that my child is getting a solid foundation. Thank you SPLS for welcoming us with open arms.

The principal operates with favoritism, lacks transparency, and does not consistently follow the school's own handbook. There are serious concerns about bias and unfair treatment of families, which makes the school feel unwelcoming and, at times, discriminatory. Concerns raised by parents are dismissed rather than addressed, and there is little accountability at the administrative level. Academically, the education is average at best and does not justify the high tuition. For a Catholic school, there is a noticeable lack of compassion, integrity, and values reflected in leadership decisions. Unfortunately, things continue to decline, and there is no indication that meaningful change will happen under the current administration--especially with the principal in place. One of the few things I'm certain of on this child-rearing journey is our decision to not only to attend Bergamo, but to stay beyond our initial expectations into the elementary years. We came to Bergamo through a neighbor. After multiple interactions with a young brother and sister that live on our street, I knocked on their door to ask their parent(s) what the secret was. My daughter was a toddler at the time and the conversation went something like this: "Hi. Your kids are AMAZING. What did you do?" Their dad thanked us but quickly passed any credit on to the Bergamo community. We were knocking on their door the following day. Now that I've met many Bergamo children, I know what it was we were looking for with that first knock. Children in this community are confident, aware, curious, generous, kind, thoughtful and, yes, smart. All the things that come with true belonging, which is what you get when you go to this school. (Is it just a school? It feels more like a family that learns and grows together.) Not only do teachers that are not my child's know her name, they know ours. The director (I could write a separate review about Laura alone) knows where my kid is excelling and where she needs extra help--and she is receiving it. When you walk into a Bergamo classroom, you'll notice a few things. First, the teachers are not standing in front of a classroom, they're on the sidelines waiting for the opportune time to engage a student or workgroup. Instead of a teacher-focused environment, you'll see students centered in an all teach, all learn approach. (One example: An older "reading buddy" comes from another class to work with my daughter, my daughter is allowed to visit a class below hers to help with things she loves that ultimately make her feel more confident and allows her to be contributor.) This approach doesn't mean the teachers are an afterthought, of course. My kid LOVES her teachers. I mean loooooves. Second, you'll notice order. The environment is beautiful, clean, warm, clutter-free and designed for the children that interact with it. The children are focused, respectful (to themselves, their peers, parents and teachers), and content. Last, you'll notice this other thing that takes a minute to articulate, at least it did for us. That thing, that sense of true community filled with children that are thriving, is what will make you stay and be grateful you found this special place. If you can swing it, it's the greatest gift you can give your child. I could go on (and on and on and on) about the things that make Bergamo unique and wonderful. I know what it feels like to be that parent searching, so please feel free to email me (mandymarie12@gmail.com) if you'd like to hear my extensive list, or ask any questions that will help with your own decision-making. Or just go knock! You'll be glad you did.

Now, almost three years later, he's transitioning to TK, and while we're excited for this next chapter, leaving Peek A Boo feels incredibly bittersweet. From the very first visit, my husband and I felt confident in our decision. Joy took the time to give us a tour of her home and walked us through everything she provides--structured routines, meals and snacks, learning activities, and most importantly, a safe and nurturing environment. Signing the contract shortly after felt like a no-brainer. The setup was exactly what we were looking for. Peek A Boo offers so much more than just care. Each day includes circle time (songs, counting, shapes, projects to bring home), marker time (drawing, coloring, learning to write names), outdoor play, naps, and consistent routines that help young children thrive. Our son's speech and confidence noticeably improved within the first few months--something we attribute largely to the positive environment and social interaction at daycare. Joy and her two amazing caregivers truly became like family to us. They celebrate birthdays and holidays, and there's a real sense of community. Trusting someone with your child, especially at such a young age, isn't easy--but not once did we ever feel our son was unsafe or uncared for. Joy is incredibly transparent, professional, and communicative--whether it was a quick text, a newsletter, or an email about upcoming vacations or events, we were always in the loop. We are so grateful for the love and care our son received at Peek A Boo. He adores Joy and his friends, and we know he's going to miss seeing them every day.
