Just south of Lawrence abutting the new bypass is 927 acres of outdoors like little else in Kansas…read more The Baker Wetlands may be one of the best kept secrets in Douglas County and the surrounding Lawrence area because its become a mecca of wildlife preservation that doubles nicely as an area rich with hiking, biking, running, or information at the visitor center, or the picnic tables, surely a sight from which to dine outdoors. Known properly as The Baker University Wetlands Research and Natural Area, it abuts the south side of the city in the Wakarusa River floodplain. The area contains 45 acres of native wetland prairie and acres of restored meadows, marshes, open water, shrubby and secondary growth and mature riparian woodlands. Why I love this area: it's outdoor Kansas as it might be unspoiled with some nice gravel paths for hiking and biking, and if you follow some of the access trails which are much rougher you can really get off the grid and deep into park and all its beauty. I counted three massive beaver dams along one creek on an extended walk today. There are literally hundreds of small birdhouses placed all over the park and one walk through will confirm that it's a haven for critters of all kinds. Most folks in town will know it from the view on the south side of the bypass where a mile long paved bike path runs next to the highway behind a sound barrier. And that's a beautiful view, but getting down into the middle of it is terrific. Access from the East where there's a parking area, the far Southwest (gravel lot), or the visitor center on the far West side (paved). This has become my go-to spot for long hikes and I've yet to not see a few others enjoying the same. Well worth the visit. Bring the kids. It's the anti-movie/mall/theme park experience which a little education and a lot of peace and quiet to boot. Pack a sack lunch and stop in one of the covered picnic areas out in the middle. It's a great place to have a gathering, or catch one of the quiet houses where you can enter and look out over a lake so the animals can't see you (mostly on the West side). No admission for anything that I'm aware of. Get there. If you're the outdoors type even only occasionally, this place is a breath of fresh air, literally, in more ways than one. The all dog side is much bigger than the small dog side. Leo enjoys going to both sides! The all dog side has an obstacle course although some of the equipment is broken. There are dog fountains on both sides. Dog owners at Leawoof seem to me more friendly than other dog parks in Johnson County. I've met some very kind people here and of course some paw-dorable dogs! Sometimes the park is closed when it rains a lot, I've gone a couple times and the gate has been locked. If you have a furry best friend, I definitely recommend taking him or her to Leawoof!

Took my pup Jack to this park for the first time as we are new to Missouri. The park was a large…read morearea of trees, trails, and a small section of lake for dogs to swim. Jack is used to hiking back home in California so he loved the open space and trails within the forest. Jack also liked the small section of lake that the dogs can swim at, however the only downside is that there is no division for small and large dogs. I noticed the large dogs would gather around the smaller ones a lot causing some unwanted behavior and crowding. If the lake was sectioned into 2 areas it would be perfect. Overall a good experience and place to go in low traffic days if you have a small dog like me.

Even just to be approached and sniffed at would acknowledge that I have a spirit that our fur babies sense. This park is great. Back in VA where I live, we have plenty of state parks and doggie parks but not leash off doggie parks that span vast areas where dogs can run around and mingle and oh swim in the lake. There are benches along the pathway for you to sit and watch your dogs. The park has public restrooms right by the entrance/exit gates. The day that I walked the long paved pathway to get to the lake it started raining so I had to turn around and didn't get to see the lake. I will go back next time am in town. I went for the first time this evening just to get up close and personal to the cresting river before access is closed tomorrow because of the impending flooding. Now that I know the park exists, i would definitely return for a quiet spot at the shelter after grabbing some food or coffee in downtown Parkville.

Minus the lady who is notorious and apparently harasses and runs everyone out of the small dog…read morepark, this is one of the top parks in the metro. My only complaint is that the smaller area has restrictions on dogs that can go in there making it difficult for owners of both large and small dogs. The large dog park can be overwhelming for small dogs. Although most didn't mind a large dog in the small dog park, one lady was terrified of the fact that Chief (the most calm dog ever) being in there and around her dog. This made for a bad experience as she was very rude and threatened to call authorities when Chief was just laying in the grass minding his own business. The large dog park has a great trail for walking around. A large open grassy area in the middle for dogs to run and play although I would imagine it gets muddy when there is rain as it is lower than the walking area. The park has a course with different toys the dogs can play and train on. The people at the park were friendly and I didn't see any dogs with behavior issues. If you are a dog parent, you have to check out this park. You will not be disappointed (unless the one lady targets you.)
