I did not realize I had not written a review for the Riverside Red X but they are my favorite. I don't even live in town. I live in 3 states away but every time I visit, I come to Missouri to check out their groceries and their liquor store. What a great combination, they also have a seasoning that I can only find here in person. Most of the time I have to purchase it online. They have a wide selection of groceries and liquor options, and the prices are very reasonable. Normally cheaper than I can find it at other places. It is a win win win. read more

This is a really great grocery/liquor store in the northland. The liquor store area is so cool...I go there when I need a weird mixer or unusual drink that I can't find elsewhere and they always have what I want. Today it was orangecello and I picked up a passion fruit liquor for some fun mixed drinks I wanted to recreate from a recent vacation. The grocery store has a large selection of everything with decent prices. They also serve hot food and the fried chicken is very good. This is the kind of grocery store that you want to wander around in and find something new to try, especially the liquor store. read more

Shopped there Jan. 22. Cashier was very slow (from getting in line to finishing transaction: 38 minutes) and confused by all things produce. She eventually figured out carrots in a bag had a bar code after she couldn't do a PLU, she got lettuce right, but then we had a 3 lb prepackeged red delicious apples...she did a PLU and weighed them, charged me $4.54 for them AND the UPC on the bag scanned while she was weighing and charged me $2.99...3 lbs of apples ended up costing $7.53...a bit expensive. read more

Lottery scratch off window employee could not sell me any tickets because she hadn't had time to receive and check the order that was in a case on the floor by the window. That employee was very rude. Tried to call to speak to the Store Director but the employee that answered the phone in the cigarette department put me on unending hold. That emploee was very rude as well. Tried again from a different phone and there isn't any way to contact the Store director via public phone. You will be placed on hold or the department you call will just ring and then put you back into the loop of "select a department". You can't leave a message for any one to call you back. You also cannot file a complaint on the REDX website any more. 1. Red X would not sell me any sheets of scratchers. 2. Reaching ANY management is currently impossible. 3. It would appear that this store will soon be going under because the employees are NOT afraid to be rude to customers at all. 4. The only department that appears to be making any money is the liquor department, and I suspect that the remainder of the store will probably be sold off. It's very sad what has happened to this store in the last year or so. read more

In my opinion this store has NO rival! It is way better than Costco-yes we are members of Costco. But, We are smitten with Red X. The food selection, the hot food and even the decor is beautiful. The Employees are friendly and very helpful. Even though I live a distance from Red X, I will make it my mission to visit it often! I think I just might be in LOVE! read more

Woo-Hoo the new Red X is open and way better than the old one. I just hated going to the old Red X; with it's dingy old building and weird floor layout. The new building is situated just east of the old space and on slightly higher ground, just in case the levee doesn't hold next time. A strikingly handsome building with just enough of the kitsch and artifacts that gives Red X it's 'touristy" charm. With the growth of the toney Briarcliff area and the urbanization of NKC, the new spot should be a draw for the more sophisticated shopper and still be able to retain the cheap smokes, cheap liquor and lotto players that have kept the doors open. A large granite boulder, a bronze "Remington" style sculpture and a refurbished 1950's era fire truck all await you before even getting your shopping cart. Collections are hung from the ceilings, display cases and strategically placed artifacts around the store provide eye candy. The aisles are named for local streets and the humongous liquor area has a bar, a high end room and a walk-in humidor. A hot food counter, and separate lotto and tobacco purchasing aisles remain. A huge improvement; not only keeping their uniqueness - but stepping up their game to be an area destination grocery option. read more

I've never been any place like it! I mean you can get beer/liquor/wine/cigars/firewood/99cent items/nails/cash your check/lottery/fried chicken/produce... and you can ring one of the bells outside. The staff are super friendly and helpful and also is really fun to people watch. However, I think they are upgrading and moving just down the road... I hope not because the character of this place lives with this building with the super low ceiling! Lol read more

Imagine what a candy store for someone who likes to sip a little of this and a little of that would look like . . . It's this place! This place has other things besides spirits - or so I'm told because I only came for the spirits - but I did see a grocery store at the front and what looked like a general store at the back of the store but the middle of the store you can find almost anything you want. From mini bottles to sets to e wry thing in between, you can find it here. And wait it gets better, they open early and are open late. The staff were friendly - helped locate items, answers questions, assisted with checking out and didn't rush us even though we were the last customers out of the store. Every time I go into this store, all registers are closed and a 80/90 year old woman is running the self-checkout. All the checkouts are flashing red with errors as customers impatiently wait for the woman who is fighting for her life to clear an error on another register. The manager is doing nothing about this and is fact sitting in the office right up front playing around on the computer and eating snacks. Why is there no register open in the middle of the day. Why is a woman who can not operate a cell phone running the self-checkout? Today, my register came up with an error and the elderly woman running it just cleared the error without even looking. She then accused me of trying to steal when it was her that cleared the error showing that the product needed to be rescanned. She was just so overwhelmed that she was not even looking. I tried to address this with the short grey-haired manager that was sitting in the office eating snacks, and she just took the product that had not been scanned, and told me I could talk to her manager after she called her. read more

Not sure what's happened to good old Red X, but the staff have become unfriendly and unwelcoming. Every time I go in there since around the time the new store opened it's something else. Today I waited in line to purchase a sleeve of smokeless tobacco. When my turn came, I said "Hi" and was told to just tell the attendant what I wanted. During Christmas time I told a cashier "Merry Christmas" and they replied that they "didn't much care for Christmas". This place bums me out now. read more

Riverside Red X is weird. It's a grocery store/liquor store/pretty much anything else that you are looking for, you can find here store. It's a cool little spot. I remember coming here as a little girl with my parents and honestly, nothing has really changed there. It's eclectic for lack of better words. There's nothing really spectacular there. It's just a cool little spot that you can shop at. The staff are always wonderful though. Oh! And they have some of the best fireworks during firework season so that's a plus. read more

It is difficult to sum up the Red X. There is no other store quite like this one. It is a local version of a Wal Mart without the smiley faces. There is nothing fancy about Red X. I almost feel like I need to take off my shoes and wear a tank top when I enter the store. Nothing fancy. The reason why Red X is such an oddity is that there seems to be little rhyme or reason as to what products are stocked in this store and that gives you quite an interesting selection. There is a standard grocery department. They have a small-ish selection of items. You get the standards- canned goods, meat, produce, dairy products. The selections are limited but you can usually find what you are looking for. The prices are decent and seem to be much less than at other stores. I am sure, though, to look for expiration dates on items. Something about this place just makes you think about expiration dates. In addition to food, Red X has hunting supplies, liquor, cigars, holiday decorations and all sorts of odds and ends. Sometimes you wonder where they get these items. It kinda looks like a garage sale gone bad. Very bad. They have greeting cards, a small gift section and a deli. The deli is my particular favorite. They carry Champs fried chicken and that is yummy. The deli is even unique because they have hush puppies, fries, hotdogs and all sorts of non-deli items. It's so Red X. The staff is very nice and polite. The prices are good, very good on most stuff. I love seeing all the unique and interesting items. This is also a great place to people watch.. my favorite sport. The deli is yummy. Give it a try. read more

Product selection vastly improved from old store and very good. However, not enough checkout stations. Lines way to long.

All the produce was rotten and there were hardly any organic or local options for produce or meat. Definitely won't be coming back if the food selection continues to be such low quality. I'll have to drive further to go to a Hyvee or Natural Grocers I guess. read more

On tasting nights at the Red X, Riverside becomes the third largest suburb in the surrounding area. The Red X has bailed me out of several situations. Are your out of town guests bored? Go with them to get some lottery tickets and a giant pickle. We were able to buy all of our wedding Beer/Liquor here and able to get some great "bulk" deals. My F-I-L drives 3 hours to get the case price for his beloved wines to this day. Two cocktail parties in a row some emergency food items were needed and procured. For a while they were the only ones in town with Sabra Chipolte Hummus. I've purchased several (beloved) Christmas gifts here (don't knock it.) When I feel down I go there to look at the Cobra/Mongoose display and always have to stop at the glass eyeballs/fake teeth. Recently, I've taken a strong interest in Abita Big Bottles of "Save our Shore." A brew that donates .75 of every bottle toward, well, the shores. As I'm trying to singlehandedly accomplish this, they've now given me two case deals. And, to the gentleman last spring who showed up in gold lame' (head to toe,) you are why I go and will always make Red X my first choice. read more

Want to know where retail floor space/design consultants go when they lose their marbles or flip out on too much crack? They land at Red X, and their efforts are spread out for all to see. A retail experience like nowhere else in Kansas City or anywhere else I can think of. But I'm kidding. Well, not really. Examples you say? Let's go shopping for liquor, why I come here once in a blue moon. Red X stocks liquor. Lots of it, and cheaper than just about anywhere you can imagine. Decent wine, beer, spirits, it's all here and a really good selection, housed under the finest low, graying, aging ceiling tiles lit by long, unprotected fluorescent tubes that went out of style 40 years ago. Maybe they bought them here? And just case you're simultaneously shopping for a garish 6-foot winged horse statue, seedless watermelons, some pre-school gifts for the kiddies, cheap outdoor plastic chairs in multiple clown barf colors or hardware you might in find at a Home Depot, Menards or Ace, they are literally steps away. No, like 10-20 feet. It makes no sense. But wait. There's more. Need a Lotto ticket? Yep, dedicated area. Groceries, batteries, a near replica of the Liberty Bell? I don't know what's going on at this place but its been like this ever since I first visited years ago. I really don't want to know. Those liquor prices, though. If you like to stock up on some pricey items, you're pretty much guaranteed the prices here can't be beat, and with what they're spending on decor, care of the floors and lighting, easy to see why. Great store! Very nice wine selection. Usually there is someone there to help you with wine if needed. They also have a large liquor and beer selection. I've heard they do wine tastings as well. Large grocery store that also carries gifts and specialty items. Prices are good. Staff I found to be very helpful. read more

The new Red X is like a big chain store. They have everything in it. They have fresh cooked food. The old Red X had fresh cooked food but it was friendlier more personable. Gone is that homey feeling you get when you went in the old Red X. They had some decent bargains for the opening but for the most part they intend for us to pay for that store. The seafood great prices. If you love seafood get down there during this grand opening. The checker that I had really a nasty attitude. I bought some ice cream that was on sale for 1.99 she scanned it and it rang up 3.99 well I caught it and called her attention to it. She called someone over and they fixed the price. She told them "well I don't see that in the add". I told her if it is not 1.99 I don't want it, I got it for 1.99. Instead of her putting it in the bags for the ice cream which were right beside hshe throws it in a plastic bag. I took it out and put it in the ice cream bag. Next the grapes which by the way were absolutely delicious were on sale for 2.49 a pound she rang them up at 3.48 a pound we were close enough I ran over and checked to make sure and of course I told her these particular grapes were on sale for 2.49;she called someone to fix it but by now she is getting a nasty little attitude. When I paid with a debit card it came up as credit which was okay but I asked her "they don't do debit anymore?" She replied with all the attitude she could muster without being out and out rude "I don't know just whatever it say do." The store is nice but some of the staff need training in customer relation. Some of the prices are above and beyond but at the same time there are some good deals. Sometime if the staff is decent I don't mind paying the price. Mind you, it's not so much for the size of the joint (Although the place is hippo ghetto-booty huge) but it's more so because you can find brands of liquor and wine that you really won't be able to find anywhere else. Wow, Red-X. Just...wow. Ok, first of all, read all of the other reviews that touch upon the randomness that is the Red-X experience, because they're dead on. It's almost like a local version of Super Wal-Mart. Or something. It defies explanation until you actually stop in for the first time. So, we were invited to a party last weekend, and realized that we needed to grab some adult beverages to bring along. It was the perfect opportunity to see what Red-X had to offer. We entered up front near the fried chicken area, and quickly oriented ourselves to where the liquor was, because if we hadn't, we'd probably still be in there looking around. The liquor area is huge. I was amazed at the variety of wine on offer, and even more amazed at the friendly employee who asked what I was looking for, and took me directly to it while talking about wine and the fact that they were going to change their layout so it made certain kinds of wine easier to find. Finding the wine I wanted, I was thrilled to note that it was on sale!! Does it get any better? Well, yes, it does, because there was also a small wine tasting going on, so I was able to try some Chilean wines while my husband got lost in the beer area. I also happened upon some dark rum that I love and don't see very often, so I snagged that as well. Because we were on a mission for alcohol only, I didn't do more than gaze around in amazement at all of the other products on offer. Seriously, everything from fried chicken to "vintage" (not really) decorative signs, clothing, hardware, plants, you name it. Apparently there's also a taxidermy display somewhere - doesn't surprise me at all. $100 and quite a bit of booze later, we finished up our shopping trip, vowing to make it back for next month's BIG wine tasting. Tucked out of the way, it's fun and unique and has great prices. And they come up with the hardest-to-find bottles and greatest deals in their liquor store.
