However I must give props to this establishment because it made a positive dent in my feelings. Rivertown Coffee felt like I had been going there all my life. The young lady at the counter was super nice, friendly and demonstrated outstanding customer service skills. I ordered a Bagel with Cream Cheese and a small black coffee for under $6.00 (including tip). AMAZING! Some places gouge you that much for just a cup of coffee. The physical characteristic of the establishment where warm and inviting providing for a perfect venue to sit and chat, read email, etc... Thanks for the excellent service and products. Heck yes love Rivertown!!! I'm from Shreveport, and I always get excited when we come to Florence because that means I get Rivertown! Their tomato and egg sandwich is insane. The yummiest, ripest tomatoes with a perfectly cooked egg, spinach and a delicious sauce all together on crunchy, buttered sourdough. Does that not automatically make your mouth water? Today, I decided to try their dark mocha frappe. So so so good. Basically a chocolate milkshake with a slight coffee taste. Perfectly blended and smooth. I also like their Caramel Lovers drink! Rivertown was an amazing experience. I have learned to just tell the person at the counter that I am traveling in town and ask for their input on what to order. The wonderful barista told us that the house special is quite popular, with honey and cinnamon and some other things. It was a delicious product. I was visiting from out of town, so I wanted to grab a local coffee for the drive back home. Unfortunately the girl working there was not friendly at all. (Probably because she was there by herself all day.) I got a pour over, and it tasted fine, but there were coffee grounds in the coffee. Also it was filled so full that when I simply took the lid off to let the coffee cool, scalding coffee spilled all over me and my car (I was still parked). Plus the lid didn't even fit on the cup, so every sip it was dripping on me. I had to pour out a bunch of it and just drink it without the lid. It was a bit of a disaster. read more

In those years, Rivertown has updated its menu (fresher, local ingredients from sources such as Bluewater Creek Farms, Jack-o-Lantern Farmers, etc.), started serving dinner (delicious chicken, beef, or veg burritos), and began carrying regionally roasted Muletown Coffee (Columbia, TN), among other improvements. You'll see me in here either chowing down on one of the daily lunch deals (includes a tea or drip coffee) or fueling up with a "for here" 8 oz cappuccino. If it's before 9 am, I'm quickly grabbing drip coffee and one of the freshly made bran muffins (heaven). Here's a tip: call in your lunch order. Rivertown seating has been described as "quaint," "homey," "downright small." Once I arrive to pick up, I either head over to the nearby park or sit down for a quick lunch at a small table. For dinner, grab a craft brew and a very affordable burrito. I could talk about how the owner is a self-made chef, or how Rivertown has the best baristas in town - or that you can sit in here for hours at a time and get tons of work done because the vibe is perfect -- but you should just go experience it all yourself. If there are three things Florence needs more of, it's smart people, thin people, and COFFEE SHOPS. There we go. There are a whopping total of two coffee shops in downtown Florence. Plus one hidden inside the library. To make up for the quantity, at least we have quality. Both coffee shops are awesome. McGraw's is the one you go to for lunch or a quick snack. Rivertown is the one you visit to be drenched in melancholy, sip a drip, put on your emo glasses, and be entertained by the hairstyles that enter. This place only has one flaw: its wireless internet. The wi-fi here goes in and out constantly. On, off, on, off. Let's rundown the reasons Rivertown receives record rave reviews. SERVICE. The staff is always friendly. But not too friendly. They don't chat you up if you're trying to stay mysterious. FOOD. The coffee is great. Really great (same price as McGraw's, if you're wondering). I prefer McGraw's iced coffees, but Rivertown's hot coffee. COME HERE FOR LUNCH. You simply must. And order the grilled cheese on sourdough bread. If you don't like it, I'll pay you back. It's super-cheesy and delicious. They only serve real food for lunch, Monday-Friday, 11-2. ATMOSPHERE. I think this place might be a portal to another world. You can sit and watch people walk by the large windows next to the sidewalk outside, but it's like you're in a completely different world in here. The colors. The music. Old couches. Most of the light bulbs in the ceiling don't work. This place makes me want to write a novel. They also feature live music on some nights, which I have yet to experience. The bottom line: There's no better spot to meet a friend and hang out. Two other drawbacks: Closed on Sundays. The lock on the men's restroom doesn't work very well. I've always loved Rivertown but I'll never be back. On a recent visit, upon checking with everyone waiting near the register, I knew they had already ordered so I stepped up to the checkout. After a few incredibly awkward seconds of ignoring and no eye contact I was hostilely asked if I had "skipped" line. A quick frantic and embarrassing query on my part confirmed that I had not, but no apology was offered. The best I could do was leave no tip but I'll certainly never be back and that makes me sad because the food and drinks are outstanding. Traveling from Atlanta to Memphis and took a detour to meet my friend (who is a local) here for lunch. I had the grilled cheese with coconut curry soup, and my son had the grilled cheese with tomato basil soup...everything was delicious. I ordered a caramel Iced coffee expecting to get my usual black coffee, ice, and caramel syrup. Instead I got a caramel iced latte. Not really knowing the difference I thought "eh no worries" fella making the drinks saw my confusion and asked if that was the right drink and upon realizing the mix up offered to fix it immediately. In most situations you gotta ask for staff to fix your problems, but not at this place! Rivertown, Rivertown, Rivertown. What can I say? When I attended college at UNA this was a regular spot for me. You could walk down from the University, grab a cup of coffee or tea and maybe a snack (I was partial to the blueberry muffins) and get some work done or people watch the whoever would happen to pass by. Rivertown is locally owned and operated and is a favorite for most locals. It hasn't changed much since I graduated back in 2014 but it seems like they've expanded their services a bit by sometimes doing dinners and special tastings. As I've said, it's been years since I visited so I'll speak to my most recent experience. I was headed home to Birmingham after a short visit with some friends when I decided to grab some breakfast before leaving town. Rivertown was of course the natural choice with their small but impactful food menu and delicious coffee and tea. Parking was easy enough (which can sometimes be difficult) and they weren't busy at all. You just walk up to the counter, order and they'll call out your number and put your order on the side counter when it's ready. I went for the Daybreak which is a breakfast sandwich made up of artisan bread, turkey, a fried egg, sharp white cheddar, spinach and garlic mayo. I also got a green tea and a muffin. I couldn't help myself, I had to have the blueberry muffin! It didn't take long to get my muffin and tea and my sandwich followed soon after. What a delight! In my old haunt, with my new friends enjoying a locally sourced meal! The sandwich was very hearty and filling. I ended up having to take the egg off so I could actually finish it! The muffin was DELICIOUS! They make them in house and really know what they're doing! So good and such a good experience! I have to comment on the ambience of this place as well. It's owned by a quirky local couple who love food and the Shoals area. The tables and chairs are old antiques that don't match but it adds such a homey feel to the restaurant. They walls are full of posters for local events and art from all the local talent. It gives off such a an air of creativity and welcome.
