This ever-changing little shopping center seems to be continually seeking an identity. Lacking a…read moretrue anchor, the closest thing they have as such is The Butcher's Market, which has been there since its inception. Everything else seems have been turned over at least once, many twice. The current lineup has found some stability however, and includes the Famous Toastery, Bradshaw's Social House, Hawthorne's Pizza and The Butcher's Market. Wahlburger's is also on its way replacing the unspectacular Lure, thank goodness. Also included is other small business fronts including a spa and salon, Salon M2 and Nationwide Insurance. One very special aspect of this center is its Wednesday and Saturday open air Farmer's Market located in the corner of the parking lot. A Sherwin-Williams paint shop has also moved into the other corner of the lot, of which by the way, is already completely packed during peak hours and most spaces are designed for compact cars. It is a great walk up destination if you live in the surrounding area like myself; otherwise, the parking issue is a major buzz kill. Still, I am personally cheering on and I'm glad it's there.

There are multiple entrances on both roads and intersection has a major traffic light. The main anchor here is Planet Fitness, which was my destination today. You'll find the usual health food store, tobacco shop, cleaner, nail salon, ice cream, coffee shop and multiple restaurants including Latin street grill, poke, and a sit down Mexican. Park once, knock our two errands which is the exact kind of convenience that makes a place stick in your mental map! It might not be flashy but it delivers on usefulness. The shopping center also has a furniture shop, clothing shop and a plasma center. There's even an EVgo EV charging station. The shopping center is on the east side of South Blvd, between Archdale Drive (near the Blue Line station) and Emerywood Drive. It is longer than it is wider, but there's plenty of parking. The grading isn't perfectly flat but I never felt boxed in. Getting in and out was easy regardless of direction. Overall, it's a practical shopping center that is A-OK in my book. I usually come here for ALDI since it anchors the whole development, but every time I walk or drive through I'm reminded that the center has grown into something more than a quick grocery stop. You've got a little bit of everything tucked into these storefronts: a martial arts studio with kids in uniforms spilling out after class, a dance studio that lights up in the evenings, a deli that feels like the opposite of fast food, a tobacco and vape shop, a barber shop, and a handful of professional services that keep the place humming during the workday. If you want something quick, the Jack‑in‑the‑Box drive‑through is right there, but if you're in the mood for something more substantial or just want to sit for a minute, Stacey's Deli is the better choice and it fits the neighborhood's easygoing pace. The layout helps too. Multiple entrances and exits mean you're not trapped in a single choke point, the lighting is generous without being harsh, and the whole place has enough space that you never feel boxed in. It's the kind of center that doesn't try to impress you but ends up doing it anyway simply by being reliable, convenient, and a little more varied than you expect. It's A‑OK in my book. They have a small number of ground-level spaces and a decent sized parking deck, but it's difficult to navigate and even if the traffic is light, it is difficult to get through here and find a parking spot. All it takes is one person to get into their car and suddenly, ten of us are all waiting for that one guy who stopped to wait for that space. Annoying as heck. I have given up on trying to find spaces on the ground floor and just go right to the parking deck. It's not worth it. Lots of great restaurants here and that's why I keep coming back.

Southpark opened in 1970 and Specialty Shops Southpark dates from around 1979 but a lot of effort has gone into keeping it new and refreshing. Last fall when we made a day of shopping at Southpark (this was during Covid and mask mandates) Susan asked me to find a restaurant for lunch. Quick online search and I came up with Bricktop's. Didn't have reservations and a one hour wait so got on the wait list and one hour later were seated. Fantastic lunch with great menu and we've been back several times since then (review for Bricktop's is posted separately) Williams and Somona is also a favorite and have been several times over the years but when I do shop for something at Williams and Sonoma, it is generally at the Birkdale location in Huntersville since it is so much closer. I've been a fan of Sharon Luggage dating back to the 1970's at another location before they were her. A great place for travel accessories, wallets. personalized gifts etc. Two other places here are Renaissance Patisserie which is a small French Bakery with great cakes, cookies and other pasteries and Paco's Tacos and Tequila, one of the best Mexican Restaurants in the Charlotte area.

Back when it was first built, I remember my parents saying it would never last. Now the whole area has been built up and my parents just love it. Most of the original stores have left or changed some how, but it basically looks the same as it did. Strip mall, broken up into different sections. Major clothing stores, knick knack places, restaurants, hotel in the middle. The faces and names have changed, some things have gotten a facelift. But it all somehow remains the same.
