Love this local outdoor store. My husband and I come by just about every weekend to check out what's new in stock. My favorite things to look at are the Patagonia hats, the backpacks, hydroflasks, and pet gear. They also have casual and active clothes, hiking and climbing shoes, maps, camping meal essentials, sleeping bags, duffles/suitcases, and miscellaneous travel items in just about every popular brand you can think of. It's a moderately large size store with two levels, so they do have a large selection. The employees are very friendly and helpful at finding what you need even if you're not sure what that is. I can really tell that they want to offer sound advice to make sure their customers are happy with their products for a long time, and not just trying to sell you something. Great store! The owners provided a shuttle service while I was on a hiking trip. They picked me up at the airport and were available when my hiking buddy got injured and had to leave the trail. I have been a fan of YELP for many years. However, one must read with caution the reviews. My rule is that you throw out the best one and the worst review and the TRUTH is some where in between! Roam'n Around was recommended to me by a friend who lives in Rapid as the place to buy outdoor goods. I went into the store and was pleasantly surprised to find such a wide variety of quality items as well as knowledgable salespeople who were so helpful and honest!! I met the owners and enjoyed our conversation. They were receptive to my comments, were willing to order some clothes for me and seemed interested in satisfying my needs. Rebecca S in my opinion was out of line in her analysis of this situation. To compare this business and their return policy to REI is absurd. Please give Roam'n Around your support they deserve it! Roam'n Around has expanded recently, and this is good since Rapid City does not have many options for high-end outerwear or baggery. The service has been great, they even let me exchange a rolling bag, en route to the airport, when it failed to live up to expectations. I wish I could give Roam'n Around 10 million stars. When I learned I would go to South Dakota for work, I immediately knew I wanted to take a personal day to check out and camp at Badlands National Park. I called ahead to reserve my rentals, and the owner, Bridget, was so helpful in talking me through each item to ensure that it met my needs. As she promised, the gear was all set up and ready to go at the time I said I would arrive for pick-up. She made sure I knew how to work the tent and even voluntarily gave me a discount because I only needed it for one night, instead of the standard three-day rental. She then had someone take all the gear out to my car. This attention and customer service alone would have warranted five stars. BUT THERE'S MORE! The day-of my planned camping trip, the weather during the day was beautiful. Sunny and warm, but pleasant. I set up my tent as instructed and secured it with four metal stakes to the ground. I left the campsite a little before sunset to watch the sunset on an overlook. Around that time, the nearly perfect weather from earlier in the day seemingly changes instantaneously to dark clouds, heavy winds, and cold gusts. It's evident now that a storm is brewing, so I hurried back to the campsite. It then begins to rain. As I pull up, I don't spot my tent. With a sinking feeling in my stomach, I convince myself that my eyes must be playing tricks on me. I confirm I'm at the right campsite and continue to look around - no tent. A man in a nearby campsite runs up to my car and asks, with a worried look on his face, whether I had a tent here. I shake my head yes, and he apologetically tells me that it blew away in the wind. Not knowing what else to say, he hurries away, and I'm in shock. I drive around some more to see if I can see the tent anywhere, but it's long gone. At this point, the wind is close to tornado-strength winds, and it's a full-blown thunderstorm. When I returned to Roam'n Around the next morning, I had my tail tucked between my legs, and I was anxious to share the news that the tent and mattress pad had literally blown away. I told her I was happy to pay whatever price she thought was fair. Bridget, instead, laughed, gave me a hug, and assured me it would be okay. She told me I did all the right things by staking it down and only charged me the wholesale price of the tent and didn't even charge me for the mattress pad. She then asked if I would be back in South Dakota, and that if and when I do come back, she would personally take me camping. I nearly cried from her kindness. Roam'n Around is a locally-owned and operated shop, and I can personally attest to the care and attention they give each customer. Go visit them, they're the best!!! read more

Buyer, beware! I can't account for the difference in treatment of myself and some of the other reviewers, but here's what my experience was. Before I start my story, though, to give a reason for the upgrade to 2 stars... the selection of travel gear and maps is very good. The footwear selection seemed pretty small to me and didn't have a very big range, and I was less impressed with the hiking gear than others seem to be. Also, I very much enjoyed my experience when buying the shoes, because my salesperson was great. A couple of weeks ago I found myself with an urgent need for a good pair of waterproof, mid- to full-height hiking boots... I use them daily for my job and the sole came off my other pair. I try to support local businesses whenever I can, and was thrilled to find something that seemed to fit my needs at Roam'n Around. While I wasn't overly impressed with the variety and styles of the hiking gear, I did buy a pair of boots with the recommendation of a salesperson. They fit well (to be fair, they were the only pair I tried on in Rapid City that day that DID fit well) and were pretty good for my purposes... until I had to contend with the unusually wet conditions SW South Dakota has been facing this year. In damp grass, my feet were soaked (that kind of soaked where you can feel the water sloshing around in your boots). I'm volunteering for a wildlife preservation project and don't have any money to spare, so I spoke with a salesperson at the store about the possibility of their working with me to repair or replace my shoes. He recommended that I drive to the store--an hour away from where I'm staying--so I took the chance. When I got to the store, I spoke directly with the owner, Bridget, and asked her work with me on my problem. To my dismay, she actually told me, in so many words, that she doesn't guarantee or stand behind her products. She refused to communicate with the company who made the shoes, saying it wasn't her problem and that she doesn't consider her relationship as a retailer of their products any advantage to dealing with the company. My friend, who was with me, was shocked at the owner's attitude and asked her if she understood that this type of attitude was really bad customer service. She said that of course she wanted to make sure her customers were happy--without a trace of irony and looking me directly in the eye. The owner's attitude and her personal level of "customer service" was abominable. I really did appreciate the willingness to help that the salesperson I spoke to on the phone gave, but having to make a 70 mile trip to hear that the owner basically doesn't give a crap about her customers was, to say the least, disappointing. So don't shop here if you have the faintest idea of returning anything defective. You'll be out of luck... trust me. You're better off with the care and protection of a company who does care what you think. The experience overall left me continuing to wish that there was an REI within a reasonable distance of me. I will not be going back to this store, nor will I recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the excess money to gamble on products which may or may not work. read more

We used Roam'n Around's shuttle service to hike the 124 mile Centennial Trail from Wind Cave to Bear Butte. I don't even know where to begin. Basically, we couldn't have done it without them. Had to leave the trail because of a serious case of heat exhaustion and they were able to pick us up last minute with almost no warming. Our water filter broke, they had a new one delivered to the next trailhead within an hour. The forecast dropped down to 37 degrees, well below the capacity of our sleeping bags and they had high quality bag liners waiting for us that got us through the night. AND they met us at the Northern terminus with chocolate, COLD water and a reminder to take a picture of the sunset, THEN took us to get what we were craving, greasy cheeseburgers! They were also very careful about Covid safety and wore masks the whole time we were around them. We are huge fans of this incredible couple and will now order all our outdoor supplies from Roam'n Around directly. What a great business and even better people. Couldn't possibly recommend them more. (I'll add that we ran into another couple on the trail who waited for a different shuttle service for 2 hours at the beginning of their trip. That would NEVER happen with Roam'n Around.) read more
