Let me start this review by saying that I have been a long time customer (~10 years) of Rob Rivers at their Mystic, CT location. in general, I have found them to be mostly professional, skilled and contemporary. But my opinion recently changed. Let me also say that I am a career scientist in the pharmaceutical industry, with a PhD and 20+ years of experience; and, as most people with my background in this small geography, I was once (but not currently) employed by Pfizer. In my recent visit to this salon, I had the distinct pleasure of having my stylist explain to me - multiple times - how and why the COVID vaccine doesn't work. Now, of course, I most certainly know better - and would pit my scientific education and expertise in drug development against hers every day (and twice on Sundays) - but in a geography in which the developer of the pre-eminent COVID vaccine is literally right in your backyard, I find this to be (at best) bad business and (at worst) downright insulting. After giving my stylist my best "death stare" (as my husband calls it), she continued to rant on political topics until I literally could barely leave without causing a scene. Having great, brilliant friends who have worked on COVID programs at Pfizer (and who have also historically been clients of this salon AND who have also heard the same political BS mumbo-jumbo that I heard while also spending their hard-earned money for these "premium services"), I take great personal offense to a local business who is quite literally tone deaf to our current climate. Personally, I no longer choose to patronize businesses who so blatantly allow their employees to use their chair to spread their ignorant, politically-motivated viewpoints. Thanks to the supreme court - and a bakery that didn't want to bake a wedding cake for a homosexual couple - businesses have the right to do business with whomever they choose, and this business has clearly decided where to put their stake in the sand. As a consumer, I have the option of voting with my pocketbook, but want to make sure that other consumers are empowered by the same information so they can likewise make their own decision. People are dying every day because of the spread of ignorant dis-information and I am, quite frankly, done. read more

Had my wedding party there for hair and make up - Samantha did my hair and Maeghan did my make up. Both came out great they also did hair for my bridesmaids and 3 other family members and make up for the bridesmaids and my mom. They were on time and were very accommodating with everything (including my photographer running around taking pics of everyone). Everyone was very friendly and the wedding coordinator (Bethany) was also very helpful getting everything set up. read more

I was told my service was 38.00 I always tip well and was anticipating to do so. I was suppose to see someone else that day then they had "Nikki or Niky " do my hair and I was told by her 3x I only get a half hour, never asked if I wanted product in my hair or how I like my hair styled, she was seeing other customers while saying I only had 30mins with her. This is just the start of how unprofessional she was. My last 6x I've seen stylists there never was I treated this way. None of my friends were either. I had to correct her while doing my hair for not drying sections and then she tried to charge me more than her 22% tip for added "time". If her tip wasn't already paid I would have taken it back. The style didn't hold for 15mins. Absolutely awful! This is not a master stylist. This is a master of over charging clients. read more

They are only interested in your money. Customer Service is not in their vocabulary. They will quote you one price prior to your procedure and then when it is time to pay, the amount goes up. If you question why, it is always some lame excuse of putting extra time or using extra product, etc. If you insist on asking questions and or do not leave a hefty tip, then be prepared to receive a letter stating that they no longer need your business and all your future appointments have been canceled. They are only interested in people who are dumb & mute and are willing to pay exorbitant prices - no questions asked. Their attitude is "We are Gods gift to the salon world". I get better service from the company that picks up my trash ! Save your time and money. Find a place that will respect you and your business. We got express mani/pedis here, and it was the worst experience ever. Yes, the building and location are both beautiful, but that doesn't make up for the lack of service. I understand it was "express," (a total of an hour), but all the usual elements of a pedicure were NOT there. Basically, they had our feet in the tub, dried them off, put some lotion on, and painted our nails. No scrubbing or sloughing at all. For the manicures, they did not even push and trim our cuticles. Couldn't believe this costs $70+. We went right over the the asian salon to get everything fixed. What a waste of money! If you want to feel "fancy" but really don't care about the actual service, I guess this is the place for you. read more

Carrying any product that you could need and with a friendly and accommodating staff, the team at Rob Rivers always has me covered. My whole family spends a lot of money at this spa and hair salon so it is easy for me to just get gift cards as a gift. TWICE now, I have shown up (not knowing what time they closed) and they have the door locked and they are sitting at the desk in plain sight. As a local, and a family that spends a lot there, I do not expect them to a) not even get up, but b) just say "CLOSED" and carry on their conversation!! So very rude, and this has happened TWICE!!! I cannot say enough about my experience at Rob Rivers. The staff is very welcoming, the location is absolutely beautiful and my stylist Ellen Mackin is the best of the best. Ellen always takes the time to discuss what you are looking for the minute you sit down in her chair and explains every detail of what she is doing and WHY. I have well water at my home and Ellen offered suggestions of product and shower filters to use to improve the health of my hair and make my color last as it should. Ellen is in the know and up on the latest trends in cut and color and I always like to let her do her thing with my hair. I am one of those who tends to wait too long to return so it's more work than it needs to be for her, but she always makes me feel like a million bucks when walking out the door. I would rather pay a few extra bucks to get my service at Rob Rivers than at other salons who sometimes have stylists who try to service more than one person at at time. I have been here twice, both times for a pedicure and nails. This place is a treat! The staff is gracious and professional, the amenities are wonderful and it is definitely worth going. They have hot packs for your shoulders and beverages to sip on as you relax. Even if it wasn't a wonderful place on it's own, which it is, the view alone makes it worth it! I went here to do a Brazilian wax. My esthetician did a great job but the price was ridiculous. By the end of the session my bill was over $75 with tax. Now I'm from New York City, a very expensive city and I can get a Brazilian wax for $45-$50 using a special wax (chocolate, sugar). They weren't offering a special wax, just a hard wax for $75 plus dollars. I'm sorry but that's too rich for my blood. read more

My daughter and I visit every five weeks and receive excellent and friendly service. We feel like we know the people there, and Mr. Rivers is on-site most days that we have appointments. They always remember to call to confirm our appointments in case we've forgotten. On the rare occasion that our regular hairdresser has a scheduled vacation, we've received great service from the substitute, who receives notes from our usual hair cuter/dyer. I am very rarely motivated to post over over disappointing results, especially if the staff is even moderately well-meaning and makes an obvious effort, but I do feel more compelled to comment when I think poor service rises to the level of unprofessionalism. In this case, I basically came in for a trim and also hoping to clean up the remnants of a poor previous cut. When I sat down to consult with the hairstylist casually, I found her to be fairly defensive and officious, making it difficult to articulate any changes I was hoping for. I quickly saw that there was no point in pursuing the conversation, which was almost becoming combative. The haircut was fine--just not quite what I had had in mind--and left me thinking that I'd have to wait until the next round to get my hair really cleaned up. I have only been to this salon twice and would not choose to return, at least not to this particular hairstylist--mostly to avoid repeating the communication problems that I mentioned. read more

Best local salon and spa. Haircuts, facials and waxing folks are trained well and very friendly. The only thing I don't like is you have to have cash to tip your service providers - they won't let you put tips on credit cards. In most high-end salons, they allow credit or debit cards for everything. read more

I'm not sure about the other reviewers who said they've had a bad experience at Rob Rivers in Mystic. I've had nothing but positive & pleasant appointments there. Rob cuts my hair perfectly every time, and Sam does my color perfectly each time. The receptionists do a very good job & are efficient. The salon has enough parking, and the salon itself is gorgeous & very clean. I don't plan on going anywhere else to have my hair done - why would I? They do an outstanding job! I've been going to Rob Rivers for a few years now and until recently have never been disappointed. When I made my appointment I was very specific about the highlights I wanted and that they should consult Lisa, my hairdresser, as she did it before and would know it would be time consuming. Also, to allow time for a haircut after as well. When I got there I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she said she still had notes from last time. I assumed it would go well from there and I would be as happy as I was last time. I was wrong. Halfway through the highlighting she said there may not be time to do my haircut. I expressed my disappointment and asked if anything could be done. I was moved out of the chair to watch her do another customer still not knowing. Back in the chair another hairdresser came by and commented, "Only a few highlights, huh?" I thought that was very rude and told Lisa how specific I was when I made the appointment. She checked the computer and it was put in as standard highlights. After spending the whole time telling desk personnel, staff, and Lisa I wanted wide, bold highlights like last time, showing everyone the picture, I ended up with a faint set of thin regular highlights that could only be seen on the underside of my hair. She ended up doing the haircut and styling nothing at all like I asked for. No layers when she said she would put in layers etc. The color of the highlights and lowlights was not close either. I left stressed, upset, and confused. After looking at it at home realizing I couldn't even tell I had it done and having other people and hairdressers tell me for $250 I should get exactly what I wanted I returned and expressed my disappointment the next morning. They scheduled me in to "fix" it. What I left with was a few more thin highlights added to the top. This being the short story of it all, needless to say I will never return there again! read more

Many people will tell you not to try this salon. Listen. Don't let the pretty building and decor fool you. Their services are not worth the prices at all. It is overpriced, especially since most of the stylists are hardly talented or trained properly, and under serviced. Mediocre coloring and styling topped with poor customer service. Stylists constantly complain to clients about themselves, making the $85 color very unpleasant. To say there's room for improving customer service is an understatement. I used Rob Rivers Salon for my wedding. I went to the Old Lyme salon for my highlights before the wedding! The hair stylist was so friendly and did an amazing job. I had a hair and makeup trial before the wedding and the stylist did a great job matching my picture. The same stylist did my hair for the wedding. My bridesmaids and I were so satisfied with our hair and makeup! All the staff were friendly, professional, and easy to work with. I highly recommend Rob Rivers Salon!! read more

Wow. I'm a Mystic resident I went in this (expensive) place to get a gift certificate for my wife for Christmas. The attitude from the receptionist was outrageously snooty, verging on the RUDE. Anyhow - I bought it as I was running out of Christmas ideas. Sadly, my wife said she didn't want the gift because she had been there before (unbeknownst to me) and had found her manicure flaking off after about two days. I tried to return the gift certificate two days later but was told that their 'policy' was not to refund gift certificates. How customer unfriendly is that?? I won't be going back or recommending Rob Rivers to any of my female friends/relatives. Sad. read more

I WiLL NEVER GO BACK AND WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THIS SALON OR STYLIST TO ANYONE! I have had several cuts at this 'upscale' salon in the past but this time was the last. The stylist was more concerned with her child's soccor/baseball game late that afternoon, with a meeting at school that she forgot about that evening and with her friend that she was cutting after me than she was with me.....the client in front of her. She started out asking me what I wanted and then started doing the same old cut that I did not request. I asked her about it and then she got quiet and started cutting much faster. She requested (twice) that someone talk to her friend that was waiting and made me feel as if I was holding her up. I felt as though she had things to do and I was holding her up. I hated the cut right away, but since I have wavy hair, I thought I would see if my hair 'settled' in to the cut. It did not. I had to go back and get it re-cut and her remarks were that she really liked the cut. She never really heard that I HATED IT and this style was not what we had discussed. Also, I have never had a blow dry and style but am charged for this service every time--It seems as though she is always running late and I have to pay for her poor time management. Lastly, when I left I had hair all over my face, my blouse, my neck because she did not blow or brush the hair off me. Take my advice, and choose another salon--there are plenty in the area. The cut previous to this one also had to be re-cut and the receptionist told me that I had to pay for another cut, but the supervisor intervened and did not charge me.
