Played a couple kickball leagues here through VaviSport. The field is huge... Multiple games going on at once. One side is soccer the other flag football our side is kickball and the other is basketball. Our games are always after 6pm... The field has enough lighting for the night games and it's safe to walk to your car after the games. We used to play at the other location in OB across from the Vavi's main office. Robb field is bigger and better. The grass is well maintained. Other than the field, it's always fun to play kickball with friends. Win or lose we make the best of it followed by happy hour if we have the time :) read more

This is an unmanned park... no staff... I utilize if for BMX for my little dude.... There are some really rad BMX riders... catchin air like it ain't no thang... they all seem to be really cool.... Yes... there will be an occasional scent in the air.... maybe its freshly cut grass.....;) How can you go wrong... this park is along the water...... palm trees everywhere and cool breeze off the ocean... You can take a leak in the bathrooms nearby..... Benches on the outside of the fence... There are a lot of homeless people in the area, and folks getting crunk.... So if you can roll with that, you can probably roll here... Just leave your "mom jeans" at home ..... read more

Robb Field Skateboard Park is a great addition to the Robb Field Recreational area. Open from 10:00 a.m. to Dusk every day of the year, including holidays, it is a very popular and well-used site next to the San Diego River Bike Path. "With 40,000 square feet of concrete, this skate park has something for everyone, regardless of age or skill level. The "street course" design features a combination bowl, along with numerous handrails, ledges, blocks, a pump bump and an octagon volcano." There is a beginner's area -immediately next to the parking lot-with some low bowls and benches and seats for the over-protective mothers (such as myself) to sit on while they watch the kids. The younger kids can build up their skill levels and confidence before they make the big leap into the Skate Park where the real action is! The Robb Field Park is considered one of the "most awesome skateboard parks in Southern California." Robb Field is the first skateboard park constructed and operated by the City of San Diego, designed with input from top local skateboarders, such as Tony Hawk. The Robb Field Skate Park opened in February 2000, and at first charged membership and admission to use. But as the City of SD went financially-under; the employees who manned the pay booth were let go and the place now is wide open for anyone to use-with a few restrictions. What reduces the Skate Board Park down to 4 Stars from 5 Stars is the lack of upkeep the City of San Diego had foisted on this property. It is the crown jewel in San Diego Skate Parks, yet it has miserably deteriorated in upkeep. Now when I ride by on my bike-there are over-flowing trashcans, litter, grafitti, weeds galore. The many nice trees and plants are badly in need of pruning-or in some cases-are completely dead! I remember the very day this place opened-it was a really big deal for all the area kids and it's sad to see it looking now like a down-on-her-luck dowager! I have suggested to the Rock Church Beautification Ministry that they consider making this there next area of fixing up. Most of those skateboard -crazy kids don't give a hoot about the disreputable state of the park, but the parents who hang with their kids there probably do. So I will consider the 4 Stars to be a temporary evaluation and hope that the Robb Field Skate Park will see some LOVE soon and clean up nicely as a result! Went to the skatepark recently, I roller skate. The park was fun to pump in and skate around, however the concrete has not been until kept very well. It is very rough and bumpy. It's a little more difficult to maintain speed and stability due to the roughness but it was still fun. read more

***This review is strictly about the Fitness Center*** Welcome to OB, please slow down. I love this gym. It could be called "Average Joe's". $90 for 6 months. --That is why I love it the most. It only has a couple of everything. 2 treadmills, 2 elipticles, 4 stair climbers (which I have learned kick your ass quickly), free weights, and machines. There are 4 workout rooms and and outside area with some punching bags and free weights. I'm not sure what happens to that room when it rains, but I hope to find out. My friends play rugby there, and on occasion I ride my bike over to see what's going on. Fun park that's free and open at daylight. Crowd is a mix of young and old. Concrete is less than smooth in the bowls, but if you can roll in and know how to work a corner, you'll be fine. The street area is pretty tranny filled, but there are some rails and ledges. Mainly hips and bowls though. You may assume that a free, open at dawn skatepark is overrun by degenerates, but it's not. Most people that know how to skate or ride bikes there are respectful and courteous. It's when younger kids that don't quite know how to look where they're going are there that things can get out of hand. Not that kids shouldn't be allowed in the park, but you can easilly spot which kids were raised right and which weren't. The walk there is rife with homeless people, but I've never had an issue. Show up early before 8:30 if you want the park to yourself for an hour or so. read more

Excellent skate park for the littles at least! As a mom, I don't understand all the trash talk by other reviewers. I like that there aren't any big turns where I can't keep an eye on the kiddos like at Clairemont. There's nothing worse than hearing your kid go down and cry and not being able to see them. My 6 year old loves both the big bowls. I've seen dads and their sons who look like they just learned how to walk, practicing on boards and scooters here. Everyone from skaters to BMXers are very nice to the little kids. Both my kids like the beginner shallow "bowls"/skate areas near the parking lot that are somewhat shaded as well which is great in the summer. The park is very clean usually and restrooms are nearby and plentiful. Nice variety of ramps, pyramids and drop-ins for beginners IMHO. I can't comment on flow, but neither kid has complained about it. I really can't believe this place is free! read more

I live in OB currently (hopefully not for much longer) so this is the only real option for me unless I want to drive. Robb Field is not bad, not bad. IF you go on a weekday before noon. It's pretty much empty. You can hit tennis balls, use the gym, use the handball/racquetball/squash courts, use the playground, all the fields are totally open and available... the only people wandering by are bums and the occasional local who knows that early- and mid-morning weekdays are the time to come to this place. IF, however, you have a 9-5 job and can only come on the weekends, it's a nightmare. The place is packed with hoi polloi from morning to night on Saturday and Sunday. I mean packed. Especially in the summer when there are tons of "youth" camps like soccer and tennis and whatever. There's almost no point in going on weekends unless you particularly enjoy the sweaty miasma of BO and bad breath emanating from the masses of humanity that will surround you here. read more

The holes in the soccer fields are out of control. (I think they are from gophers.) They fill the holes with sand, so during soccer games we run into either mounds of sand or into holes filled with sand - either way, lots of ankle injuries occur purely because of all the holes. I have an idea - fill the holes with cut pieces of sod, stacked on top of each other. That way at least it is a solid surface to run on. I love playing at Robb because it is so close to my apartment, but I'm too old to be dealing with all the ankle injuries! Run on the grass with caution. read more

I have been to this field mainly to watch soccer games. bad bad bad referees. I lost my keys (or they got stolen) and no one wanted to help me! Other than that its a regular field. the rec center staff was really friendly and trieed to help me find my keys. The three stars go to the Rec staff. read more

I have visited ROBB Field so far for only playing softball and kickball through the Vavi organization (Awesome company with tons of adult organized sports!!! Check them out!!!). My review is mainly for "Field 7" which is the only field I ever see vavi and social leagues play on. I'll start by saying accessibility and parking is never a big deal on weeknights. I don't visit on weekends so I can't fully comment to that extent but, I never have a problem snagging a spot no matter it being summer or the off months. My leagues play after 6 pm so again, I am not here during the day. The one thing I can't stay is the small road that links the back fields to the park entrance and exit. This thing is dangerous and needs widening. A car coming and going can make it by each other but, it's extremely close. I often find myself waiting for cars to fully exit the path before driving my car down to the field. The field I play on, itself is really not all that awesome. The sand is harsh. I mean it's literally concrete with a hard packed sand on top of it. This makes the field an extremely fast one when it comes to softball. Unpredictable soft patches and hard spots leads to the ball bouncing and can catch someone in the face. I understand it's a state ran field / tax payer field and the budget is small but, the facility can definitely use other materials to keep the dirt turned and softer. Different clays and sands are available. Find them. The grass is pretty good. Some small patches here and there but for the most part, it's there and in tact. Overall, the facility is good for what it's purpose is. I just want a widened exit / enter path / back road and the dirt to get better treatment. read more

Basically if your not here to be shady and lurk around the trees with a bottle of King Cobra and some dated hunting binoculars you can: Play an over enthused ball related game with ex-roid ragers who still flip the fuck out if they miss a point or pass out drunk on a bench while the skatepark kids urinate on you. read more

This park was good when it first opened because there was nothing else nearby. Now there's a few spots around town and this one really doesn't compare. The concrete is like sand paper and it just doesn't have good flow to keep your speed. What should be done is this park should be dedicated to BMX and another section for skateboarding should be built properly next to it. That's my opinion anyway. read more

There are three beautiful ledges/Hubbard in the front of this park but there's no run up skateable for even beginners they are extremely mellow with clean coping. As for the rest of the park it's all tranny the park seems to always be packed with Scooter kids and bikers. There's also a little spot before you head In that looks like three empty Koi ponds so that kids can skate. It's just a big pump track. read more

This review is for the GYM. I've been going there for several months and really like the place. It's just a short walk or bike ride from the heart of OB, so it's nice to have a good local gym. It's kind of a guy's place, and at least for me, that makes it a good place to focus on the workout and not the girls... it's never too crowded and the staff is friendly. The outdoor space is a nice touch. Prices are VERY good for a gym. read more

My daughter is playing 5 games over 3 days at the "SHOWCASE BY THE SEA" Tournament, August 7 -9, 2015. Parking is horrible during a tournament. Allow yourself extra time, patience and a good attitude to find parking. We park, like many others on the sand, since there was not enough parking spaces to accomodate 8 simultaneous games and the cars of players, families, coaches and vendors. It's a mess and I've seen tempers flare on more than one occasion. The fields, like many in dought stricken California are dry, hard and poorly maintained. The fences are strange. On some fields the design just makes no sense...like they were designed by random people who know nothing about softball. The bathrooms are gross. Dark and damp but heck of a lot better than having to use a port-a-potty. There also seems to be a lot of transients in the area including a tree dweller. Tip: Bring your coolers, chairs and canopies. There is no shade here, the bleachers are horrible but there are no cooler restrictions. read more

I have been coming to this field on a weekly basis to play football for six years now - and while the games are fun - the bum shit is everywhere. Seriously, we are talking winnebago's lowering anchor for 14 hours at a clip and taking on the fields as their backyard bbq. Love me some drunk bum drama though, so my rating does go up a little for that. Thankfully they never seem to attack, that is the weed kicking in. The gym is decent, and has fees that even the guys in the winnie can afford - so another star for that. And finally - the third star comes from the guy who walks around looking for plastic bottles and ends up picking them up from the ground (bums are so green) so that they can get a little extra cash for some cold ones. The large, variable transition-based layout of this park makes skating fun and as challenging as you want it to be. Rough concrete on most of the walls means you better pump hard to keep speed. Oh, and don't fall. read more

After skating memorial, chino an wsvt I decided what the hell, and mobbed to this park. Its got bowls, flat bars an the usual kids lurking on their bikes an scooters. Its a cool park but they need to repave it an make it alot smoother. Add piping around the coping to make it flow better. Seems like they half assed the park an werent really thinking.on how to make it flow better. They have a stair set at the beggining of the park but nowhere to get speed to clear it. The pyramid is too steep an doesnt make sense to put a rail next to another rail on the same set. Come on san diego, sd used to be the place to.go to skate. A field for every sport. Skate park, gym, racquetball, playground, public restrooms, and several big grassy areas for everything else. It is right behind my house. We get together there all the time. The homeless people generally leave you alone. Just watch out for dog poop. Some people are so rude. read more

Okay.. this park is absolutely huge. By square feet it is probably the largest in San Diego County! It was designed by Andy Macdonald;the vert dog. And it is not hard to tell! 60-70% of this park is tranny, the rest is street. So if you can skate bowls, you will love it here! Street course is alright. The pyramid has good dimensions and the ledges are mellow and easy to skate. Try to keep your eyes off of the bums around the park pushing shopping carts, drinking Colt 45, and being sketchy! The worst thing about the park is the concrete. I don't know if they skimped in their budget, but it is the roughest park I've ever skated. There is no finish on it so reverts are tough. read more

Love coming out here for years now. Great to come and bring the kids on the weekends. They occasionally have tournaments such as flag football which we like to sit and enjoy to watch. Baseball on Sunday morning (does it get any better?) Traffic to get to the park can be annoying at times but other than that its a great place to come. read more

Super fun park, STREET SKATERS BEWARE. Heavy on the transition and bowls, and not a lot of street stuff to skate. This is the oldest park in San Diego, and so with that comes a few things. The ground is pretty rough but as long as you mash you can get around. Localism is big here so respect the park and the park will respect you. read more

I skate this place every so often only because the ground here is rough, almost like skating street which wears your board and wheels down quickly if you go here everyday. This skate park needs to be resurfaced if possible just to keep up on its maintenance. read more
