Unfortunately, when she discovered that I was black, she no longer wanted to move forward with me and instead scheduled an open house for the upcoming weekend to find new applicants. I met every qualification except the color of my skin. Unfortunately, I cannot change that. What Lana doesn't know is that I am a good person, a mother of a 5 year old, and a veteran elementary school teacher. She doesn't know that my current landlord would love for me to continue with him, but is willing to give a strong recommendation to my new landlord. She doesn't know that I am a former homeowner but recently divorced and need to rent temporarily. So what does Lana know? Lana knows that my NTN report is 95%, my credit score is excellent, I make over 2.5 times the amount of her listing, I have a clean background check, and I have $0 debt. Lana now knows that I am black. And since she made that discovery, she refuses to rent out her listing to someone who looks like me regardless of my qualifications. Racism is deeply rooted in our country so much so that even people who immigrate here have quickly learned who is at the bottom and treat them accordingly. My hope is that justice will be served. My hope is that Lana holds herself accountable for breaking the law. And if she has children, I hope they never have to experience a realtor like her when they are looking for housing.
