We thought that sounded a little high, so we had Kavie from Stable Foundations come out and take a second look. We would have willingly paid him up to $4000 for underpinning on our beam; but after he looked around in the crawl space and our flooring, he said we actually didn't even have a problem. He suggested we not do anything- keep in mind this consultation was free. So he came to our home, took time out of his day for free, and didn't cash in on what we would have paid because he decided to be honest with us. This company has an "A+" rating with the BBB and I can see why. You can tell Kavie knew exactly what he was talking about, he was experienced and he's not there to rip you off.
