My wife and I walked around looking at all the beautiful plants and trees for several hours. They also have a few water falls as well. They have paved walkways and you can bring your dogs along for the walk. They do have trails you can venture off through the plants and trees that leads back to the paved paths. We loved it! On the grounds they have tennis courts, basketball courts and a nice playground for kids. If you are ever in the area you MUST stop by this park! We definitely recommend it!

I saw this Arboretum trending on Instagram and I knew I had to check it out. I have to say I can't…read morebelieve I have never heard of it before because it was incredible! There were a ton of people also there so parking can be a little difficult but at least the parking is free. The park has a playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, and then right behind it all is the Arboretum. The arboretum is a fantastic walking trail. It has several hundreds of different species all throughout and it has signage naming each one so you get to learn a bunch while you are walking around. The pathway is paved and includes many branching walkways to benches, picnic tables, and places to see even more so you aren't on a linear walk. They also have a bunch of alligator signs so you may be lucky enough to spot one when walking around. I could easily spend an hour walking around counting the species of plants and seeing which one is thriving the most throughout the exhibit. I can't wait to visit again and see more than what I saw on my first visit.

The Deerfield Beach Historical Society is the main historical organization for the city of…read moreDeerfield Beach. They operate so many events its amazing that they are just an all volunteer organization. The key property is the 1923 historic house, The Butler House, which offers tours on Saturdays and by appointment only. The Butler House is next to an over 100-year old Banyan tree, which is a great location for weddings and events. The other facility they operate is the Cultural Center & Museum, which is across the street. The Cultural Center is a resource center available for all organizations in Deerfield Beach. The Center provides art exhibits, concerts, art classes, movie nights, historical lectures and community events. A third facility they operate is the Old Schoolhouse, which opens by appointment only as well as on Saturdays for different organizations. One side of the Schoolhouse replicates as a 1920s schoolhouse and the other is used as a meeting space. The Society also maintains an archive and is available for research by appointment. The Society is a great city resource and tries to save the historical buildings in the area.

The historic home was the residence of James D. and Alice Butler. They married in 1906 in Texas and came to visit a relative in Florida in 1910 and ended up staying. James had made money by owning a small grocery store. Later when he moved to Deerfield Beach he farmed green beans. The house was built in a Mediterranean Revival style according to plans Alice won in a Ladies Home Journal contest. The 2 story house cost $10,000 to build. The only change Alice made to the plans was that they she didn't want the step down into the dining room that was common in houses of that period because she didn't want the children she was planning for to trip and fall. Sadly due to a medical condition Alice was never able to bear children. Instead she and James looked after the children of the community and were very active in causes for them. James was a member of the first Broward School Board in 1915. There is still a scholarship in their name that is given to this day to every student who graduates from Deerfield Beach High School. Alice formed the first women's club and James served as a Broward County Commissioner. They were both active in their church. The furniture in the house is almost entirely original except for the dining room table that was broken and replaced when it was used to cover up a window during the 1928 Hurricane. In 1974 the houses was designated a historic site. The Butler's left the house to the Deerfield beach Historical Society in 1977. They operate a small gift shop in the back of the house. Besides the house the property also has a Kester Cottage which was economical housing in the early 1920's. It looks like it was being used for storage. Another nice feature of the property is the 100 year old banyan tree. My tour was conducted by a young volunteer. She did an amazing job and I learned a lot about people I had previously heard of but did not know that much about. More dates for tours can be found on the historical society's website.

Today I finally took the time to walk inside a gallery I have been acquainted with in terms of…read moretheir outdoor sculptures for a very long time but somehow or another never quite made it inside. Probably because being a true Yelper I was more focused on the nearby restaurants, of which there are many good choices. What a lovely experience it was to break my pattern and discover this hidden in plain site gem of a gallery. I was mostly aware of this gallery because of the large beautifully rendered sculpture of "A Fiddler on the Roof" that I discovered outside the gallery many years ago. I frequent a French restaurant across the street from here and have admired the sculpture for many years now. I vaguely remember trying to go to the gallery previously but it was closed at the time. Today I got to meet the sculptor, Yaacov Heller, and see more of his other works of art which range from sculpture to paintings, and jewelry. It was a true treat and I treated myself to a uniquely designed Star of David that is artistically merged with the word love and elegantly hung from a curly choker in sterling silver. I have to admit that I was rather shocked to find that I could afford it. A very pleasant surprise indeed. I was also stunned that the artist took the time to talk to us himself despite having a store clerk present, especially since he originally told us after coming out to greet us personally that he would be working in the back of the store. He gave us a tour of his store after we walked around and examined his vast collection of art by ourselves. He also talked to us about a documentary that was made about him and told us it would be airing very soon on Facebook, etc., and asked us if we would be interested in receiving an invitation. We are. He even played us a part of the documentary on a large screen in his store that told the story behind a particularly extraordinary sculpture of his that was of the hand of a surgeon holding an anatomically correct heart that the surgeon himself supplied input on. There is a very real and personal connection to Yaacov Heller and the story behind the piece itself. In addition, he called our attention to a nearby park and memorial outside his store and asked us if we had seen it. He had a photograph of it inside his store near his bust of Benjamin Ferencz, the Nuremberg prosecutor, the original bust is now in the International Criminal Court in The Hague. We were not aware of the park and after leaving his delightful gallery we went to check it out. The park is called, "The Garden of Humanity" and is a memorial designed by Yaacov Helier as a memorial to the 6 genocides of the 20th century. There is a large sculpture made by Yaacov Heller in the center of "The Garden of Humanity." The garden also has 14 hand carved stone benches that have relevant quotes that have inspired and continue to inspire Yaacov Helier. A short film was made about Yaacov Helier and Ben Ferencz and the making of the bust of Ben Ferencz. It is entitled, "Two Heads are Better than One: Making of the Ben Ferencz Bust. It is accessible via Vimeo. Last but not least, Gallery 22 has two dogs inside it which were a true delight to us dog lovers. They were friendly, entertaining and added to our enjoyment of our experience here. There is something here for everyone and it is well worth the visit and checking out. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
