The shop is extremely clean. It's not a mess like some of the other shops in town, where they have holes in furniture and magazines and papers everywhere. Also, you don't have to worry about the language of the barbers and clients around children. I love that you can book an appointment online. After talking with her, she explained the different treatments she offers, I went ahead and booked an appointment for microplaning with her before hanging up. I love the name, a play on "steel" scissors (hair cuts) and steam (facial services). My facial was very relaxing. It was nice to chat with Aubrey as she worked. She does the microplaning first - the skin is dry, so the razor gets more of the dead skin as opposed to wetting the skin. My appointment lasted an hour and a half. I felt I definitely got my money's worth ($70).

After explaining I wouldn't of made an appointment on a day that I have practice he agreed to fit me in before leaving Saturday to go home. I show up 10 minutes early just in case he was waiting on me, just so I could watch him lock up his shop and leave. Legit tried to ditch out 10 minutes before my appointment...that he set. Never felt more disrespected as a customer. Especially since I had yearbook pictures for our ball team on Monday and was not able to get my haircut before pictures. Horrible, horrible, horrible service. If I could have given them zero stars I would have.

Scott was quick but extremely efficient and attentive. My son was immediately at ease as was I within just the greeting. The haircut was spot on even though we weren't exactly sure how to explain what my son wanted. Instead of handling the situation professionally, the barber immediately became defensive, argumentative, and dismissive. Rather than listening or trying to understand the issue, he flat-out denied any problem and insisted that my hair was "thinning," which was both inaccurate and unnecessary. (All I did up to this point was mention what he did) I explained that I am very familiar with my own hair and would know if my hair was thinning, I want to also mention that I'm 21, but the conversation continued to be met with resistance and attitude instead of any willingness to resolve the concern. He then insults me saying "your hair is thinning everywhere". At no point did I raise my voice or act disrespectfully--I simply expected a reasonable, professional response. The interaction ended with me being waved off without any attempt to acknowledge the issue or offer any form of resolution. I'm not sure if it was because I'm Hispanic or if he's just a very upset human being. Other than that, the haircut still sucked, the lines weren't straight, you can still see the lines in my hair that he didn't fade out correctly, he also cut too much off the top.

Throughout the years, Backstreet Hair Cutters has flourished with clientel and has gained a trustworthy name for itself! This is Newark, this isn't a high end New York City Salon. Lots of my friends go here to get their hair cut and have gone for years. What you'll find is a friendly couple of barbers (and I think a lady that does nails....or did at one time).
