This is a great grocery store to pick up a lot of food for parties. I always come here and get a great bang for my buck. They have tons of hot food options, and my go-to is usually rotisserie chicken or chicken nuggets. They also have tasty deli meats and cheeses for charcuterie boards that you can get for an affordable price. Fed 10 people for under $50. This is just about the service. Usually it is very good but today when checking out the cashier Carol was talking the 'entire' time with the woman bagging. Obviously talking in between is fine but not while you're working with a client. At the end I had needed her help putting in my phone number. I asked if she could please reset it or help me. She said she couldn't do that. So I asked her to please take the avocados out as I only wanted them through the coupon on the store's app. Her reply was ' if you would stop talking and listen to me I told you I would do it'. Overall, a decent grocery store! The store itself is typically very clean, organized, efficient, well stocked and well staffed! I can always get in and out very quickly while getting what I need, and there's tons of parking. (My one big complaint is that a lot of the produce goes bad shockingly quickly, and is quite overpriced ) However, my main problem is with the coffee bar.... I would literally love to give it 0 stars, I think it was the worst iced coffee I've ever had in my life. Horrible. The prices are often more than Home Foods. When I buy produce, about 25% of it is below the quality of Trader Joe's or Star Market (basil, baby carrots strawberries that molded in 2 days). And SAVE your receipt until you use the product. No receipt--no refund, even if they can look it up on your credit card. I pity the staff that have to work here. On 6/24/23 I had a catered ordered delivered to my church. The order was roughly close to $700.00. Some of the items I ordered came as expected. The waffles on the other hand were burned and the bacon was partially cooked there were 4 trays ordered of each. I reached out to the manager who was out on Monday and Tuesday. I spoke with her on Wednesday she then spoke with her manager who called me back offering me a $50.00 gift card with an apology. The kicker for me was that she didn't ask what she could do for me she just threw out the gift card and said I could pick it up or use on a future order. I called back and told her this was unacceptable. My church orders from them often and I had placed my order from there this second time because the first order I made was a hit with the members. What made us realize things was when no one wanted anything. I saw the waffles finally and how charred they were and the back barely cooked and was appalled. Said supervisor said if you have pictures I will see what I can do. It has been two weeks and I have not heard from her since I text the pictures. With that being said I won't be ordering again. This store is a true gem. Great service and everything is fresh, they even stock the shelves while your shopping. Most of the customers are friendly, it not surprising to see people in the aisles showing pictures of their grandkids to each other. The deli is great and they repackaged all the Boors Head produce with Roche Bros. labels so you needn't worry about salmonella! They usually have two people working the deli one slicing orders and the other with his thumb in his rectum. The self checkout is amazing with long lines at the cashiers you can self checkout in a half hour providing there are no glitches which are highly probable. One troublesome point.You most likely will encounter a political activist or solicitor outside at the entrance. I usually ignore them, after all I went there to shop not to engage in politics , contribute to preselected charity or sponsor an unknown fund! read more

Well after shopping at this store for more than 20 years I will never go there again! The fruit was moldy, flea infested and rotten! The manager did not want to believe my issue! The Hot Food Bar at Roche Brothers - West Roxbury, is a compendium of low/inferior quality, bad "Truck Stop type," commercial grade hot food offerings. I remember seeing/reluctantly eating similar quality (NO QUALITY), inferior food at a truck stop in Butte, Montana, many years ago (a case of "any port in the storm"), and the offerings on the Roche Brothers Hot Food Bar reminded me of the food at that Truck Stop in Butte, Montana. In fact, the food at the Truck Stop in Butte, Montana was much better. I am shocked that Roche Brothers would serve food of this quality to its customers and staff. Actually, there is no quality in the food, the food is SUB-commercial grade. What an embaressment to Roche Brothers; evidence that Roche Brothers really does not care about their food, stature, or customers. The food on Wegman's Hot Food Bar puts the food on the Roche Brothers Hot Food Bar to shame. Roche Brothers doesn't really need any introduction but in West Roxbury, the supermarket is pretty impressive and fairly large. Has a variety of artisan cheeses and Breads and regular Supermarket stuff that you can get anywhere. Seafood and meats are decently graded and at times they have some really good deals on meat products. However I don't really see the seriously high-end stuff that you would get in in Whole Foods like filet mignon. I just haven't really seen any in the supermarket. There is a good variety of lamb. Lots of different cuts. Prices are generally decent but one of the good things about the store if they have specials if you buy 5 packs of meat you can get it all each for $5 which is a big savings if one of the packs is $8 and the other is priced at $6. I often come here and the people are generally personable and I had no real problems. There was only one incident where I had to return some shrimp but customer service was very understandable and gave me a refund. I also like going to the dairy section to get my frozen yogurt because sometimes if you check, you can get a pretty decent deal for frozen yogurt in a tub regardless of the brand. Like $2.99... Not bad. What's good about the supermarket is that there's a lot of parking available and people come and go fairly quickly if it looks pretty busy around the holidays like Thanksgiving. After getting a couple of great recommendations for the Passover catering, I decided to give it a try this year instead of cooking. I was told the stuffed chicken breast was great, so I purchased that entree. When I picked it up it looked tasty, and was already cooked, so I reheated it according to the directions (350 degrees for 15-20 minutes). Upon taking the first bite, it was so bone dry that none of my guests could eat it; all of our portions were inedible and ended up in the trash (however, the carrots were tasty). I imagine the chicken was overcooked to begin with, because it had absolutely no moisture left at all, and I had to reheat and serve what food I had in the fridge for my Passover Seder. I immediately provided my feedback to the email survey sent by Roche Bros, as well as personally to the caterer herself, Maria....and didn't even receive the courtesy of a response. I would highly advise AGAINST the Passover entrees and will not be reordering myself. read more

We recently came here on a beautiful Sunday eve, around 7:30pm. We couldn't stay and snack and chat and drink our coffees at the nearby Starbucks, as they were closing up shop there, so we figured we come in here to this grocery store to get some of their famous pastries and we'd sit and snack and chat in their seating/"dining" area by the front entrance in the store. Surprise! When we entered the store, all the lights in the seating/dining area were off and the chairs were all stacked on the tables. The area was closed. What? Was there no place in town for my kids and I to have lattes and snacks or pastries with my aunt? It was still so early, and light and bright and hot outside. We were surprised, to say the least. Places sure close up shop early in this neck of the woods! So we decided to get pastries nevertheless and go back to my aunt's house to snack and chat. We wandered through the ready-made foods area. Wow, very impressive. And very gourmet. Beautiful bakery area. And the display cases of pastries did not disappoint! Just gorgeous, and freshly made, beautifully decorated tarts and tartlets and cakes and pastries and petit fours. Lovely. And quite the large selection, too. We didn't explore the rest of the store, but we were quite impressed by the whole pastry department. Just disappointed in the unavailability of the sit-in eating area. read more

It's ok. I'll leave it at that, wait, I'm incapable of leaving it at that. I've been several times and found the same experience both times. Nice variety of fruit and veggies, milks, IPAs and wine. Prices are too high for me, aisles are too small, and it's difficult to literally get through the store. Checkout takes a while, and the parking lot situation is on the border between headache and migraine. Finding a spot is too hard, and returning a cart is too hard. I'd be willing to put up with these if the prices were better, but they're not. It's nice that they offer carry out for groceries, I wish they would consider more aspects of the shopping journey, they don't make it easy for you to give them your money but are willing to dispense with the niceties once you've paid. This is an amazing Roche Brothers. Really. Probably the largest I've been to yet and definitely offers SO much great stuff. Good enough parking lot for a city store, yet not like stores in the suburbs and it may be difficult to find a spot during weekends or other busy times. The aisles are wide and super easy to move throughout, even with lots of people around and lots of carts, which is a nice change from some other places (specifically CVS). Everything is organized and the store is superior in cleanliness, and is immaculate. Checkout didn't take long and many checkouts were open, even at 7:30pm. My cashier was friendly as well (Jaspir was her name I think), and made the transaction move quickly and effectively. Great store. Really bad experience here this morning which means we are unlikely to return. Stopped in intending to buy some fish. The guy at the fish counter first yelled "Can't hear ya!" from the other end of the counter when I asked him what the whole fish were. Then asked him to come to that side, which he did. Told me what the fish were. When I asked the prices, he turned away and started slamming various things down on the countertop and ignored me. At which point we told him that he was clearly having a bad day, and left. Awful behavior (& btw, it's not like it was busy, it was 8am and there was nobody else at the counter). This review is for their delivery service (I haven't been to the store). It's similar to Stop n Shop's Peapod model that lets you shop online and choose a delivery time window, but there are a few reasons I choose it over Peapod: 1. The quality of meat and fish at Roche Bros is far better than that of Stop n Shop. 2. They allow you to specify the weight of your meats and produce to the quarter pound and supply a field with each item for you to write a note, like how you want your meat cut. 3. You can get same day delivery - as soon as four hours - while the fastest you can get Peapod is next day. However, Roche Bros offers fewer time windows. 4. The delivery charge is $9.95, same as Peapod, but the key here is that Roche Bros has a no tipping policy, while Peapod expects you to tip. 5. Supporting a community grocer over a nationwide chain. They give you a free apple pie with first delivery, which is cute, but unfortunately the pie was inedibly saccharine. Don't buy their baked goods, I guess. read more

Dear god... I get so stressed out going to this supermarket. I only go because it's so close and convenient, but shopping here is a frustrating experience. I second demolishing this place and building a Market Basket. I really do try to avoid this place at all costs. I don't find their price "deals" all that good. I really don't save that much shopping at this store. Once in a great while they'll have a good deal, but it's rare. I've never seen carts like the ones they have here. Why can't they provide regular sized shopping carts? The smaller ones are actually really nice, but I think they only have about 5 of those in the whole store and people will fight to the death for them, so it's always a crapshoot getting one of those. The flow of the store is all over the map. Every corner of this store ends in a sharp point which always creates a massive backup. The store is always crowded and you cannot navigate your shopping cart easily. The aisles are so narrow. People love to stop and "catch up" with one another all over the store and it makes for getting around that much more difficult. Pull over so people can pass by! Don't even think about getting some yogurt! You'll never make it out of that cluster f*** that congregates down there. The store employees think that restocking the shelves is a good idea while there are TONS of people in the store, so you'll have to take navigating around them too into consideration when shopping here. Why don't they think to restock during low peak times? And the parking! Let's not forget about the parking! Awful! There are never any available spaces and it is so narrow. An unfortunate accident is in the distant future for them in their lot. I find the Star Market in Chestnut Hill to be a much more pleasurable experience. I like this Roche Bros every time until I get to the check out or until I encounter one of the foreign idiots they hired to work there. Which is everyone. The produce is decent and prices are good but every single time I get to the check out and they ask what bag I want I say "Perishables in plastic". Now, this is my regular store because its so close, and only once have I been there and had someone know wtf a perishable is. Then, even when I explain it "anything that can go bad if you don't put it in the fridge" they still get it wrong - I find icecream and spinach in a paper bag mixed with a package of pasta and a plastic bag with chips, crackers, and six yogurts. Not to mention, everything is CRUSHED beyond belief. Its not that hard. Anyway, out to the car I go. Unload my groceries only to realize there is no freaking cart return. Why is that? Oh yes, its because the idiots who work there are supposed to walk your groceries out to your car for you. But how awkward is that??! And no thanks, I'm a big girl, I can unload my own groceries. Don't even bother asking someone where something is because they are probably from Ukraine and won't know what you are talking about or put in any effort to figure it out. In fact, they will likely avoid eye contact with you. I once met one very nice young gentleman, definitely no more than 14, definitely high as shit, but polite and smart. If this place wasn't so darned close to my house, I wouldn't come here. The prices on all produce are on par with Whole Foods, conventionally grown or organic, and the selection is just as vast, but it's different, and missing a lot of key veggies for me (endives and cheap arugola). Russo's is cheaper, and whenever applicable, fresher, has a better bakery, better prepared foods, cheaper prices on the same cheeses (though roche bro's cheese prices are usually a little lower than WF's), AND you can try the cheeses there. The ones at roche bro's seems like they're put in a standard supermarket display, even if the selection is much better than any stop and shop. Roche Bro's is kind of a strange middle ground between specialty/gourmet/health freak oriented market, and a plain ol' stop and shop. While it has a little more stuff than stop and shop, you're forced to pay WF prices, but without the kind of selection they have. Of course, the regular supermarket selection of non-perishable goods, like hostess cupcakes or whatever, are pretty much the same price as regular supermarkets, plus or minus a few cents depending on the product in question. read more

Me likey! It's too bad that the few negative reviews here seem to be based on a one-off bad experience or a problem that has to do more with personal preference than delivery of quality products or services. That being said, I happen to LOVE the place! Like someone said, it is like a cross between a Stop & Shop or Shaws (big chain store) and Whole Foods or Trader Joes (smaller, more specialty). You are offered your standard grocery fare with a decent enough selection to satisfy most. Prices may be a tad high but aren't enough to scare me away. I personally care more about a pleasant shopping experience than saving 15¢ on my avocado. There is a butcher counter, an "entertainment planning" center (so cute!) and a little florist, shop too! For me, being a borderline city-dweller (Roslindale) and having dealt with true city grocers for 10+ years (Fenway, JP, then NYC for a bit) this place is an absolute gem! It is large, clean, well-stocked and aesthetically pleasing. I love the unique look and layout of the place. It just feels right. It has a small-town feel, with big-store selection. There is a plenty generous parking lot (not sure why the complaints about parking). What I do find rather odd and different (but not necessarily bad) is: 1. Their shopping carts are high up and small. 2. They wheel your groceries out to your car for you. Maybe that's why all the aforementioned elderly folk frequent the place... I like the place so much, that I will now be traveling from my home in Roslindale to shop here. This matters because (1) I could throw a rock from my front porch and hit the ghetto Stop & Shop that is 3 minutes waking away and (2) I also pass a Village Market on the way to this Roche Bros. A West Roxbury institution, Roche Brothers has the unenviable task of competing with a number of other supermarkets in the area, as well as with higher-end grocers and specialty retailers. Yet it consistently beats its rivals in price, service, and quality and does so while remaining independently run and focused on a small geographical area. How it manages to pull off such a feat is at worst impressive and at best miraculous. I've shopped at each store in the chain at least twice and to review it I selected the location with which I'm the most familiar - the one in West Roxbury. Located just off of Center Street, it offers a huge deli with a number of specialty smoked meats and cheeses from overseas. If one wants a better deli in the area, he or she would have to visit Harvard Avenue in Brookline. Roche Brothers has also created probably the best in-store prepared food section of any supermarket chain in the area, and the West Roxbury store's operation is the best in the chain. Its only drawback is the line that forms around lunchtime and dinner. The sheer variety of its offerings has to be seen to be believed. The bakery section is comparable in variety and price to other supermarkets in the area and is noteworthy for its seasonal selections. Rather underrated is the produce department. As a former produce department worker in another store I looked down on Roche's selection...but since this location has been opened the variety has increased tremendously. The best part of the store, though, is its meat department. Roche Brothers has always been known for a strong meat section and that has only improved with time. For freshness and overall quality the department rivals or, in some cases, outdistances higher-end grocers or specialty butchers, and does so at a reasonable price. Even lower cuts of meat, such as flank steaks or London Broil are of restaurant quality. Rather underrated is the store's fish department. A tip: Scallops and haddock are two of the better offerings among a host of good ones. Get 'em. Both the paper goods and health and beauty sections are very good, but not great, simply because of their limited selection. There is no wine or beer section, but that's expected in Massachusetts. Most who shop at Roche's, though, are more interested in food than anything else. Service is moderately fast and very courteous...employees will help bring your groceries to the car if you'd like. Notice also the presence of managers on the floor. This is a store where management is serious about the details and that's reassuring. When freshness and quality matter, Roche Brothers wins every time. I've heard some of my West Roxbury friends refer to it as the 'Cathedral of Food.' I shop here because it's 2 blocks from my house, that and the produce are the only reasons. But if you go in there before 8pm, it's not going to be pleasant. Their isles are so small and there are so many people, I would never ever ever use a cart. Hand basket's only, it's the only way to navigate because people are ridiculously rude and it wouldn't work out for me to use a cart. The produce is the best around and so are the meats, they have nice selections of stuff you won't see at Shaws or Stop n Shop. But let's talk about their kitchen and the pre packaged food that they sell cold. Aside from the sub sandwiches and salads, it is GARBAGE! I tried their in-house prepared chinese food, calzone ($16) and random dinners and I felt extremely ripped off. If you pay whole foods prices for that stuff, it should be good after you reheat it. It was absolutely dreadful. Their fried chicken and wings are gross. When I was still living in JP, I was skeptical of Roche Bros. It was a grocery chain I was not familiar with, being not a native Bostonian. My guy likes small grocery stores and generally does not pay attention to price, so I figured this place had limited selection with hefty price tags. But I've found that the selection is pretty great and I've noticed a lot more sales, either in person, in the weekly circular, especially coupons. It is great to find a store with good, fresh produce. They also have a great selection of meat, with lots of good cuts. I've only used their seafood counter once, but everything looks great. I'm not really a prepared foods type person, but they have a lot of choices between pizzas, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, chocolate mousse and more. I also like their bakery for the occasional muffin, bagel, or Portuguese sweet muffin. And they have my chobani in stock pretty much always. I don't understand how they afford to have so many people working, but I guess they get by somehow. The weekends are super busy in the store and in the parking lot, so try to find a non busy time to get your groce shop on. read more
