I frequent here occassionally and the customer service is not bad and they have a good variety of groceries and they care about their produce. The supermarkrt is clean. Occassionally they will have a good sale. The main reason for my review is their bakery. I had a really good experience. I ordered a birthday cake there. The baker helped me in deciding the best size options as I wanted a two tiered cake that was in my theme colors (orange and pink)and style for my birthday. I was able to show them a picture and she was able to create it. There are limited fillings like lemon or strawberry preserves that i didn't like so I just chose a vanilla and chocolate layers combo w/whipped cream frosting. It came out beautiful. Everyone loved the cake and taste. I do wish they had fresh strawberry fillings but they don't. But regardless it came out awesome. read more

The new security bars at Shaws/Star Market in West Roxbury are ridiculous no more grabbing a prescription an leaving store you have to go all the way up to cashiers area to get out and never mind about customer service, same thing you need to go thru cashiers first and then there is no way to get back into store to go shopping. God forbid if there was a fire, or roof collapse etc. people will die trying to get out. the new set up is dangerous for elderly and handicap and others , way to much walking. I have NEVER seen a store so CONSISTENTLY out of shopping carts. in the last few months I've gone to Star to shop but left without going in at least a dozen times after looking EVERYWHERE for a cart. Be VERY careful when you check out because their prices are frequently wrong and their "deals" don't always take the advertised amount off. This happens almost every time I shop and it feels purposeful. The cashiers are distracted with their phones and talking with co-workers. They rarely have more than one cashier and there is always a long line. When using self checkout you need to look up price on items not tagged no help from any one.Just left my cart with deli items and frozen items for them to put back. Don't understand why people are hating on Stahh Mahhket. It's a clean, bright grocery store. During the pandemic they have been at least in my opinion doing a great job of sanitizing and enforcing social distancing. This store is so conveniently located, but it needs to get its game on. The produce is poor, limp broccoli and molded cauliflower are staples and they should really be removed. So should the badly dented vegetable cans. The same goes for the refrigerated meats; I like the prepackaged lunch meats, but after too many times opening them and finding them slimy with a green or rainbow sheen, I've learned to check the expiration dates EVERY TIME. Star, you were up to your old tricks last night when I went to buy imitation crab and lobster in the zip-lock packets--they were all ONE MONTH past their expiration date. You're going to poison someone, and the lawsuit won't be pretty. The new layout is confusing, although I like the new bulk foods section. This store is just ok. Many of the basic items bread milk eggs often out of stock. Prices high with gimmicks "" MUST buy all 5 " to get the discounted price , counter service fish / deli very nice , attentive. Cashiers are hit or Miss , some of the younger ones , on their phones , oblivious to what they are suppose to be doing. It's an ongoing complaint , or they are having full blown sidebar conversations with their coworkers. while supposedly helping you. I had a horrible experience here last night. I just went in to pick up a few things that were on sale. When I went to go pay. I started loading my purchases on the belt. I said "hello!" to the cashier and I got no response. I chalked it up to him not hearing me. I was loading the belt and he was doing something on the register. Once I was done. I walked up to him and asked "how are you guys doing tonight?". He looked at me, gave no response and continued to ring up what I was purchasing. He didn't say anything until just stating the total. When I put my card into pay then he started talking to a fellow cashier. I just took my bags and left. I did not ever get a thank you or have a good night. No common courtesy at all!!! After another extensive renovation of this place (quite confused.... another renovation was completed about a year ago for this store and everything got changed once again), I can say they continue to improve, which is highly appreciated. Out of all the local grocery chains, I tend to do the majority of my shopping at Stop&Shop, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, visiting Shaw's and Star Market the least. Every time I come into one of these stores I realize the benefits of the Shaw's and Star company though, they have fantastic butcher's and an overwhelmingly great bakery. Meats are above average as well. However, it's just not my "norm" and never will be. I am in love with the do-it-yourself scanners and self checkout provided at Stop&Shop and from a couponing standpoint (I am an "extreme couponer"), there are far more incredible deals at Stop&Shop. While I don't live in West Roxbury, I can understand why anyone would prefer shopping here in comparison to the Dedham Stop&Shop though. SO much less congestion and people just everywhere, which is something I always like about this store. Staff are friendly and efficient. As aforementioned, there is no self checkout though so when the lines get long (and they do) there is nothin else to do but wait. Throughout the most recent renovation, a Starbucks Coffee was added inside along with a large cafe sitting area. A new Pharmacy was also built on side of the store to alleviate the giant block the pharmacy used to take up in the center of the store (that took up way too much space, so good move on that!). Only issue (especially in the produce, deli area) is that items frequently do not ring up at what they are posted on the shelf for. Make sure to mention a discrepancy and watch the checkout screen (you are supposed to get the item free if it rings up wrong). Several of the price scanners do not work and are not up to state law requirements either. Sort of shows they don't put energies into keeping prices the most accurate that they could (sort of disappointing). Overall though, another well renovation for this place and a decent place to grocery shop on the cheap in West Roxbury. Sure, I'd get some stuff at Stop&Shop or Roche (both a hop, skip and jump away), but if I lived in West Roxbury I'd probably do the majority of my shoppings here since it's a nice store and seems to have the variety I want at low enough prices (now to add coupons on top of that.....). 4 stars. This store has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. First, I am 80 years old and don't usually write comments. I did an online order, and after I got home from the pickup I noticed 1/2 the order was missing. Went back to star and got the rest. The following day I noticed the 90% hamburger was already brown and smelled bad. I also saw that the price was marked 50% off but I only got $.50 of a $9 package. When I opened the salmon from the same order to cook instead of the hamburger, it smelled bad also. So I took it back to the store and (expecting better service) asked for the manager. (Took him a while to show up and had to be paged twice). His first response was "show me the receipt" which was rude and not appropriate considering the circumstances. I asked if the store could help with my 3 trips to the store and he very bruskly responded "no". So I asked him to replace the hamburger and salmon with equivalent quantities which he did, but reluctantly and with attitude. When I went to cook the replacement, I found both the salmon an the hamburger had a slight smell and threw all of it out. I didn't return it because I didn't expect good service and I will not go to Star Market again. read more

I come here all the time and sick of the bad treatment lately. The cashiers just sit and watch you bag most of the time when you bring your own bags. Going to stop shopping here... so frustrating with the "must buy 5" or "must buy 10" deals. I don't need 5 or 10. I need 1 or 2 at consistent prices. I have no room for 5 or 10. My freezer is small. Fine if you have a big family and lots of storage space but not for others who don't. And sneaky price increases like frozen dinners usually on sale 5 for $10. Now today "On Sale 3 for $9". That is not a sale - it's another price increase. And who needs 5 containers of Breyers ice cream? One is a nice treat but if you buy 5 the sale price kicks in. No room for 5. I called this afternoon to confirm the store had lobsters in the tank. My toddlers birthday is today and she has been asking for lobster which we told her she could pick one out for her birthday. We get to the lobster tank, she picks out the lobster she wants then we wait and wait and wait. The guy at the seafood department couldn't get the new scale to work and therefore couldn't sell anyone seafood. I asked to speak to a manager to see if we could get the lobsters weighed on a different scale or even write a ticket $20 a lobster, I didn't care at that point. Nope... They would not go out of their way to assist the customer. Meanwhile, my toddler is asking why they won't give her the lobster she wants. I go to the cash register to pay for the birthday cake etc. The register crashes and we have to move everything to another register to pay. Terrible customer service. I feel more could have been done to assist us with coming up with a price so we could have left the store with lobster. read more

Old Star, then Shaws, and now Star again has been improving its selections with organic meat, veg, and diary. It would be nice if they expanded the diary to include Organic Valley. But overall not bad and looking forward to further improvements. If you use Apple Pay, I do, then note if spending over $50, you will need to use your iPhone not Apple Watch and use the device number. You can find this under settings/Wallet Applepay/credit card being used/scroll to bottom. This substitutes for giving the store your credit card. Much more secure. read more

Open until 11pm???? WRONG! You should really disclose that your deli closes whenever the guy working there feels like it. Shitty customer service! Terrible! Stand at the deli counter waiting at 9:20pm while 1 employee is cleaning the slicer. After being ignored for 5 minutes I say "excuse me, are you closed?" He said no but continued cleaning the slicer. 5 minutes later with attitude he comes to me I ask for cheese response: "nah I'm not slicing cheese the slicer is already cleaned." I live only a few blocks from the Star Market, so it is very convenient for me. On numerous occasions I've talked to the store manager about the quality of the fruit and vegetables. The problem being that they constantly keep rotted fruit and vegetables on display. When I pointed it out to the manager, he stated that they were perfectly fine. I spoke to him yesterday about the same problem and his answer was he would have to bring it up to his superiors. I asked him if in the past he brought it up to his superiors and he said yes. So now I just assume the quality here will always be horrible, and I told him I would no longer be shopping here. His response was have a nice day. This is the problem today there is no one who cares about customer service. I have also complained about lack of cashiers, but needless to say to no avail. So if you want horrible produce and don't mind standing in line to pay, then this is the sore for you. read more

Star Market in West Roxbury had made an excellent management change. Most of the managers before never said hi or asked if you needed anything especially the night time managers. This new management team is so awesome and helpful. They say hi, they ask if you need help if you looked lost (especially with all the remodeling). I would definitely shop here now again. Great service and reasonable prices. This is my go to supermarket. The staff is always friendly and I always find what I need. Added BONUS is that awesome gas rewards program they have with Sunoco gas stations. It's very convenient because my main service station is the Sunoco gas station around the corner at 1200 VFW Parkway in West Roxbury (Nick's Parkway Auto Repair). They are my favorite repair shop and gas station and now I get a discount on gas there from my favorite supermarket. Win, Win if you ask me !!! Nice program. read more

Don't shop here after 7:00pm on weekdays. Deli counter appears to be closed & help is obviously absent. At checkout cashier was too busy eating and slopped on some of my groceries. The killer is we had a bagger who appeared to be some type of manager but conveniently left 2 bags out of the cart. When brought to her attention she failed to acknowledge her error and just walked away. For a $200 sale you would expect a little better attentiveness and customer service. Now I know why there were only about 10 customers in the store. If this establishment wants to close at 5pm fine - just save the electricity and don't advertise you're open until 9pm. Buyer beware! Four times in the last two months I have shopped at Star Market and purchased items that are clearly displayed as being "on sale". The items have rung up at the regular price. Although I have addressed the issues with the cashiers, none have known what to do during the checkout. Sooo... with frozen items in tow, I have gone to the service desk to fix the pricing. They have to search for the item to verify the price and my frozen items start to melt....My frustration has fallen on deaf ears (i.e. tonight, the manager Jose sat in his office and listened to me express frustration without coming out until he was paged. And then he was annoyed to have to help me) and although I have complained to the powers that be at the Commonwealth, this situation clearly hasn't been rectified. Just be aware when your items are being rung up that there may be a price inaccuracy. OR shop at another grocery store where their pricing is done honestly.
