"now it ain't a bad thing, just different..." is how a townie tells it. these ferries make an odd pairing for the back or forth across the Green River for any purpose other than taking the car on a boat ride or otherwise idling away an afternoon as a person would be hard pressed to find a less convenient route from one to the other but seeing it's Kentucky there's probably a good reason for it all after all, like living right nearby to one or the other landings or maybe the fishing is good, or could be because, well, you know... Kentucky word of caution: the roads north of the Green River hereabouts aren't very roady. plenty of side-by-sides and other non-highway vehicles around being operated by people anywhere from eight to eighty so there's plenty of opportunities to meet folks by accident... so just drive nice... alright?

nice drive through the countryside to get here but the last bit gets tricky with the serious and…read morepersistent downhill to the landing. not exactly sure what's going on north of town but there's several large yards full of pumpjacks and tanks and what looks like miles of pipe so maybe it used to was oil fields underneath the row crops? upon arriving down by the Ohio River the pavement gets big and wide and open with abundant parking and the occasional riverside lunch and/or boat launching. if you're going across queue up and follow directions when the boat arrives. once on board turn off the engine, put it in park and if the water is calm get out and stretch your legs and talk to whoever else is around. this is a fair sized ferry so it mostly rides nice and smooth but sometimes nature happens so pay attention! another free river crossing! while this is an excursion for some it's a fact of life for others; about 500 vehicles cross here daily between southern illinois and far western kentucky doing commerce and tourism but mostly just everyday life. oddly, kentucky helps foot the bill here even though the commonwealth starts a fair way south of the landing. guess that's how they do things around here, neighborly - bless their crazy little selves :-)

If you're looking for a cave tour that combines incredible scenery, fascinating geology, and a bit of a workout, this is the one to book. The ranger-guided tour is well organized and packed with interesting information about the cave's history, formations, and the natural processes that shaped this underground world over millions of years. The descent into the cave through the natural sinkhole entrance is an adventure in itself, and while the 638-640 stairs sound intimidating, they're absolutely worth it. The highlight for us was Frozen Niagara. The stunning collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and delicate cave curtains is unlike anything we've ever seen. It's amazing to think these formations were created one drop of water at a time over thousands of years. Throughout the tour, the massive domes and enormous passageways constantly reminded us why Mammoth Cave is the world's longest known cave system. The guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to answer questions, making the experience both educational and enjoyable. The cave's constant 54-degree temperature also makes it a comfortable activity no matter the season. Be prepared for plenty of stairs and wear comfortable shoes, but don't let that discourage you. The tour is paced well, with opportunities to stop and admire the scenery along the way. If you're visiting Mammoth Cave National Park, the Domes & Dripstones Tour is an unforgettable experience and one we would enthusiastically recommend to anyone looking for a memorable underground adventure. I wish I just day tripped it and did not spend money to stay the night. I was travelling solo and…read morethis was my last stop before heading back to Maryland. I was arriving from St. Louis. I booked one of the historic cottages to stay the night and planned on hanging out in the bar on site. When I first arrived my cottage wasn't ready to check in yet and I still had a couple hours until my tour. I went to the restaurant and sat at the bar. I was informed that they did not have a bartender but the servers were rotating serving the guests at the bar. I was promptly greeted by the waitress but ultimately moved to a table because the chairs are not tall enough for the height of the bar. It would have been extremely awkward and uncomfortable to eat up there. I had a salad and sweet potato fries and two IPA beers. Everything was delicious and the service was great. I went on the Historic Cave tour which was great. I wish I remembered the rangers name who gave the tour because he was amazing and hilarious! After the tour we (another solo traveler and I) planned to go to the bar and grab a drink before she hit the road for her next stop. Upon arrival to the restaurant, the bar was open but the host (who admitted he was new and did not know what he was doing) refused to let us sit there. He said there was no bartender. I told him earlier they allowed people to sit there and the servers helped. He said they only had 3 servers so he handed us a buzzer to wait for a table. The restaurant had half of its tables open. She decided she didn't want to wait so she left. I was then frustrated because I did not want to sit at a table alone again so I ordered food to go and ate in my cabin. There is no service in the cabins because you are in the middle of nowhere. As a solo female traveler I rely on meeting people at restaurants by sitting at the bar. This on site restaurant clearly was not staffed well enough to accommodate their guests in the middle of the summer when everyone is travelling. The other stores that served coffee and ice cream were closed by the time I finished my 3:30 tour. The prices in the gift shop were extremely high and I refused to pay for a magnet that was $12.00. I ended up going to bed super early and hit the road at 3 am because there was nothing else to do. For these reasons and more, I would have preferred to come for my tour and left to stay somewhere else.

5 stars isn't enough for Kentucky Bourbon Boys…read more We packed an unbelievable amount into two days without ever feeling rushed or stressed. Day one included Whiskey Thief, Woodford Reserve, and Buffalo Trace. Day two took us through Bardstown Bourbon Company, Maker's Mark, and Heaven Hill. Every stop offered something completely different, and the lunches planned in advance were outstanding. The weather was perfect, but the real difference-maker was our driver and guide, Jeff Ramsey. Jeff was knowledgeable, funny, professional, always on time, and genuinely made the trip memorable. We do a lot of tours and experiences like this, and Jeff was simply the best guide we've had anywhere. Everything was seamless from start to finish. I won't book with any other group for future Bourbon Trail trips.

Fort Duffield Park & Historic Site is awesome! I love visiting to hike and walk the trails. B went…read moremountain biking here several times before I had the chance to visit, so he was familiar with the trails and was able to plan a great half day of walking and hiking for us. We had a blast! Plus, we were able to bring Batman (our Frenchie), and he loved it too. Fort Duffield contains the largest earthen Civil War fortress in Kentucky, which is pretty cool to see. It overlooks West Point, which makes for a nice view. We visited in January, when the trees hadn't yet bloomed, so we got a really great view from the overlook. I'm sure when all of the leaves are full the view isn't as clear, but the area is still beautiful. We also walked through the memorial cemetary, which is an awesome preservation of history. If you like visiting historical sites, this one is great. The walking trails are scenic, but still very easy to navigate. And if you prefer a more strenuous hike, you can create one for yourself. We'll definitely be back!

I'm a civil War buff so this place has some meaning and significance to me. The path or road to the…read moretop of the hill is a bit steep. The asphalt road leading up to the fort has been closed off for years. It appears that tree branches and other overgrowth have not been trimmed recently. Since Covid there hasn't been much activity or events which is unfortunate. Although no battles were fought here it was an important site to defend against the possibility of a Confederate attack. It's probably the best preserved earthen fortification of the Civil War that is still intact. A small memorial cemetery is located opposite the fort. The dead, as far as I know, have been reinterred closer to their homes I believe. Disease felled these unfortunate souls rather than bullets.
