True, the ground are nice but buying there is another story. Unlike big box stores and many local privately owned nurseries, Rock City Gardens does NOT stand by its inventory under new owners (who purchased in 2022) -- yet they charge significantly more than their competitors. Within six weeks of purchasing a Meyer lemon tree, its leaves turned yellow and leaves dropped, despite getting adequate water and overall care. (We're experienced gardeners) Tried to get an exchange, credit or refund -- or even an explanation -- but after several days of unanswered phone and email msgs, we finally heard back from nursery manager Stephanie who blew off our concerns and refused any assistance, citing "it's not our concern once it leaves the property." Over the years, we were devoted customers but things have steadily gone downhill with the new owners and staff. read more

I could not have asked for a more perfect day! My husband and I decided to get married quickly after being engaged. We only had 6 weeks from when we wanted it to be. We knew we wanted a beautiful place, intimate and where we could just show up. We researched top places for a small wedding and Rock city popped up in a top 20. After seeing the photos and being the only place with prices online, we called and they were able to meet us and show us the grounds the same day. First thing is first; not only does Vicki Green have a perfect name for her job but she also a perfect personality and love for what she does. Just walking around the garden with her and listening to her, we knew that she would be the perfect person to help us. Vicki helped us from start till literally the moment we got into our car, married. She helped with color ideas, made all the bouquets, boutonnières and corsages. She was there for the rehearsal and the day of. Helped with the music, escorting people to the bathroom and making sure people weren't walking into the bridal suite before I was ready. After the wedding she helped with making sure we had the best locations for photos. My day was stress free because of her. I honestly would not change a thing about that day. If you're on the fence, go and ask for Vicki! It was an hour away from our home, and I would have driven 2 hours. read more

We spent thousands of dollars to have new Landscaping put in the front of our house. Nothing complicated, bushes, two rocks, and planting of a tree. It took weeks and weeks to get a quote. When we did get the quote it took weeks for someone to get back to us so we could review it with them. It was installed in stages, which is OK, but it was a very lengthy process. The tree planted was at least 10 feet, a bottle brush tree, which is weeping. They didn't stake it. Unfortunately we we were not here and it eventually fell over onto the other plantings and damaged the trunk. The new owner stated they only stake palm tree trees. Never heard of such a thing especially when you have a 10 foot tree that's weeping. Lots of wind on the island and it should've been staked. My husband had to pull it up and when I called the owner, she said "they don't stake these trees, but maybe they should." In any case they came out, they staked the tree with a stake kit and the way they did it would have strangled the tree. They left no room for expansion of the trunk. My husband had to redo it. Now they want to charge me for the stake kit. Ha! Lots of other nurseries around like Busy Bee and Diggs, and they are both great. Save yourself some grief. read more

This is the most amazing garden center I have ever been to. Rock City Gardens has been owned since July 1, 1983 by Tom and Rhonda Lowe. The first owner was Ralph Ruhl who had worked at Fairchild Tropical Gardens and established the garden center known as Wabasso Nursery in the 60's. The next owners, the Chapins owned the Tennessee tourist attraction Rock City and decided to name their garden nursery after it. The Lowe's were working as teachers in Chicago when they decided it was time for a career and weather change. They moved to Florida and jumped into the Chapins garden business without even knowing anything about tropical gardening. When the Lowe's purchased the 7 acre business they learned quickly and ended up expanding the garden shop in 1985. They also built greenhouses and upgraded the grounds. In the past three years they have added outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, patios, and fountains, to showcase outdoor living. Wedding receptions are held underneath the huge trees at the back of the property. This garden center is incredible. The variety of plants, pots, statues, garden furniture, and many other items is staggering. There is a gorgeous nature trail that winds around their wetland preserve. So many inviting places have been created that make you want to relax and hang out. On the night I visited they had a free open house offering wine and food. I love how the Lowe's didn't even know about Florida plants but through hard work they transformed a weeded and neglected garden center into the tropical paradise you see today. Awesomely beautiful facility that is landscaped to the max. Such a beautiful walkabout with a nice of assortment of plants for sale as well as massive specimen plants. I would've given this place a much better review, but the staff was elusive at best and a bit rude when approached with a question. In fact, I spent almost $50 and even though I could see several empty boxes behind the register, when I asked the cashier if she had a box that I could put my 2 smaller, delicate plants in, she told me she didnt have one, ...WTH?? So, there's that. I'm saying if you want a beautiful stroll, go there, but if you want to buy plants, take your business where it's appreciated. read more

Flowering plants, herbs, succulents, fountains, urns, all arranged beautifully on impeccably cared for grounds. There is seating by the ponds where it would seem reasonable to sit and read or just ponder the day away. Wide variety of healthy plants, soil and garden stone, unique pieces of art for the yard. The ownership and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Plants are clearly labeled according to sun, soil and water requirements, as well as whether they attract pollinators. It is pricey, but as they say, you get what you pay for, and I would much prefer to support a local business making my community a more beautiful, sustainable place, than pay less for inferior products at a large retailer. read more

We left a deposit for a consultation for artificial turf. The person came over and we never got a quote. We called twice and still nothing. The third time Cathy told my husband they were slammed and hung up on him. First of all we paid $100 for the consultation and never even got a quote. We asked for a refund and were ignored. Cathy was extremely rude. I guess they don't need customers that bad that they can treat people that way. I will never go back and won't recommend. read more

Our first visit to Rock City Gardens was not helpful. Asking about what to use in our yard they immediately wanted us to book a consult. we only needed 2 bushes therefore they told us to just walk around their property and look ourselves. Did not call anyone to help us. In walking around my husband slipped in water around plants bruising his back and was covered in mud. A worker close by got him so water and went to look for accident report. A supervisor brought the forms, did not even look at him and proceeded to be on his way. I love visiting this place as I am a photographer. It's just not a nursery it's a place where you can take a stroll around the lake. Plenty of shady spots to find a bench to sit and enjoy nature. They have many plants and flowers for sale. The staff are very helpful and very friendly. read more

I do not recommend this company to do your landscaping. I had them install some trees they had on sale and they did not do it as they indicated and as a result, the trees died. I asked them to come out to see what the trouble was and they said too bad they do not guaranty their work! The people I spoke to were not friendly. read more

It was a nice area, the staff was friendly and the wedding was b-e-a-utiful! they only do about 5 weddings a year here so they're not the MOST prepared but it's an amazing location and you gotta check it out if you're in the area. I understand there's 7 acres on the property. Was there today for the first time and couldn't stop taking pictures on this beautiful day. Over 50 pix and two videos. This was comparable to walking through any botanical gardens. The grounds, the plantings, accessories, gifts, etc. All worth taking a look. The staff there eager to help and couldn't be nicer. I did manage to buy a few things in between all the picture taking. They even have people there (not on website) to help plan an event if needed. From weddings to private functions. I used Rock City Gardens for a landscaping job in my house. The work was well done and within budget. This company charges more than others in the area. Their mark up on plants is very high and their labor not cheap. They did however bring in their expertise, which is why I agreed to the job in the first place. read more

Such a disappointing experience on Sunday, January 29, 2017. There seemed to be only one very disinterested person working that day. She did not want to go out in the mist to suggest a plant for us to try. So, my husband brought one to her. She was on the phone, continued talking, and finally told whomever that she had to go because there was a customer. She was obviously annoyed. At that point my husband said he would just leave. Truly a shame that such a pretty nursery would be represented by such a person. Perhaps the owners don't realize the employee's lack of interest in her job and that she is costing them business.
