Jonny D'Amico's tour is an absolute must-do for anyone even remotely interested in the Sunset Strip history. I'm a repeat customer and never miss this tour when in LA. First off, this is real and not for weaklings. You will have to walk your ass off, and get the history of the entire neighborhood in a balls out, no holds barred way. This is not a stale corporate tour, with a guide reading a script and going through the motions followed by a tip can. Jonny is like visiting a long lost family member who will tell you all the hidden neighborhood stories, as you bump into locals and celebs alike while covering the major hotel, music venue, restaurants, etc. in the area. Jon does an amazing job keeping the group completely immersed in the WeHo and Sunset Strip scene, so much history and so many captivating stories. We had no idea how engaging this tour was going to be til we showed up and hit the street for several hours of info around the community, the rock scene, the actors and gangsters that hung out here. He sent a full summary including all the pictures he took of us along the way, as well as recommendations for movies to watch where we would then recognize the scenes. As we were on the walking tour, we watched boring tour buses with a driver narrating the experience with an obviously canned script. I've lived on the border of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills for eight years, so I knew something about the Sunset Strip already... But I took the opportunity of having an out-of-town friend visiting to take Jon's tour and be a tourist in my own neighborhood. I'd been to a lot of the bars and live music venues before, but it was a real treat to get into the "secret" areas, private rooms, backstage, etc. plus the "guests-only" areas of hotels (like rooftops, etc.). There are lots of other sites that are hidden in plain view, too -- and Jon does a good job of painting a picture of how everything fits together historically and culturally. The meeting spot is easy to find and centrally located, and the walking route is efficient and avoids some of the huge hills of the area. We still got quite the workout -- we walked at least 3.5 or 4 miles, maybe more, over the course of 3.5 hours! And the entire route was a loop, essentially dropping us off at our parking spot. Jon is a true "insider," having played several of these venues in his own band(s) and knowing the staff at each locale. He hooks you up with a VIP lanyard for the duration of the tour and a wristband you get to keep. And he was good at checking in on us to make sure we were happy throughout the tour. I really appreciated that he accommodated our schedule and actually conducted the tour later in the evening than he usually does -- and yet still got us into nearly all the spots. Honestly, there was already so much to see and talk about, it really didn't feel like we were missing out on anything. I might've liked a slightly more leisurely pace with more of a relaxed atmosphere -- maybe stopping for a drink at the Rainbow or grabbing a slice of pizza somewhere -- but I didn't feel the sense of urgency to cram in all the sites, since I live in the area. Visitors who don't live here will get a really full and thorough experience of the Sunset Strip on this tour. Since the heart of the tour is the "sex, drugs, and rock n roll" narrative, it's best for adult audiences that aren't going to be uptight about some of the seedier factoids. That being said, I bet teenagers who are into classic rock would love it. read more

My good friend's husband Jon, has this über cool business for tourists and locals. This review is loooong overdue. My classmate from Hawaii came to LA in February 2020, so I booked this tour with Jon. It was very affordable for the amount of time we walked and stopped--I believe 3-4 hours. We met at Barney's Beanery, and from there we walked to La Cienega and went to Alta Cienega Motel (room 32), where Jim Morrison of The Doors lived from 1968-1970. Then we walked to other various clubs, hotels, and a little book store that was hidden called Mystery Pier Books. They have rare & first edition books, and movie scripts too. From there we went to the Viper Room & got drinks, and then went to 5 more more stops on the strip. I was EXHAUSTED! Jon was an amazing and animated storyteller. From a tourist perspective, there are a million things to do in Los Angeles. But if you are a fan of rock 'n roll and especially the nostalgia and deeper cultural nuances of the music and all it inspires - especially as it has all played out in the colorful and complicated culture of Los Angeles' wild vibe - nothing can touch the experience you'll have on the Rock 'n Walk Tour. Seriously. It all starts with Jonny D'Amico, the owner and tour guide. He's one of those tour guides you can't forget. He is on point, a veteran in the industry (on multiple levels), completely fluent in the history and scene, connected to everyone on and around the Sunset Strip, and demanding of YOU, the customer, to bring your interest and attention to what he has worked so hard to understand and convey. I appreciated that. But it comes with some cost: you need to keep up, let him run the show, and let him take the pictures. He's fast, efficient, and keeps the tour running for 3+ hours without a minute to spare while he churns out stories at a wild pace. The next day, he sends you all the photos before you even wake up. Completely pro. Jonny's intensity is half the fun because, at least for me, it's a pleasure to watch someone love what they do enough to be so serious and expect it from me. He loves the peculiar world of Rock 'n Roll - in all of its forms - and especially it's place in West Hollywood folklore. Nobody could paint a better picture of that. This also comes at a "cost," some might say. Rock 'n Roll isn't always pretty or polite. He gets into all the ridiculous incidents that have taken place, where they happened and what they meant in the context of bigger things. This includes all the raunchy psychotic frenzy of Rock 'n Roll's past. If you do this tour, all of this is part of the story. Deal with it and learn from it or don't go. It says a lot about American pop culture. Leaving it out would be untruthful. Jonny doesn't mince words and if you're like me, you won't want him to. Bring great walking shoes, walk fast, follow Jonny's lead, and soak up this one-of-a-kind experience. Jonny and his tour are hopelessly authentic. read more

First I want to emphasize that I haven't reviewed any trip activities in years but this was such an awesome experience that I was compelled to write one for the Rock'n Walk Tour with Jonny. We just did the day tour Thursday 10/12/23 with 2 other couples. The tour was epic! We saw things that are not assessable to the public or probably no other tour. Jonny has been involved with the rock scene for a long time and is not only connected on the strip but extremely knowledgeable, played in bands, and was a stage manager for multiple big rock bands. He is legit. We had a slower couple with us so the tour was a little longer than advertised, (4hrs), but Jonny took no short cuts, we saw it all! I suggest being ready for 10k steps at a brisk pace. Read a book on rock history or favorite 60s/70s bands. The tour brings all this to life. Jonny guided us to some great live rock music that night which was at the Viper. We even got the cover waived since we were there earlier that day in the tour!! I want to thank you Jonny for suck a kick a$$ tour and experience!! read more

Manditory for all you locals. I loved this historic tour of MY CITY. I'm a local. Born in Hollywood and raised in LA, so WHY did I pay good money to take this tour of my own city? Like most Los Angelinos, I have walked (stumbled on occasion, and even crawled) the Sunset Strip. For decades. However, I had a feeling this historic tour would be good for me. Well WOW, I was blown away. It was much more than I expected. I arrived late and Jon ran to find me and reunite me with our group, never making it a problem which I really appreciated. He has a really casual way about him and introduced me to the group in a way that made me feel like they were all immediately my friends. He took us to FORBIDDEN back-stage behind-the-scenes places that I've never seen or even knew existed. OMG. Jon gives little-known facts about the rich & raunchy history of the Sunset Strip. I wont say more so as not to ruin the experience for you. Keep in mind: Jon is a rock n roll historian but he's also a former punk rock bass player so if your grandmother is offended by straight talk about rock n roll debauchery, leave her at home. read more

I'm a huge rock/metal fan and so are my sons. I brought two of my sons, ages 16 and 19, to L.A. for a music-themed trip. I knew I wanted to spend time on the Sunset Strip exploring the rock history so I decided to take this tour. I was blown away! The owner/guide, Jon, was incredibly knowledgable and also a very cool dude. Also key was the fact that he knows people at all the venues, bars, restaurants, and other cool spots so he has access to get into places that we never would have otherwise had, including, for example, backstage at the Whisky, in the secret party rooms at the Rainbow, and swanky, exclusive clubs and bars. My head was exploding from all the history he shared with us. This tour ended up being the highlight of the trip.
