Where Janis Joplin left her mark at Barney's Beanery

I've lived on the border of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills for eight years, so I knew something about the Sunset Strip already... But I took the opportunity of having an out-of-town friend visiting to take Jon's tour and be a tourist in my own neighborhood. I'd been to a lot of the bars and live music venues before, but it was a real treat to get into the "secret" areas, private rooms, backstage, etc. plus the "guests-only" areas of hotels (like rooftops, etc.). There are lots of other sites that are hidden in plain view, too -- and Jon does a good job of painting a picture of how everything fits together historically and culturally. The meeting spot is easy to find and centrally located, and the walking route is efficient and avoids some of the huge hills of the area. We still got quite the workout -- we walked at least 3.5 or 4 miles, maybe more, over the course of 3.5 hours! And the entire route was a loop, essentially dropping us off at our parking spot. Jon is a true "insider," having played several of these venues in his own band(s) and knowing the staff at each locale. He hooks you up with a VIP lanyard for the duration of the tour and a wristband you get to keep. And he was good at checking in on us to make sure we were happy throughout the tour. I really appreciated that he accommodated our schedule and actually conducted the tour later in the evening than he usually does -- and yet still got us into nearly all the spots. Honestly, there was already so much to see and talk about, it really didn't feel like we were missing out on anything. I might've liked a slightly more leisurely pace with more of a relaxed atmosphere -- maybe stopping for a drink at the Rainbow or grabbing a slice of pizza somewhere -- but I didn't feel the sense of urgency to cram in all the sites, since I live in the area. Visitors who don't live here will get a really full and thorough experience of the Sunset Strip on this tour. Since the heart of the tour is the "sex, drugs, and rock n roll" narrative, it's best for adult audiences that aren't going to be uptight about some of the seedier factoids. That being said, I bet teenagers who are into classic rock would love it.

My good friend's husband Jon, has this über cool business for tourists and locals. This review is loooong overdue. My classmate from Hawaii came to LA in February 2020, so I booked this tour with Jon. It was very affordable for the amount of time we walked and stopped--I believe 3-4 hours. We met at Barney's Beanery, and from there we walked to La Cienega and went to Alta Cienega Motel (room 32), where Jim Morrison of The Doors lived from 1968-1970. Then we walked to other various clubs, hotels, and a little book store that was hidden called Mystery Pier Books. They have rare & first edition books, and movie scripts too. From there we went to the Viper Room & got drinks, and then went to 5 more more stops on the strip. I was EXHAUSTED! Jon was an amazing and animated storyteller. I will do the Beverly Hills tour when we are safe to do so. Thank you Jonny! XO

While this has got to be the best way to see some of LA's most iconic sites, the best part of the tour is the lesser-known but much more interesting stories and in-the-know locations. A tour with Jon is a truly memorable event. There are fascinating stories told in his knowledgeable way that really bring the scenes and locations to life. Jon will wind you through the rock, celebrity, and infamous people and places that makes it fun and memorable for the entire group. He is truly a gift to the city and the opportunity to share a half-day with him was the absolute #1 highlight of our trip to West Hollywood!!! Thank you Jon!!! (Next time we run it so we can cover even more ground)

Rock 'n Walk Tours is an absolute MUST for music and entertainment buffs or anyone who is interested in the history of West Hollywood. This is not your average, run-of-the-mill Hollywood tour. My husband and I took the Rock 'n Walk tour with Jon on a Saturday afternoon. Before our tour started, Jon told us that he would have our heads spinning. We had barely taken our first steps when our heads were not only spinning but had been blown away and off our shoulders. No kidding! If you've ever wondered about what really happened on the Sunset Strip back in its heyday or if you just want to learn more about local history, this is the tour for you. My husband is a huge music and entertainment fan, and this was the best tour I could have ever taken him on. You will learn so many fun facts and fascinating tidbits on the tour and gain context into the origins of West Hollywood and how the celebrities, musicians, and key players helped shape the famous boulevard. Jon has lived the West Hollywood music scene, not only as a resident himself but also as a musician. He is heavily involved and respected throughout the community and a wealth of knowledge with countless interesting facts. His connections provide him access to restricted areas and back rooms that the average person would likely not know even existed. Jon knows all the hidden gems and secret hideaways as he took us to the most famous clubs on the Sunset Strip where new meaning was given to the phrase "If these walls could talk." Because Jon grew up in the area and lived the music scene himself as a musician, he has real insider knowledge. He's done extensive research to add to his intriguing accounts and has a photo gallery he shares along the tour to substantiate much of the tour content. Jon is a constant stream of knowledge, packing the tour with fascinating nuggets of information, not only about legendary locations but some of the most famous celebrities around. Jon's energy and excitement is unmatched as he makes the tour so much fun and personal. Another bonus of the Rock 'n Walk tour is Jon's photography skills as he documents this one-of-a kind tour with photographs of all the hot spots along the way, so no need to bother yourself with finding just the right location; Jon has you covered and doesn't let a photo op pass by. Jon genuinely loves what he does, and it was evident after only minutes spent with him. He's a really great guy and will show you the best time on this tour. There is absolutely nothing else like it and completely worth every penny. Wear comfortable shoes and be ready to move at a pretty good clip because there is a lot of ground to cover, and he packs it all in. We did an afternoon tour but will be coming back to take the night tour next time as we are told the experiences are very different. Whether it's a daytime tour or a nighttime tour, you won't be disappointed. It will be a blast and something you will never forget.

Awesome walking tour! Set up and gifted to me by my Daughter :), I highly recommend it to anyone who has any interest in the past or present Sunset Strip music scene. Jon is connected and very knowledgeable, personable, witty, likeable and full of rock 'n roll energy. The behind-the-scenes access & stories shared by Jon of infamous and scandalous nights out, the tragedies and triumphs of iconic music legends and locations is superb! AAAA++++

Not much to say about Jonny and the Rock and Walk Tour except is was ABSOLUTELY amazing! So much fun! Even if you're a SoCal native you learn things you can't read about in a book or magazine and have one heck of a great time doing it! We cannot wait to go back and do the night tour! Jonny is the best!!!!

Arrived Early, Treated Rudely, Safety Issues, 30+ Minutes Late…read more We prepaid for the 11:00 AM open-air tour 4 days in advance and arrived at 10:40 AM with printed confirmation stating the bus leaves on time and all late arrivals are bumped to the next tour. Instead, we were repeatedly told to "come back closer to 11" and then that there was a "bus issue" and come back at 11:15 am. We wandered around in the cold. We checked in 3-4 times because we had lunch plans after the 2-hour tour. Staff claimed another group was late (which turned out NOT to be true). Meanwhile, employees were trying to recruit more passengers. Only after we said we were canceling 30 minutes late, did they send us to board a bus. The driver was nice, but one seat behind him had no working seat belt. Three blocks after leaving, the bus was called back to pick up a group of 8 even though there were only 7 seat belts available. We were pressured to give up our safe seats and wait for another bus. We refused to exit. We refused to sit without a seat belt. The older male staff member was aggressive and extremely rude. The tour left over 30 minutes late. Disorganized, misleading, RUDE older man and unsafe. Horrible experience for the start of our vacation. Would NOT recommend.
