The bowhunter was the most delicious "grape juice" I've ever tasted , never having a sweet red before , the crowd of people were in a good mood and there was a wedding going on near by . Went Sunday and did the wine tasting . Went with mostly white and all were pretty good. The place is set up really nice out in country . We sat outside and we brought crackers and cheese and enjoyed the music . What made this place was the server . She had only been there for a short period but she was so kind and answered all our questions. She really made the place great . We will be back. read more

Amazing family friendly atmosphere for a winery in the country between Portage and Madison. Shaun and his staff do a great job serving delicious wine and food! Fun events such as Caustic Bingo and corn hole tournaments! Don't pay any attention to the people complaining about Caustic Bingo - they are Karen's. If you can't enjoy a laugh while playing bingo and drinking wine, go back home and sit by yourself! The wine is delicious! I love sweet wine so Blueberry and Bowhunter are our favorites. If you don't like sweet wine or are a wine snob, go back home. Or just anywhere else and complain. This place has become a must see destination. Not only are there activities in the summer but even in the winter it's a cool place to hang out, drink Wisconsin wine, and relax. The tasting area is in an historic barn perfect for photos. The wine is SO GOOD! There is one that goes great with chocolate like you wouldn't believe. But my favorite that is now requested at every social gathering is their blueberry wine. Something really cool is that their fruit wine is made from local fruit and is so tasty!!!! Taste Wisconsin & drink some happy juice! My friend and I stayed for a couple of hours. They even had pizzas to snack on while we were there. Oh, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Stopped here on our way to Wisconsin Dells. It's a large barn that looks pretty cool. The winery is located in the barn. They have a good selection of wine. Their fruit wines are probably the best in my opinion! They also have a lemon wine that is kind of a must try. And the service wasn't bad. They host weddings and it would be a beautiful venue for a wedding. Check this place out, if you like wine! read more

Stopped at the Rock and Wool Winery in Poynette on a sunny first day of Spring. We were welcomed by the owner/wine maker. He put together flights for all of us based on our wine preferences. We enjoyed all the wines, the atmosphere, and the friendly service. We sat around a table in comfortable chairs near a fire. A winding staircase went up to a loft. It was rustic and so relaxing. This Wisconsin Winery near Madison has a friendly atmosphere. I've gone a few times and each time the service was excellent. The wine is delicious. I like the fact that it is all Wisconsin grapes. I've noticed that a lot of Wisconsin wineries import from other places. If I go to a Wisconsin Winery, I expect it to be Wisconsin Wine. I had a wine tasting which was personal and fun! I'm definitely going to celebrate my birthday here. It's right in the middle of everywhere for me. I plan on having a corporate event here or at least a team-building event. I think it would be really cool to have a wine tasting with the winemaker, which might be something they offer. My friends are huge disc golf people and they have a disc golf course. Drinking and disc golf is a fun activity for all. I am TERRIBLE but after a glass of wine, I didn't care. I was just having fun! One time I went, there were kid-friendly activities and despite not having kids, I was asked if I wanted to join so I would feel included. I appreciate that. I'm of an age where my friends have kids and if I want to spend time with them, I need to find places we can all hang out. This is the place for all, including dogs (kept outside, not in the barn or buildings). My roommate just got a puppy and was hesitant to leave him at home so we brought him to one of the outdoor concerts. People were so kind and both my roommate and her puppy had so much fun! Overall, this is a place to visit and revisit over and over again. It is an essential Wisconsin Experience for everyone! read more

This was our seventh Harvest Host location. I have PROS and CONS about this one. PROS: Very nice property. The barn and its decor are adorable. There is an ample seating area outside with beautiful views of the grounds. Cute play area for kids. Roomy sites where we parked our rv for the night. They run free Bingo on the weekends, for locals, visitors, and campers. It was a unique thing to do, and a fun idea. CONS: About that Bingo game...we sat next to a couple of regular attenders. They warned us that Bingo was crude, but fun. They were right. If you aren't into crude humor, or it makes you uncomfortable, don't participate. The rv camping location is far enough away from the Bingo area, so if you don't want to hear crude Bingo, or innuendos, etc., stay at the camping area. How crude is crude, you may ask? I don't really consider myself a prude, but I was uncomfortable at times. More importantly, though, we found the staff to be rude from the moment we got there. We arrived, walked into the barn where the bar is. We said, "Hi, we're from Harvest Host." There was one employee there. She didn't look up from scrolling on her cellphone, and replied, "Did you park where you're supposed to?" I'm being honest here. That is exactly what she said. No looking up from her phone, no friendly welcome or hello or anything. I found it surprising, because all the other Harvest Host sites we have visited have been extremely friendly and welcoming. We tasted some wines, and as other HH sites we have visited, they have adapted their procedures for Covid, etc. Their pours were on the small side in comparison to other sites, and the per bottle pricing was also higher than others. You are in Wisconsin; yes you get a red and a white, but mostly fruit or sweet wines here as they only use grapes grown in Wisconsin. Get a glass (with the paid tasting or you can pay for a single glass) and enjoy the property. Just a note to the owners: you can probably have someone develop recipes using some of these wines. This is hands down my favorite winery in Wisconsin. An old barn was converted into a cute a comfortable bar and tasting room. They're happy to let you taste every wine on the menu and give excellent descriptions and pairing suggestions. I love that all the grapes and other fruits used in their wines are actually grown in Wisconsin. They have a really great selection of white wines--Nadia Jo was my favorite. The cherry and apple ice wines are also interesting options. It was difficult to decide which bottles to bring good because I liked most of them. And last, but not least, I loved petting their sweet donkeys. read more

My friends and I went to their haunted wagon ride this year. While the wine tasting and two free drinks plus the wagon ride were worth the $30 ticket, what ruined it was the wine maker/owner, Sean. He was the emcee on the stage while we were in line for the wagon ride. He appeared to be quite intoxicated, making crude comments (i.e. "Let's get naughty!" "We used to have sex with strangers in my day, oh now I'm in trouble, my wife won't have sex with me tonight!" "I can't wait to get off this stage and party with you beautiful women.") We felt VERY uncomfortable. We had thought about coming back for bingo sometime, however when Sean said he's the one on the mic, I knew I would never be back. Such a shame, I liked the wine, the venue is beautiful and I love supporting local, however I will not be giving that man any of my money. read more

Hmm, what to say? LOVE! Just a short drive from Madison and it is a great place to taste and congregate. Free or inexpensive tastings. 4 for free (and often add a fifth or sixth) and the whole menu, with a follow-up glass of wine and a souvenir glass for $10. Yes, you heard me right. A little tipsy to drive home? Have a pizza, $10, hot, fresh and enjoy the seating. They have animals (I did not see them), it was rainy that day. Perfect for dates or large parties. Do you like sweet wines? This is your mecca. I am a red wine snob. And this had some great red wine options. Overall, I will go back. Next time I would like to help with harvest! The wine selection is ok. We came for one of their biweekly bingo nights and it was very crowded and rowdy. The caller was borderline rude to some customers. I found myself wanting to leave shortly after arriving. Parking was also difficult. May be a different story if we came on a different night to just do a tasting. My Fiance and I stumbled across this winery on our way home. We did the $10 tasting and got to try all 10 wines and at the end you get a glass of your choice and the physical glass. We are pretty big wine lovers and have been to many wineries. During the tasting we like every one, we even ended up buying 4 bottles. I have never been to a tasting where I liked everything I tried. What a wonderful winery! My friends and I saw this winery at Madison's Uncorked Wine festival, and were very impressed by what we tasted there. We decided to make the 45 minute drive today to scope out the winery and see what other wines they had to offer. First of all, the space is beautiful. Very rustic and inviting. There were a couple of options for wine tasting. You could do a free tasting which included a certain number of wines OR you could pay $10, try ALL their wines, get a full glass of wine at the end AND keep your glass. So obviously, that's what we did. Definitely worth it! Now, my group is not much for sweet fruity wines. We preferred the 2 or 3 dry wines in the line up... but.... the fruit wines were definitely the best I have ever had! They weren't overly sugary sweet. The sweetness tasted natural and fruity. We all definitely appreciated that, and can recognize the high quality even if fruit wine isn't our favorite. So once we finished the tasting and settled on our picks for our full wine pour (I picked the Harvest, it was amazing), we went to go sit down. There's plenty of space, indoor and outdoor for seating. We decided to go upstairs where there were church pews lined up against both walls. It was very cozy and inviting. Rock N Wool also sells pizza and cheese plates (which we were too full to partake in), but the pizza smelled very good. We chatted with the owner a little bit on our way out and he was very nice and appreciative of our business. After another glass of wine, we purchased bottles to go home with and headed out. This was truly a great experience. Rock N Wool has to be one of the better Wisconsin wineries. Definitely recommend! read more

He personally greeted us, offered us complementary glasses of wine and we could tell he really cared about being a local distributor of wine. My husband surprised me with a visit to Rock N Wool Winery on a "Date Day". We'd had the opportunity to enjoy Rock N Wool wine before, but this was our first visit to the winery. What a great experience! The converted barn is a unique, casual venue for wine tastings and the grounds and surrounding area are beautiful! We are not wine experts, and we appreciated the chance to try and learn about different wines. We did the $10 wine tasting, which I highly recommend. We had the opportunity to enjoy wines we would never have thought to try otherwise and discovered some new favorites. Tastings are fun and casual. The staff is knowledgeable about and very proud of their wines. I'd recommend the tasting to wine aficionados and casual wine drinkers alike. It's a great chance to try something new and to make new friends. We had four other couples drop in for tastings while we were there and thoroughly enjoyed talking with them. Rock N Wool distinguishes themselves from other Wisconsin wineries by using exclusively WI grapes and juices. It doesn't get more local than that! We were lucky enough to be treated to a tour of the vineyard (thank you Shaun!) and grounds and found out that the barn is available for weddings at a fraction of other venues in the area!
