I have never ridden on or driven an ATV before today and I have to tell you- this was by far one of the most fun and beautiful things I have ever done! I will cherish the memories made today with my family and friends forever. We rented full day, 0800-1700, Polaris RZRs. There were 6 of us- 2 families of 3. We got in a little late, around 10am due to staying in Montrose the night before. They have to shuttle you up to the beginning of the trail due to a change in law from November 2021. They don't allow ATV/OHV use in town. So, it takes 15 min to get up to the area where you will get your ATV and be fitted for a helmet. Bring rain gear, hoodies, hat, sunscreen, charger for your phone or battery pack. The lunch provided was very good and we did bring more water and snacks. Recommend you do the same also. Since we left late, we had to rush a bit and not stop and see as much as we wanted but this did NOT deter from the sheer awesomeness of the trip. It is beautiful. I cannot convince you of this from photos or a video. You have to see if for yourself. The drive is bumpy. It is fun. It is on the edge of very tall mountains. I made my family scared by my driving- I guess I drive too fast and too close to the edge. I had so much fun! There are bathrooms along the way if needed. We found the maps useful. We did not use our phone map with the app at all. We probably should have- but there are signs and it is pretty easy. Staff explained it all before we left. Take Alpine loop to Animas Fork- see the ghost town- go to Cinnamon Pass and take that to Lake City. Drive through Lake City and follow sign to Engineer Pass. At the top of Engineer Pass- look ahead of where you going and you will see the trial go off to the right. This is Odom Point- you MUST MAKE TIME to stop there. It is the best view! People get married there and I see why. Then follow the trail back. We got rained on on the way back and it was COLD on the hot summer day. My hands got so cold I couldn't feel them. I also got soaked and covered in mud. I had so much fun but would have been happier if I had listened to my husband and brought rain gear. Rock Pirate employees were so helpful and nice and we are so grateful for all their help and advice. I would highly recommend them for any adventure! I cannot wait to do this again and would love to come back for a snowy experience in Silverton with them! read more

We were a group of 14 on 4 different machines. Our first contact with Tom when getting everyone signed in, he was incredibly rude & disrespectful. He thought our party had come through there before & caused a lot of problems, when my husband assured him that was not us he didn't seem to care or believe him and continued being rude. (This was a repeat trip for only 3 of the 14) The website says gas is included yet we were charged over $300 for a "gas charge" when the final bill came out, in years past, my husband said this never happened. There was no communication as to why we were charged this excess fee & when my husband asked to talk to Erik who he had worked with in years past, Tom refused to let him speak to him. I called to speak with Erik and was told he would call me back, he never did. Our 4 machines were returned with gas, they didn't have to drive to us with gas cans. The tires on the machines were worn but 1 machine in particular was very worn. We got a flat on the top of a mountain but thankfully there were some kind people who gave us a plug & aired us back up so we could get on our way. We got a 2nd flat (same bald tire) as we neared Rock Pirate & pushed the helping hands button, we waited but after 45 minutes the majority of us decided to head into town with the other 3 machines thinking we'd pass our "help" on the way but never did. The teens working were nowhere in sight but eventually did come out from behind the shop but didn't know anything about our call for assistance. They never got it. Hmmmm.....Eventually they finally headed out to get my husband. If you want a pleasant up front experience from employees that treat you with kindness & respect, honest workers that don't charge you because they feel like it, I would steer clear of this place! Pretty sure this will end up being the highlight of our Colorado trip. If you are trying to make it to the old mining town, Animas Forks, make sure you do a half day rental at least. The gentleman who I made the reservation with had great advice and even though I was originally contemplating a 2 hr rental, he let me know we can't get anywhere in 2 hours. We also were able to bring our 4 year old in his car seat. For the first half of the journey I felt like I was in Switzerland - it was that beautiful. Wow, I should have checked Yelp and paid attention to the 1-star reviews on these people. These guys are the absolute worst, most unprofessional business I've ever come across. We made a reservation 2 days in advance and when the power and cell phones went out in Lake City, we we're forced to change our flights because we we're told by an employee in town that the last time the power went out it was out for 2 days. I stopped by Rock Pirates to cancel our reservation the day before and we're told that 'they'd never heard of the power grid going out and we'd be forced to pay the full $460." Are you serious?? I told them we had no choice with no communication methods and reason to believe it might take awhile to restore power (we had no power, no reception, and no running water). We thought as business owners they would be reasonable and allow us to cancel the reservation, especially since it was still 24 hours in advance. However the owner told me he "would be out of business" if he made an exception to their cancellation policy. You know who won't charge you in advance and keep your card in file in case you need to cancel for an emergency? Lake City Auto Sports right down the road, who are also much cheaper. Told them I needed to cancel and they just did it, no questions asked. Wow, what night and day difference. Highly recommend checking out the numerous other OHV rental places in town for a better deal and better human decency, in case you ever run into an emergency like we did. read more

We rented a 4 person RZR XP4 1000 for a halfday and opted for the "self guided" tour. I have never driven an ATV, but have a a fair amount of off-road exprience with Jeeps. The staff gave a brief, but detailed overview on how to work the machine and vital tips and tricks. As for naviagtion, I serisously get lost in supermarkets. We opted for Animas Forks and the GPS "tablet" they give you really does take care of everything - just follow along on the trail. The trails are marked and even we had no issues getting around. My Wife was amazed because it was one of the first times on our adventure we actually knew where we were. I somewhat whish we had rented full-day and drove the entire "Alpine loop" - but thankful we did not, we did not have enough gear/food and I was still learning the machine. I feel confident enough now to be able to rent again and drive the loop. Few tips: -Do some reading on off-road etiquette, just know the basics -Leave early, we left at 8 a.m. and the trails were empty on the way out -Ear plugs - these things are loud and after a few hours I wish I had them -We brought our kiddos (8 and 10) so be sure to bring gear for all weather (jackets, gloves, etc) -Go to WalMart and buy $2 bandanna's for everyone - keeps the dust out of your mouth -Wear a helmet - yes technically you are not required, but seriously -Gloves - just makes it easier for driving -Cooler - it will fit, be sure to bring a rope for tie-downs -Bring a GoPro and stick it on the front, worth it -Understand your are going to be a total mess when you get back read more

In what will be the highlight to our Colorado trip, we booked a two hour snowmobile tour for Christmas afternoon. After signing in and getting fitted for a helmet we were given our snowmobile orientation by our guide and off we went. Over the next two hours we were treated to what has to be some of the most beautiful mountain snowmobiling. Our guide, Chuck, took us to several stops where we were able to gaze at the views and capture some photos. He was more that willing to suggest some great pictures as well as take them. We were first time snowmobilers and felt well looked after by Chuck who even supplied a cup of hot chocolate at the end of the trip. Anyone we interacted with was great. Fantastic experience and highly recommend. On a side note, I mentioned to our tour guide Chuck the strange case of my rear window shattering on the drive out to the tour start. Chuck said if it would be helpful he had some plastic and tape at his house which wasn't too far from where we were staying. An hour later, he drove out to our hotel and sealed my window for me until I could get it fixed. What a great guy and nice Christmas gift! Thanks, Chuck! read more

Jody and her crew helped shuttle four people two dogs and gear to a remote cabin in Silverton. Everyone was very pleasant and easy to work with. The young man who drove us was wonderful. Funny and patient with us. We made him take a wrong turn that got kind of hairy and he was very good natured about it. All the people in the shop seemed very customer oriented and enthusiastic about their service and sport. The equipment was in very good shape. I would highly recommend this company. read more

We visited Silverton, CO at the end of September and decided to rent a Polaris Razor from Rock Pirates. Do yourself a favor and be sure to download maps onto your phone and back up battery charge source. We were about six hours into our adventure when we discovered the tablet they provide for GPS was dead and wouldn't charge. As we attempted to get signal to find out which direction we needed to head towards to return to Silverton, another Rock Pirates customer approached us, asking for directions (their GPS had died and wouldn't charge). This is where the story gets interesting. I ended up down a trail that lead me to a highway. I had no sense as to where i was and only option at this time was to follow a convoy of wheelers who could hopefully lead me to a familiar area or to a place where there is some signal and I could make a phone call. We had maybe 40 minutes of sunlight left and my phone battery was at 10%. You do not have ANY signal while in these trails, luckily at the trail head we had a couple of bars and I was able to call. The manager (I have forgotten her name at this point) was very unprofessional. Her biggest concern was that it wasn't her problem to get the machine back to Rock Pirates. She advised me to trek back through the trail that I had come. At this point I had no idea which trails I had followed and didn't have the confidence to attempt to navigate through the trails. It was about to be dark, temperatures were dropping and I was about to be with no phone. Not to mentions I literally have roughly 6 hours of experience driving through these trails. The manager argued with my wife on the phone and blatantly ignored our concerns about not being able to "turn around and go the way you came". I finally told her that she can do what she needs to do to get her machine back and I will find us a way home. It was at that point she finally offered to send someone to help us, but not without attempting to make me feel guilty for having to do so by saying, " I guess I'll send one of my guys to drive it back through the trails in the dark." When the gentleman showed up, roughly about an hour later, they loaded the Razor up with all kinds of extra gear, down jacket, two spare tires, a complete tool kit, stabilization blocks, extra GPS, and spot trackers. I have a brief conversation with these guys about all the equipment. He told me, "...you did the right thing by not going back into the trails. I know these trails inside-out and backwards and wouldn't have ever tried to send you in there from here; without the right gear, you and your wife would've been a search and rescue mission." I asked him how long it would take him to make it back and he said roughly 3 and a half hours from where we were. Can you believe she wanted me to attempt to do this?!?!?! So after making our way back to Silverton, the gentleman who drove us, very friendly, ask us to hold on while he asks the manager to come chat with us and make sure everything is fine. She refused to come outside and talk to us. She knew she was in the wrong. God awful service. I write this review not to deter anyone from doing this adventure, but to inform you that you must be better prepared than we were and DO NOT DEPEND ON ROCK PIRATES. read more

We had such a great time doing the Alpine Loop to Animas Forks while riding in our 6 seater Polaris Ranger!! If you have a doubt on cost for the rental, don't... ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!! I highly recommend this trail ride and would even consider it a bucket list adventure to be had:) read more

Great times were had and many memories were made on our Backcountry Adventure! The staff at Rock Pirates was super friendly and helpful. They provided a map with lots of useful info about the Silverton area as well as the OHV trails outside of town. They also provided a GPS unit that made it easy to know exactly where we were at any given time. The machine we rented ran great and was comfortable (which was appreciated since we were in it for about 8 hours!). There was a device in the machine that would signal for help in case something broke down or anything bad happened while out on the trails. (Thankfully we didn't need it, by it gives great peace of mind to have it available.) We got all the way around the Alpine Loop in a full day with our rented machine, but there is so much to see and do that we can't wait to go back! No doubt that we will be calling Rock Pirates again the next time we are in Silverton!! Update July 2018: We went back to Silverton the week of July 4th and rented a machine for 4 days during the week. Everyone we dealt with was super friendly and helpful (as always) and we had an absolutely amazing time!! Awesome day in San Juan Mountains. The equipment was great, they gave us great advice and directions. We did a full day and crossed at both Cinnamon and Engineering Pass. The scenery is so beautiful it's hard to describe. We did Cinnamon Pass first then had lunch at Lake City and returned on Engineering Pass. Take gloves and warm clothes, it's cold at the top of the mountains. Great overall experience an unforgettable day. read more

We had a great time today with our full-day rental of the Razr ORV. *Definitely* do this if you're in the Durango/Silverton area, BUT be prepared! Even in the summer, it's COLD! Lots of layers (including gloves)--and, since the vehicles are open, top layer should be waterproof. Otherwise, people were friendly, and service was great--an excellent adventure! read more

Riders and renters beware of using a rented RZR on the Alpine Loop trails and being charged for small pinhole in still obvious tread use area of tire by Rock Pirates staff. While driving Hurricane Pass on the Alpine Loop (see pictures) we discovered the passenger right side tire had a small hole and was leaking. We stopped and inspected the tire and confirmed a small hole that was leaking. A Jeep guy behind us gave us some air while we carefully plugged the tire to keep doing any damage or other issues. We immediately preceded back to the rental place to ensure they were aware and see if the pressure was ok and that no other issues existed . Keep in mind the alpine loop is full of rocks and sharp object so majority of the units tires for rentals are chunked, slit, and obviously well used by the trail conditions. We were honest and showed them exactly the location and talked with the manager. He said sorry that's sidewall damage and you will be paying for full repair. $390.10 was what was rung up on top of $425 rental fee + $15 premier insurance which we had purchased. After making him aware that we would be leaving a review and pictures he reluctantly agreed to go half of the $390.10 tire "damage" fee so in the end we got charged $425 rental +$15 insurance + $150.65 for "damaged tire". As a former Polaris race team member, and now owning a business that supplies to Polaris I am very very disappointed with how Rock Pirates handled this issue. As I was personally referred by a Polaris executive friend to this Polaris Adventures associate store I would have expected much better and I will be making her aware of how this was handled. Most importantly our next return to Silverton (with family next month) we will not be returning to Rock Pirates and will ensure that we prepare anyone who asks of our experience of the possible outcome. The start of the rental was good, the decent state of the units, knowledge by Jody and her husband (shop workers) was good, and the beauty of Silverton and Alpine Loop were unfortunately soured by the finality of the day for doing the right thing and trying to take care for the unit like my own personal ones. As a small business owner I would have reviewed the situation, handled it differently, and saved my "damage" fees for real circumstances and those who are careless. I am hoping the owner Erick Loyer will hopefully see this review and consider a follow up. I will update if so. read more

Me and a couple of my friends rented a 2018 Polaris RZR 1000 XP4 for a full day. Our experience with Rock Pirates was AMAZING!!!!! The Polaris RZR 1000 XP4 performed amazingly and we saw some of the most beautiful scenery and wildlife (bull moose, deer, big horn sheep) in the world. Riding the Alpine Loop in a RZR is a must do, bucket list item. Rock Pirates will take care of you with amazing side by sides, GPS, and unbelievable customer service!!!!! My friends are going to purchase a Polaris RZR because of the experience they had. Again, this is a bucket list experience, when we come back we will do it again!!!!! I can't say enough about Rock Pirates it was raining and they told us where to get gloves and ponchos, the weather cleared up but even in the rain it was AMAZING and so were Rock Pirates AAAAAA+++++++++!!!!!! read more

We just ran across a family on Engineer Pass who had been there for 4 HOURS!!!!! They sent their GPS SOS message to the office when their UTV first broke down and 4 HOURS LATER THEY WERE STILL STRANDED!!! That is NOT acceptable for a reliable company. read more
