Fantastic experience! My mom and I were hopeful to see some wildlife and some more backcountry views of the San Juan. The owner was fabulous (and her little dog Chubs). Our jeep driver for the sunset tour was Brady and it was such a great time! He was very knowledgeable and just super relaxed and set the whole mood. He has a keen eye for wildlife such as marmots, rabbits and deer. Unfortunately we didn't see moose or bear, but we learned a lot and I really enjoyed all the knowledge and wisdom Brady shared with us. I could've been out there all day/night. I rented an ATV from them and what a great experience! The check-in process was very smooth and I was pleasantly surprised when I got to my machine and found that it was in good mechanical condition. I am a guide at an ATV tours and rental operation in another part of the state, and I know how difficult it is to keep the equipment in good running order, as some riders do not take good care of their machines. Listen to the lady at the office, you definitely will not want to exceed the speed limits. Once you are on the four-wheel-drive roads, they are so rough that the 15 mph speed limit is appropriate. Again, I was very pleased with my experience and would definitely want to rent from San Juan backcountry the next time I'm in Silverton. read more

Had a seamless experience renting a jeep here. Nothing extreme just a trip to animas forks. Jeep performance was excellent. Would definitely rent from SJB again. Thought it a bit odd about the washing before returning, but that explains why it wasn't real clean inside or out when we picked up jeep. We have rented from San Juan for many years and have been very happy with the quality of their jeeps. That being said, last year and this year they have called the day before our reservation to cancel. We plan our trips around Jeep trails so to have them call the day before to cancel definitely puts a kink in travel/vacation plans. We had an AWSOME 4 hour tour. Up and over California Pass ( 12960 feet", Animas Forks Ghost Town. Had our lunch in the ghost town and then back to Silverton. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! We were a group of six that decided to rent ATVs. Not only did they charge $200.00 a day for an ATV but they told use we had to wash the vehicles upon returning them or else we would be charged a fee. When we did return them, one of the vehicles had some minor scratches and scuffs on the plastic fenders and luggage rack, normal wear and tear for rugged off road trail riding. We were then informed that if we didn't pay them $1000.00 CASH for the damage they were going to call the local sheriff (their friend) and have us arrested!!! This was extortion and we felt we had better pay or we may end up staying courtesy of the sheriff. The nail in the coffin was when they tried to charge my credit card $500.00. Thankfully I caught that and had the charge removed. read more

We opted for a guided trip to Animas Forks and really enjoyed it with our 3 kids age 12-18. Ty was our guide and did a great job getting us up to the abandoned mine And back safely. We made reservations on their website for the Durango Express rafting trip for June 12, 2022. We booked it on May 17, 2022. The website offered the event, accepted payment and emailed a confirmation. Today I received an email that my booking was cancelled. I called them to see why. They said they aren't offering rafting trips this year. However, I was still able as of today to go to the website and book the same damn trip! The website even says "Clean, Safe, and Open for Summer of 2022. But their excuse was their website hasn't been updated. Pretty disappointing to book a trip, plan your vacation around that paid event only to have it cancelled with no explanation. I would not recommend this company and wouldn't expect any customer service. read more

STAY AWAY! Believe all the bad reviews. At the end of July we reserved a 4 seater and a 2 seater. The 2 seater we reserved online, and the day before we were to go we were informed they didn't have it available. We got the 4 seater and was told by Larry we would get a full refund on the 2 seater. After our vacation it took me 9 days and multiple phone calls to get a refund. Jessica lied many times to me and also hung up on me. Larry also lied constantly and we never got our full refund. He withheld the insurance payment and fee we paid online for a machine he could not provide. He even belittled me and called me names multiple times on the phone. I have been a customer of San Juan Backcountry for years. I am sorry to say that this company has become horrible to do business with. I tried to rent a machine this past October. I needed to ask a few questions so I emailed the company. I didn't hear back, so I called and left a message. I didn't hear back. I called again and finally got Jessica, one of the owners. I was able to get my questions answered so I could book a reservation. I ended up having to cancel that reservation due to inclement weather. San Juan Backcountry charges a 10% cancellation fee, which is understandable. What I don't understand is that I was charged 15% for my cancellation fee. Over the past two months I have tried to contact Jessica, at San Juan Backcountry, to get the overcharged amount returned to me. I have sent two emails and left two detailed voicemails over those 8 weeks, allowing ample time for a response. No one has returned my messages. It appears San Juan Backcountry is not concerned about overcharging their customers. Beware of this company. There are other options for adventure rentals in the area and I encourage you to look elsewhere. read more

We brought our ATVs, but had one go down, so we decided to rent an ATV just for the day. The gals were really nice and the price was fair for last minute. My hubby rode the Suzuki king quad we rented... the ATV ran okay and we were able to enjoy the day, the only problem we had were the tires were really worn which caused my hubby to skid a few times... a little scary, I'm happy my hubby Knows how to ride. read more

Y'all stay away from this spot. The business is lacking professionalism and I wasn't confident that their vehicles were inspected regularly. Also, this goes for anything you rent, but take a picture of the vehicle beforehand. I read another review that said they were blamed for a scratch they didn't cause. If you're a first time ATV rider, don't let this be your first place. I wish I read ALL the reviews more in depth before choosing this spot. Go to Rock Pirate's or Red mountain instead! This place has terrible customer service, demands Jeep be washed when it is only slightly dirty and the contract doesn't mention any such requirement. They don't even tell you where you can wash it. A tiny side road one stall car wash that I had to ask three times to get directions too. Apparently all out of towners are expected to know about it. And! We had to vacuum the Jeep first thing when we got it because the back seats were full of sand. Topper is the tires are in terrible shape too. Definitely a mistake to rent here. read more

Got 30 mins out and the check engine light came on. Then noticed that it said the ATV almost out of gas. Turned around leaving the group went back to town and was told "those lights haven't been working all week, your ATV is fine. A normal person would have looked in the tank to see if there was gas....." And I asked why I wasn't told about the lights not working before I left. "You should have asked." was the response. Ask yourself, do you want an ATV which has broken indicator lights when you head out of range for your phone? And would you have continued up the road if the check engine light came on? Company cancelled at the last minute (day before after 3:00 pm). This tour was the only reason we spent the night in Silverton.

We were a group of 7 travelling to Durango from AZ/CA. We booked 2 UTVs( 4seaters) for a Full day guided tour. A week before the trip, the owner of the house where we were supposed to stay called us and informed about the wildfire and told us that area was being evacuated. I emailed San Juan backcountry a week before our trip to cancel the trip as the fire was still not under control. They ended up charging me 10% cancellation charges.As per their email - "there's little smoke here and there". Now I understand that as their policy- they ride rain or shine, but how do you justify the cancellation charges when the whole forest is closed due to wildfires. Upon mentioning this their reply was "If you come from other side of mountain, there are no fires" and this was 7 days before our trip while the fire was still growing(and the whole San Juan Forest still closed) In contrast, the place where we were staying, the owner was courteous enough to refund the complete reservation amount. This just shows the lack of decent customer service. I chose them based on their reviews and I understand that the experience (had we been able to do it) might have been good, but I would not recommend making a reservation with this company. read more
