Honestly, most of the questions that were being asked are basic biology questions that I would hope someone working with animals would know. That was disappointing. You cannot take videos at this facility and I can only assume it's because they do not want evidence of the animals behavior (or lack there of) being seen. The gift shop is one of the worst I've seen in a park like this. Everything is 5x the purchase price of any online retailer. I understand the money comes back to the animals so there is an up charge, but $70 for two stuffed animals and a magnet is crazy.

The zoo is designed based on country and animals found In that geographical region. Many of the stations have QR codes you can scan to learn more about the animals in question. The animals all appear to have clean areas with fresh water. You will often see employees cleaning the areas. Today, we participated in the feeding of George, a resident giraffe. It was such an incredible experience. They do charge a fee for feeding the animals, but it is minimal and just another way to help support this incredible zoo. I would recommend going early, around 9:30, to beat the heat and crowds. Some of the concession stands may not be open that early, but who needs ice cream at 9AM? If you go later, they have misting stations located throughout the zoo to help you stay cool. They also have a petting zoo with a small train. I haven't participate in this yet, but it is available. There is also a carousel you can ride. As for parking, they have alot of spots and the lots are relatively close. Overall, I think this is a great activity to do if you are traveling through Chattanooga or even if you are a local. If you live here, I would recommend getting a membership so you can go as often as you want.

Once we were inside it was $4 to feed a giraffe, $3 to ride the carousel, $5 to ride the train, $12 for a kids meal lunch so things add up pretty fast! But if you are a large family I would definitely pack a lunch there's plenty of picnic spots. It's a lovely place to walk around for a couple hours on a not so humid day. I highly recommend purchasing your tickets online in advance because you will save time and money that way. I believe it is more expensive if you buy tickets at the front booths. They have plenty of fun family activities to do: gem mining, barrel rides, slides, kids playground areas etc. This is definitely a great spot to bring your kids for some fun in the outdoors! I love their Cedar Glade Trail was a nice little walk for our family and we got to see all the adorable animals! They had Racoons, emu's, goats, capybaras, prairie dogs and red foxes! They also have a bunch more animals towards the front for guests to see. We loved the peacocks. The aviary is a nice spot for guests to walk around and feed the birds. They also had an area with a couple bunnies for guests to pet. There's plenty of other animals they have but it would much to long to mention them all! Almost all of the animals looked happy and had a very spacious habitat to enjoy. Well worth the $16 entrance fee! We will be back for future events!

The residents of Decatur, Alabama are fortunate enough to have Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in their community. If you find yourself living in or visiting the area, I would definitely recommend a visit to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. I will give Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge five stars overall. All park attendants were efficient, kind, informed, and organized. There are two enclosures for bird watching, one is heated and the other is not. The heated one is a two-story structure with bleacher-styled seating and fully glassed walls which offer a really nice view. This building also has floor-mounted binoculars. All of the pathways were wide and comfortable. They are remodeling the visitor's center which partially reopened in March 2023. They are adding new interpretive exhibits which should be cool to see! I'm really happy we have this refuge that manages and protects habitat for 12 federally endangered or threatened species. It's definitely worth the short drive to Decatur to visit!

One thing I will say is the ground was pretty muddy on the day we went - I wish I wore rain boots. That thick red clay mud is tough to wash off so I would keep that in mind! Also I saw several people with dogs - and that's really cool and good to know for future trips! The day we went they had several food trucks out there too.
