Located right by the Ohio river, Madison is a beaming community. Their main street stretches pretty far, and many of their residents live right on there. A lot of pedestrians, and easy walking access to most businesses. You could consider it a college town being close to Hanover, but you'll find folks of all age ranges here. In the summertime, you can head down to the river and hop on a boat for a joyride. Only about an hour from Louisville, and a cleaner-looking side of the Ohio River, this town sure has a lot going for it.

Sometimes, you just stumble into the coolest places. Eleutherian College, founded as Eleutherian Institute, was founded by local anti-slavery Baptists in Lancaster, Indiana (about 10 miles north of Madison). The school began instruction as a secondary school on Nov. 27, 1848 and was known for admitting students without regard to ethnicity or gender - this included freed and fugitive slaves. In 1854, it was renamed Eleutherian College because it began offering college-level coursework. It closed in 1874 and the main building became a private school and then a public high school. It is now operated by a non-profit organization. Eleutherian was the second college in the U.S. west of the Allegheny Mountains and the first in Indiana to provide education to students of different races. The three-story stone chapel and classroom building was built between 1853-1856 and currently serves as a museum for local history. In 1993, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and became a National Historic Landmark in 1997. In the decade before the Civil War, African-American students comprised 1/4 to 1/3 of total enrollment. At one point, enrollment reached 150 students. Interestingly, no Black students were enrolled past 1861. During the Civil War, the grounds were used for military training. The main building was used for meetings/concerts. You can actually tour inside and work continues in terms of renovation. The Lancaster area during this time was known for its anti-slavery sentiment. While I know Eleutherian has had some renovation done, my und Noteworthy graduates include Moses Broyles, who became pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Indianapolis and an organizer of the Indiana Association of Black Baptists Churches in 1858. Broyles was a slave from Kentucky who purchased his freedom as an adult. Notable female students included Sarah B. Hoyt, who also studied at Oberlin College. She became a teacher and later served as a high school principal at Newport, Kentucky. Also, Rebecca J. Thompson, who completed studies at the Young Ladies Institute, which later became Shepardson College in Granville, Ohio, was chair of the mathematics department at Franklin College (Indiana) for thirty-eight years. She retired from Franklin College in 1910. It's worth noting that as a historic building accessibility is limited. It's likely possible to get to the first floor (some assistance may be needed). For the exterior, the main building was constructed in the Greek Revival style. The three-story building has a rectangular plan that includes a square bell tower (belfry) centered above a gable-fronted main entrance. The gable roof includes a triangular-shaped wood pediment above the third-floor windows. The building's windowsills, lintels, and corner quoins are finished limestone, which contrasts to the rough-hewn stone walls. The north (front) facade of the building has three bays wide with two wooden doors flanking a single, ground-floor window. East and west facades are identical, with four double-height windows below four more on the third level. The south (rear) facade has two windows at the third-floor level. In terms of interior, the main building has a small entryway leading to a two-story chapel that runs the length of the building. The chapel includes double-height windows and a balcony, which crosses the north side of the room. The chapel ceiling is covered in wood panels. Stairs at each end of the entry hall lead to the upper floors. The second story includes two classrooms above the entryway and five additional rooms on the third floor. Stairs in one of the third-floor rooms leads to an unfinished attic. A ladder in the attic leads to the belfry tower. The cast bell was manufactured by J.A. Kelley of Franklin Brass Bell Factory, Madison, Indiana. This is a pretty significant part of Black history in Southern Indiana leading up to the Civil War. We enjoyed the relaxing and informative cruise on the Kentucky River. Daryl, our tour guide, shared…read moreinteresting stories about the River, Kentucky history and bourbon making. He was friendly, engaging and humorous. The round trip ride lasted about 90 minutes. The boat was very nice with bench seating and the ride was smooth. We sat upstairs in the open air to enjoy to scenery. A bar tender will take drink orders and deliver beverages to your seats. Drink prices are reasonable. Drinks can also be ordered and purchased on line. (I think snacks were also available). We booked our cruise several months in advance with tour and tasting tickets at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Two members of our party backed out and we were able to cancel their reservations (thankfully) the week before and get a refund. We started with our visit to Buffalo Trace. We arrived about an hour early so we could shop at the distillery and we were glad we did because we did not have time to shop after the tasting and getting to the boat. The tight timeline between the tasting and the boat departure was the only downside to the trip. I recommend the cruise, but plan on going at least an hour early to the distillery to shop.

The weather was enjoyable in late September and the shaded top deck had 360° views. The crew were friendly and attentive, the boat clean and in good shape. There is a drink menu available online, the prices were reasonable and the selection extensive. Nathan was our guide and we recommend them. They were knowledgeable and got a few laughs out of us. The sites seen along the way were lovely and some only accessible by boat. Passing under the bridges and by nature was made more fun knowing their history, we also saw the effects of the recent flood. We didn't see the distillery, but that might have been a different tour, different season or a result of the flood, but we got to see the singing bridge, which we were told would be deconstructed in time. We had a great time aboard the Kentucky River Boat and would return. Be sure to tip your tour guide as ours added to the experience!

I tried booking online thru Eventbrite but all tours that weekend were fully booked. I decided to give it a shot and called them. They were able to squeeze us in the first tour of the evening which was 9:00p. We arrived 15 mins early as instructed and made our way inside the gothic building. As many other curious visitors of Waverly Hills we were in search of history, architecture and the paranormal. There was a sign posted inside as we were registering: "This establishment is reported to be Haunted. Management is NOT responsible and cannot be held liable for any actions of any Ghosts/Spirits on these premises." www.theRealWaverlyHIlls.com Background: Waverly Hills Sanatorium was a former tuberculosis hospital in Louisville KY. TB was widespread in the area, resulting in a waiting list to stay at the sanatorium. Despite its name, Waverly Hills was not a mental hospital; a sanatorium is any institution that provides treatment and convalescence for chronic illnesses. Our tour guide was a member of the Historical Society. The experience included a guided tour where we were lead, at least partially, across all 5 floors and we also had the chance to look down the body chute. Waverly Hills has a reputation as one of the most haunted places in America and has been featured on ghost hunting shows as "Ghost Hunters," "Ghost Adventures," "Paranormal Lockdown," and "Buzzfeed Unsolved." There were some 30 of us in the tour... the historical stories shared with us were interesting and cool but I did not feel any of the following: full grabs, see shadows, apparitions, or shadow people, feel permanent residents walking up to people, taps, temp changes-cold spots, or hotspots, heard screams, footsteps nor door slamming. Too many people on our tour but I can't complain because we were just lucky to get in as extras. Just from my experience alone, I can tell the employees here really love working here as tour guides. They care for the building, it's history, and it's past patients. The staff are very informative on the history and building and love to share what they know when asked! A lovely experience and was a longer tour than expected for being a mini-tour. The haunted house had a decent amount of scare actors and the overall decoration and atmosphere were great. They provide food and drinks for purchase after, as well as a small gift shop. Notice: Bathrooms are accessible AFTER the haunted house. Until you reach the exit, there are port-a-potties available before you enter the building.

If you have kiddos...their kid's cruise is a lot of fun!…read more It's a great 90 minute ride down the Ohio River. There were a few day camp groups but the boat is big! We pre-ordered a charcuterie plate which did its trick for a snack on board. The crew was great and nice! They have a cute kids booklet with color pencils and includes a scavenger hunt! Plus they had learning stations and great kids music playing. Best part they lend out headphones for a silent disco for most of the cruise which was great for all ages! And a dance party at the end for the kids before they arrive at port. Plenty of space and bathrooms, and a nice cruise for the family down the river!
