The piece is by Harold "Skip" Van Houten, a Danbury, Connecticut, native who taught for 24 years at the University of Southern Mississippi and founded that school's sculpture program. It is one of three on the University campus. Flat Rocks Roll is a metal framework that holds dry-stacked stones in the form of a wheel. It is definitely unlike anything I have ever seen before, an innovative and creative installation. The iron and rock evoke a feeling of movement and openness. I enjoyed it. The artwork was created in 1988 and installed in 2015. It is a gift of John and Patricia Bain Bachner to the University. There are two others by this artist on campus. That's the house you see. Now they do have an outline of the foundation of the house that was once here. So, there is that. Then the new(er) house is full of exhibits on Monroe. Honestly, I am glad I went but if you are pressed for time, it's one you can skip.

I wish I could do a page for each and everyone, but that would be a full time job. You will find concentrations of them in an area by the canal and near the downtown restaurants. I wish I could pick a favorite or two, but they are also so good. I recommend spending a half day to a day on a public art tour. The downtown area is rich with art and I believe that you will throughly enjoy it.

Good set up with a stage, lots of space for booths, indoor restrooms, grass areas, picnic tables, and even swinging benches in a gazebo. Tons of modern art installations to ponder. The location is a decent drive from home but totally worth it as "veg fests" near us have tended to be vegetarian which, no thanks. If this is an annual event, it's definitely going to be a tradition for me and my family . First time out here makes me excited for more C-Ville VEGAN FESTIVALS to come.

No excuses for missing this beautiful bridge that is not even one mile off the Interstate…read more Constructed of hand-hewn timber in 1835 for the James River Kanawha Turnpike Corporation. The bridge remained in active public use until 1929. In 1953, the bridge was reconditioned and the land purchased for this lovely park. Portable toilets, picnic benches and lighting. Not sure who's responsible for maintenance but trash on the ground from disrespectful people but also the grills are so old, they've rusted apart. One is hanging off its post. Made with aluminum and painted a bright red, it's hard to miss at 18 feet high, 22 feet deep and 23 feet wide. It was installed in 1973. Shout out to Scott, our guide for the 830am tour. We had such a wonderful time. Highly recommend to…read moredo the guided tour. It's about 60 mins. Only 1 tour per day starting at 830am. The temperature of 54°F (12°C) year-round. I brought a light jacket. We walked thru the paved loop. Scott talked about history and the discovery of the carven. He pointed out many different shapes of limestones around us. He also mentioned lots about minerals, Stalactites, Stalagmites etc. I enjoyed his jokes and he definitely made the early tour worth it. With the ticket, you can also visit Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village, and Toy Town Junction. The cafe sells some snacks and chocolate. All the staff were very nice and friendly. Bathroom is clean. You can stay there as long as you want. visit all the museum and the carven . No time limit. Big parking lot in the front. Very convenient. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

We have been to VA before and went to other smaller caverns and had a good time. We decided to take…read morethe family here as it is much bigger. Overall, I'd tell people to save some money and go to a smaller local cavern honestly. Around $90 for the 4 of us, and that included a Giant card discount. The caverns are quite large and beautiful as to be expected. Other tours we have been on had a person walk you through and talk to you about everything, not this one. It was a free for all, people pushing through, kids running wild, quite unenjoyable. There were staff members in some areas, they were kids (16yr~olds). You could ask them questions but you got the kind of answer expected from a teenager. There were 2 teens working by the organ. They were talking to each other very loudly, extremely distracting and they offered no information about the organ when asked. Even though these caverns are larger than previous ones we visited, we ended up going through them much faster just because of how people were pushing through you. The experience was not worth $100.
