Luray Cavern is one of the largest cave system in Eastern USA, spreading over 64 acres. The cave maintains a year round temperature of 54F (12C) and has a 97% clean air quality. It gets chili on hottest of summer days, so a light jacket is recommended to bring along. The main pathway is about 1.5 miles long, 160 feet deep at the lowest point, takes about an hour to walk and explore the whole place. It is one of the most popular tourist destination in Virginia. We bought tickets for the 8:30am guided tour on July 4th. There's only one guided session offered each day. We were glad do pick the tour because 1. we got the cave before it got super crowded and 2. Scott was a fantastic tour guide, throwing historical notes, facts and bunch of dad jokes for the 2 hour long session. The cavern itself was so stunning to explore. I had never seen a cave so closely before. The rocks and the formations really displayed the crazy workings of Mother Earth. Whole place had wonder ambient lighting, highlighting the best parts of the cave. The pathway was smooth and had guard rails in steep places. After we were done with the cavern, we went to the other museum in the area that were included with our ticket. The gift shop was also huge, full of amazing merchandise. We bought a bunch of stuff like magnets, stickers and photo frame. The shop was giving a free Luray cavern tote bag for shopping over $100. read more

Such a cool place!! (literally, it's like 50 def down there) At first I thought the ticket price was a bit high, but once we went thru the cavern and wound our way through the labyrinth, I feel like the price matched the experience. We spent a good 2 hours working our way around, and it seemed like every turn there were new interesting formations to see. At one point I told my kids it felt like a real life gravel rock set, but sadly they don't know that reference . The car museum was a cool surprise as well with a bunch of really cool vintage cars and carafes that I was not expecting but made the visit even more worth it. Visited this natural, largest caverns in the US, on June 13, 2026. If you plan to go solo, like I did, with friends or family; headed over to Triple AAA website and purchase your tickets. By doing that you save around $6 , per ticket. The check in process is fairly easy, they scan your ticket before entering the Cavern, and at the Luray Valley Museum to keep track of attendance. For your ticket purchase, it includes the Car & Carriage Museum, Luray Caverns, Toy Town Adventure and the Luray Valley Museum. The cavern was beyond beautiful, from the history of when it was found back in 1878; to the informative brochure that tells you about the cavern and it's formation. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and if you get chilly , depending on your visit take a jacket. Well worth the visit for all. Breathtaking, unbelievable inside the cavern. Researched this place we arrived. We were really excited about seeing and hearing the organ. We were lucky that it was very busy; however, overall, it was overhyped. It was interesting, but we really were hoping for the organ to play longer than it did so that we could appreciate it. It does play every 5 minutes if you want to wait until the next play, which we did. It was made to be more of a tourist attraction with the maze and other museums rather than an appreciation of a natural wonder. read more

I have been to many Caverns in my travels and this one by far is the best I've ever seen. Some you must travel far down under ground this one you just walk into no elevators, making it nicer for people with fear of tight spaces. To begin with the parking lot is huge and they also have parking for RV's which is great. Walked into the welcome center and purchased our tickets. If you have a Giant grocery card you get a discount. Walked down a ramp into the caverns. We took so many photos. Every step you take is spectacular. Finally, we visited the display of cars and carriages. What a wonderful collection. They also have a rope park, a village and a garden maze. Fun for the whole family. read more

Luray Caverns is a great all-purpose experience whether you're on a romantic date, solo, or with the family. Having visited multiple times, it is a great experience for all. For what comes with your entry pass, the sale is a very good value. $36 for adults and $34 for seniors. $18 for children 6-12 and children under 6 are free. Included in your entry ticket is your Luray Caverns self-guided tour, which simply means you walk through the caverns at your own pace, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village, and Toy Town Junction. If you have time, there is also a garden maze nextdoor which is $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 6-12, and children 5 and under are free. I recommend purchasing tickets in advance, online, as ticket lines in person can someone be long with many tour groups. What I love about Luray Caverns is it is the largest cavern on the east coast and has an interesting history. Young boys walking in a field and noticing air coming from a sinkhole led to the discovery of the caverns in the late 1800s. There are huge chambers in the caverns, making space for large groups to gather. You'll also observe wishing pools, sparkling lakes that present an optical illusion, and original paved walkways. Seeing the stalactites and stalagmites is a wonder. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is also a must-see as it is the world's largest musical instrument in the caves. If visiting in the summer, you'll appreciate the drop in temperature as you descend the caves, making for a cool summer activity. The temperature in the caves remain consistent throughout the year. One thing to note is there are narrow ramps and walking paths throughout the caverns, so keep this in mind if visiting with guests with mobility concerns. Overall, a very good experience and one worth visiting. read more

WHY should you see Luray Caverns? Luray caverns are beautiful, true. Undeniably stunning vistas. But why here specifically? Apart from the fact that to come to this exhibit, there is a lot to do in the small town of Luray and its surrounding areas. In a smart move, some smaller museums have been established right along the same walkway as the entrance to Luray Caverns - museums you might otherwise never go out of your way to see, but still enjoy. A short drive from Luray is Shenandoah National Park. At the end of the day, appreciating the beauty of the caverns themselves is AN EXISTENTIAL EXERCISE. When you look at the hundreds (probably thousands, really) of stalagmites and stalactites and realize that each cubic inch takes a century to form, when you realize it took millions of years to form, you can't help but feel the awe of standing in this place that existed before people, that was forming when dinosaurs still walked the Earth. That alone makes it worth it. I liked the SELF-GUIDED TOUR. My family likes to take our time with such things, and we got to slow down and appreciate each notable spot and not feel like others were waiting for us. Conversely, there were groups that moved through rather quickly. A little pamphlet with numbers gives a little info on each spot. My personal favorites were the DREAM LAKE and the STALAGPIPE ORGAN. The Dream Lake really does feel otherworldly, surreal. With no more than 18 inches of water, it reflects a mirror world of deep chasms and at times you feel like you could fall in. The Stalagpipe organ is an amazing feat of engineering with an ethereal, almost haunting sound. They play a few tones on it periodically. No wonder some people choose to get married in that big hall where it is located. Indeed, a wedding party gathered outside as we were leaving. There are RAMPS and SLOPING PATHS, but I would not call the caverns ADA-compliant by any stretch. Child #3 rolled along in his stroller and most of the time this was fine, but at least once I had to really push at a steep angle to get him up to another level. It would be difficult for some folks in wheelchairs, depending on arm strength or motor. This goes without saying, but the caverns are a consistent temperature and humidity. Pleasantly cool; having a light sweater or jacket isn't a bad idea. And it is that way year-round, so you don't have to worry about the weather outside! The gift shop is pretty standard with tchotchkes galore. Nothing too outrageously priced. The whole experience was a wonderful one and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciate natural beauty. read more

My first time in a cavern and was blown away at nature's hidden beauty. The tour was self guided and easily navigated. The walkways are mostly lined with rails to hold on to. Some spots get slick. I saw a few older folks have a hard time going down some of the pathways. Take Baby steps to stay safe. My photos do not do justice to in person views. This cave is a must see if you are ever in the Luray, Va., area, or anywhere within a couple of hours drive. It is the largest cavern on the east coast and is just truly gorgeous. It's an easy walk all through the cave on a fairly even path that lets you behold beautiful stalactites and stalagmites in their true element. There are lakes of water in the cave that offer beautiful reflections. The temperature stays an even 54 degrees as you wind through the attraction taking in some unique and unbelievably pretty formations. There's also the world's largest natural musical instrument -- a stalacpipe organ -- that self plays some great tunes. This was truly an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. read more

First time visiting this magical place. It's a cool experience with lots of history behind the caverns starting from a sink hole. The layout of the cavern is easy to follow on a self guided tour and there are many staff members positioned along the way to answer questions. Many were so helpful and informative. There are railings everywhere to help and many parts have a good incline. The path inside is basically paved and well maintained which I appreciated. Cross another experience off the bucketlist! I have been wanting to visit Luray Caverns for a long time. When I read that they were finally fully wheelchair accessible, I started to actually put some thought and planning into going. Friends of ours have a 7 year old son, who is homeschooled, so I invited them along so the kid could have a proper summer vacation adventure. I also invited a bunch of other friends, but only two others came. I feel like the others really missed out. Not only was in affordable but it was MAGICAL. I'd seen pictures, but that didn't stop me from being utterly awestruck at every corner. I must have whispered "wow" 3 dozen times. Words cannot do the caverns justice. You really should go and see them for yourself. I had, at one point, done some research about possibly getting married in the cavern. It's something like $2k for up to 10 guests (though I could be wrong. It's easy to contact them yourself through their website). It took over an hour to make it through the cavern. Theres a bottleneck at the wishing well that had people blaming "the person in the wheelchair" which i did not appreciate. Several of my traveling companions put those people in their place. I have such great friends. The much lauded organ was a HUGE disappointment. You could barely hear the music, which was fine with me since it played a church hymn (How Great Thou Are)... personally I was hoping for some Phantom of the Opera, but alas... We had a spectacular time and now I've started researching the other caverns in the area. I need more stalagmites and fodder for whimsical stories about the Grinch. read more

Thankfully there was an amazing tour guide, Trevor, available to answer our many questions. He taught us a ton about the history of the caverns! Such an amazing experience! A little bit pricey unless you can score a discount (from hotel or other vendor). The caverns are seen through a self-guided tour which nicely is totally accessible for most people. Lots of ramps and inclines but no stairs. Bring a jacket since it's always a cool mid-50's in the cave. Definitely one of the premiere caves in the US. Expect to spend 45 to 90 minutes walking through the cave. Your admission ticket also includes a nice antique auto museum, a small local area history museum & a toy museum (closed during our visit). If all museums were open, the price of the ticket is almost worthwhile. read more

Very cool experience! I went years ago with my kids, but my husband missed the trip. So, we went together on the way back from the Boardwalks of WV. Since it's been about 20 years since I went, a lot of it was like seeing it for the first time. We both enjoyed the reflection pool and the organ at the bottom of the cavern. Although the map was helpful, I kind of missed having a tour guide take us around. A lot more informative since you have someone to ask and answer questions you may have. The staff that were there were all very helpful and friendly when approached. Nature is so cool whether above or below the ground! This cave system is massive. The tour is self guided. The parking lot is huge and has a gas station. This place has become a bit of a tourist trap - but it's massive and even when busy can handle the crowd. Has a cafe and a huge gift shop. You will be in awe of the sheer size of the cave. This place will be busy. Also under construction. Daughter also tried the rope course and had fun. Spent a couple hours here. Worth the visit. If you want a more quaint cavern try skyline - but if you want to see a massive cave system - check this place out. Hotels have a coupon - 1 adult get 2nd adult 50% off - that saved some cash. We stayed in Woodstock VA and visited Skyline on our way south before hitting Luray. 2 caves compliment each other well. We also visited Shenandoah afterwards. Well this place has changed a bit since the last time I visited. They have a really nice new entrance to the caverns that is more accessible for visitors with mobility issues. They upgraded the walkways throughout the cavern. This place is still amazing. I recommend coming early, so you can experience the quiet majestic nature of this place. It's cool in caverns, so you may need a jacket or long sleeves. The self guided tour can be done in an hour or two. Included with your ticket is the Car Museum & the Old Toy museum. They have a cafe and fudge shop. Naturally, all tours end in the gift shop. Enjoy your visit to the largest caverns in the east. read more

Wow, wow, wow! You should definitely visit this place. A friend and I drove out last weekend (about a 2 hour drive from Short Pump), through the picturesque Shenandoah Valley to visit the caverns. It was not that crowded around 11:30am when we arrived (the longest line was waiting to use the restroom!), so we bought our tickets and walked down the path to the caverns entrance. Upon entering the caverns, you feel almost like you're on another planet. Around every turn, there is something more exciting to see. The caverns are huge (it took about an hour to walk through them), and there are spots where you feel very small. I was totally amazed at the variety of shapes, patterns, colors, and sizes of the stalactites and stalagmites. There were a few areas with pools of water that were so flat that the reflections created amazing views. I was absolutely amazed by what I saw and my friend and really enjoyed our visit. I would highly recommend visiting, it's well worth the drive. read more

The Luray Caverns are a must see! I am so glad we ended up going here. Awhile back my boyfriend and I went to Shenandoah National Park and we had wanted to go to Luray the same day. We ended up spending 8 hours in the park and by the time we were done for the day, we were way too tired to go to Luray. So for our anniversary trip, we decided to do an overnight in Harrisonburg and check out the Caverns finally! I am so glad we did. Wow! These are breathtaking. Genuinely breathtaking. It is almost unbelievable that these are real and exist because truly it doesn't feel real. Everything is just gorgeous. I also appreciated how it was easy to navigate and we went when it was less busy so we could take our time and really enjoy the beauty of the caverns. The gift shop was nice, the pricing on the tickets isn't too bad, and they even have a cafe (though it seemed quite abysmal). Ultimately I had a wonderful time and we stayed for about two hours! read more

We visited Luray Caverns on August 16, 2025, about 20 minutes from I-81. The drive there was scenic and wound up and down into a rural part of the Shenandoah valley.Our self-guided walking tour took just under an hour. We were stunned by the otherworldly formations. By chance, we visited on the annual candle-lighting weekend commemorating its discovery on August 13, 1878. A friendly staff member noted the tradition occurs the weekend after the anniversary and includes 9 p.m. fireworks. read more

Great place to visit if you're in Luray or the nearby area. There was no line to get in on a Thursday morning and there's a large parking lot out front with free parking. There were three giant buses full of children when we arrived, so I assume they do a lot of school tours. The attractions are accessible, they have a ramp to get in. There are bathrooms, a cafe, outdoor seating, a maze and some sort of climbing attraction in the complex. Tickets are $34 per adult, less for children and seniors to enter the caverns, which includes entry to the car and toy museums (quick walkthroughs you can do before or after the caverns.) The caverns themselves are beautiful. They did a great job making them accessible to view without destroying too much of them in the process. There is no tour guide, you can scan a QR code or take a pamphlet to read about what you're seeing as you go through. One star removed because $68 for two adults is pretty steep without a guided tour. $20 per person seems a bit more reasonable. It was $9 to do the maze, which was cute but definitely geared towards (and full of) children. Not worth it in my opinion. The car museum is really cool though, highly worthwhile to check out. read more

The merch was a really large selection, including some relatively inexpensive items, like stickers and a book about the history of the caverns. The ticket takers all looked like they hate their job. Not friendly at all! Found it weird for as many people that the place holds there are only three ladies restroom stalls. Caverns are very slippery so you definitely need to be in tennis shoes with a grippy bottom. It's about a mile underground and very hilly. So much better than I expected! We were lucky to be in the cave when it was almost empty, and it was an incredible experience. The paths are easy with no tight squeezes or steep ascents/descents, so unlike many other cavern tours I've done, Luray should be accessible for people of all mobility levels. The tickets are not cheap ($90 for two adults and a kid), but the admission price also includes admission to the toy museum (a tad underwhelming), the car museum (not huge but very cool), and the historic museums and buildings across the street. During our 3 hours in the cave we bumped into Courtney a few times . Every single time we kept being amazed by her and her knowledge of the caves . Screams Tourist trap! My husband and I and two older kiddos decided to come here and compare Luray Caverns and Shenandoah Caverns that we went to the day prior. We walked in after tackling the parking lot. We bought tickets pretty fast, but it was already very busy and sensory overload. We went to the left and walk out the back door after squeezing through the gift shop just to get to the exit to go down the long path to the cavern entrance. Once in, they take your photo with a green screen and then we proceed inside. Once there we were giving a quick briefing and we were on our way. That's it. No tour guide explaining things from there. You have the paper/map to do that. But, once in it was so crowded. Everyone stopping for photos ect. We bypassed and went further in to avoid the mass. Inside I felt like we were looking at the same thing, over and over again. All while trying to navigate the masses. It was exhausting and not enjoyable. There was garbage here and there. Garbage cans overflowing and that was at like 1pm. read more

This cavern was absolutely gorgeous and I would highly recommend it. This is a 5-star location. However, there wasn't much of an opportunity to learn about the things you were seeing. I met one employee at the organ pipe and was so delighted to hear her description of several items and history of the cave. That was very exciting to get more of the inside scoop of this beautiful natural wonder. I would definitely see if there is some literature about this cavern to read prior to your trip, to help you better understand what you are viewing. The visit is a self tour, so you can go at your own pace. However, I would still try and go on a day when there is less traffic as some of the beautiful areas can become quite impacted with people. This was an incredibly large cavern and I was pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness, especially considering the amount of people visiting and that Luray Caverns offers the organ pipe area as a venue for weddings and parties.
