This crab guards the entrance of the Rockport Beach, one of the finest beaches in Texas. Rockport is known for its seafood that they catch here. The blue crab is one of them! Rockport previously had another crab statue that was on top of a seafood restaurant. It lived there from the 1950's to about the 1970's when it fell into disrepair due to hurricane damage. However, in 2012, artist David Allgood unveiled a bigger better crab. Rockport is really into the arts, and this is a great example! It's across the street from a sculpture garden, and compliments the area nicely! Don't worry, this statue doesn't say anything about the disposition of people from Rockport, they're friendly! The funny thing about this crab is that it's a hermaphrodite. It is a male crab with female claws.

TLDR: Very old (1,000+) oak tree that has withstood a vast number of hurricanes. Quick stop, with a…read morenice walking loop around the tree. Located inside a state park and requires an entry fee ($5 pp) to access. Visually, this tree is not as beautiful as some similar senior oaks. For instance, Angel Oak in SC has that magical sprawling limb look while this tree has had many limbs trimmed. It's still amazing to know how long this tree has been around (estimated longer than Angel Oak, placed at 1,000 years at least). Even more impressive is how many hurricanes it's withstood due to its proximity to the Gulf (40-50, according to my research). This tree is located inside Goose Island State Park and thus, requires you to pay the entrance fee to access. $5 per adult; kids 12 and under are free. So you can either cough up the money to see the tree and leave or you can try to find other activities in the park. Personally, I didn't really find anything else for our family to do there that was superior to other activities in the area. There's a fishing pier but it seemed narrow and crowded with fishermen. If you fish or hike, you might find more stuff to do but we came here with toddlers so there wasn't much else for us. This is a nice quick stop. You can do a short walking loop around the tree -- it's very child-friendly. My kids enjoyed running around the tree. There are benches to sit, if desired. I found the poem on the sign a bit comical -- it was solemn and reverent and then at the end, you discovered that it was just an appeal for a donation. Ha. Well done, tree.

However, I can't give 5 stars to an entity that grabs up taxes based on ad valorem taxes. It seems more like we Texans are merely renting property from the State, instead of ever actually owning something. The county gets to determine the value of the property, and then assesses a property tax based upon that value, as a percentage. If they say your property value has increased, they can hike your taxes without having to prove how they came up with that new value. However, if you're good- you can go argue why you shouldn't have to pay such high taxes, because they got a property valuation all wrong. They're reasonable people.

There are display cabinets with historical information, photos and artifacts. They have a children's section too. Today, they had a book sale for 25 cents, one dollar and two dollar selections. They have restrooms, a water fountain and plenty of parking. I got a library card, and used it for two DVD's to watch for a week. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Recently authorized to increase depth from 45 to 52 feet,the port is beginning to grow to handle the increase in manufacturing in the area. To accommodate the largest super tankers and increase space,a new bridge as well as docks are being constructed. This part of Texas no longer remains slow paced with wind,steel and chemical manufacturing on the increase.

For a fee, Rockport picks up your garbage, provides water, sewage and natural gas. When things go wrong, they make sure that things get fixed and working in a reasonable amount of time. When Hurricane Harvey came, they worked overtime, tirelessly, non-stop to keep the water flowing, the trash picked up, the sewage lines clear, and everything working as normal when the world was turned upside down with a hurricane. I am quite impressed by the tenacity of the utility department of Rockport- when nearly every power line in the county was down, they helped get things up and running. When the sewers were overcome with sea water and flooding, they worked nonstop to pump it clear of debris to keep things flowing. I owe my gratitude to the Aransas County Utilities District!
