This walking path is located within the Rocky Point State Park. It's a 1.6 mile loop paved path. Many people, walk, walk their dogs, skate, and ride bikes on it. There are benches along the way to rest at. I really enjoyed the beautiful views of the Narragansett Bay. There are some educational signs along the way, remnants of the old amusement park, and a fishing pier. There was ample parking when we went. There are paths to the water; I like the cute little hidden beach off the path. Overall, a great spot to take a walk and get some steps in! read more

Great little path from the parking lot through the landscape to a beautiful beach and picnic area. This place has great photo opportunities because there is plenty of green grassy areas with the beach and rocks in the background. The water was very calm and I really enjoyed walking along the shoreline to find little pieces of sea glass. I did notice that there was many little tiny bugs that bite hard when you stand still. Not a pleasant feeling but their bite left no marks and went away quickly. I saw people throwing a ball into the water for their dogs to run in and retrieve. There were also a few guys who were fishing from the rocks. Looks like a fun place to spend the day with family and friends. The parking area was plentiful and also handicapped accessible. I've lived in Rhode Island my whole life and have many amazing memories of Rocky Point Park. From the House of Horror and the Dodge-Ems to the midway games and Shore Dinner Hall. I grew up with the Kiddie Land rides, moved on to the Rock & Roll Express, the Flume & Apollo 11, then finally graduated to spending days in the park with friends waiting to see the likes of The Ramones, Quiet Riot, Pantera, Ministry or House of Pain in the Palladium. All that being said, obviously I miss the Rocky Point I knew and loved. It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago (December 2020) that I visited the remains of what once was. I was shocked and happy to see the skeleton of the Sky Liner still standing as it brought back a ton of memories. It's odd to see that it's no where near as high as I remember it being! It was also great to see the informational plaques giving the history of the salt water pool, the original baseball field and the first ever presidential phone call. All in all it's a nice, small park with plenty of Open space and some nice paths. You can stay in the grassy area or walk along the water. Lots of cool photo spots too. The parking area is huge and there are 4-5 clean port-a-Johns. I'd suggest the park for anyone, but someone to spent time at Rocky Point amusement park will enjoy it even more. My only negative is I wish there were even more information boards posted and it would be great if there were more remnants of the original rides. Thanks to the city of Warwick and who ever else was part of keeping the land the way it is. I live in Long Island NY and every Saturday I have a ritual. I grab my dog, get a cuppa coffee and walk in the woods by the Long Island Sound. When I travel, I look for similar walking paths. I read about Rocky Point Walking Path and was excited to get up early in the morning and walk the path before I hit the road. Reading about the Rocky Point Walking Path, at one time it was an abandoned amusement park. It's great they used this area and turned it into a park. And the first thing I noticed? Not a spot of litter anywhere. I'm walking the old asphalt street, following the side of the water and after about 1 1/2 miles, it ends at a locked gate. Now I could just double back and follow the same steps but I see a rough path that leads into the woods. Guess what? I'm a Ninja so I'm going to take a walk in the woods and see what's up. Walking, I'm not seeing anything floral but what I'm smelling is both floral and the salt air. This path wasn't too long, it took me out to the street. I walked to my car and my hike was over. I was a young girl when Rocky Point Amusement park was still up and running. After closing I completely forgot about the massive space that would have been left. A friend suggested a walk on a beautiful spring day last year and we ended up here. Absolutely stunning views on the water. Family and pet friendly. My pupperoni loves it here. One lap is approximately one mile, give or take. There are slight inclines and shaded areas. I drive 30 minutes for this great walking/running spot. Parking does get tricky come nicer weather but it never feels too crowded on the path. read more

A fun walking path through a historic spot that was once a lively amusement park, the Rocky Point Walking Path is a flat and easy stroll for just about any age. Rocky Point Walking Path - Hiking Near Me - Warwick, Rhode Island

Came here with my wife on a beautiful, sunny day during Labor Day Weekend, and experienced breathtaking vistas! We left the spacious path and climbed the hill to check out one of the few remnants of the former amusement park (Skyliner gondola ride), and the view of Narragansett Bay amazed us. It's the perfect spot for a picnic! Don't expect many amenities, although I did see two composting toilets (modern-day outhouses) in opposite ends of the adjacent Rocky Point Park. It's all about natural beauty here. Not far from the arch, there is a small beach that actually had bigger waves than Oakland Beach (no lifeguard, swim at your own risk). Little remains of the pier, but we saw several people fishing from the rocks. The park was also quite clean, with only one sighting of dog poop (there is a poop bag dispenser near the parking lot, but I would BYOB, since the dispenser is broken and has no bags). This isn't a bike path, so for human and canine walkers, it's a bit more relaxing being able to walk without worrying about bicyclists whizzing by you. My wife especially enjoyed the purple and yellow wildflowers. I enjoyed reading the plaques that marked locations of various buildings and rides of the former Rocky Point amusement park, which closed in the mid-1990s. That was a nice touch, but, as a history buff, it left me wanting more. From reading some of the earlier Yelp reviews, apparently, some of the structures and buildings remained, abandoned, several years after the park was closed. We did not walk to the end of the path, so I am not completely sure, but I think any remaining buildings were demolished approximately four or five years ago, based on timelines of earlier Yelp reviews. It would have been cool to see them, but I guess I'm too late for that. As mentioned earlier, very little of the original park remains: some blue-painted concrete around a filled-in outdoor swimming pool, and a few rusted supports of the Skyliner ride. Although I had been to the park as a teenager in the 1980s, I couldn't really get a sense of what rides or buildings went where on the site, because it's such a wide, open space now. I guess if I want to jog my memories, I will have to rely on old photos or documentaries. One memory I will never forget is going there with my church youth group in 1983, and buying a beer from a concession stand; I was 15 at the time. I don't know how I pulled that one off, but I did. The original Rocky Point is gone forever (the closest equivalent is Six Flags, or Lake Compounce), never to return to this site on Warwick Neck. On one hand, it's sad to lose a part of one's youth, but on the other hand, I'm grateful that this beautiful piece of land was preserved for public access, rather than developed into luxury condos. read more

Definitely worth a visit for Rhode Islanders. Great views right on the water. Good bike path for kids as it is quite level, no immediate drop offs, not too busy, and has a definite end (at the "ghost town"). Sometimes they offer special events (such as movie nights and food trucks) so look out for that! read more

A new beginning Rocky Point Amusement Park was once the largest attraction in Rocky Island and one of the most popular amusement parks in the whole country. It opened way back in the 1840's and entertained millions of people, including presidents, foreign dignitaries, famous movie stars and of course common folk. It survived devastating hurricanes in 1938 and 1954 and rebuilt better than ever but couldn't weather the storm of the changing priorities of the people and economy difficulties. It finally closed it doors and shut down it's rides for good in 1996. The cottages and great buildings decayed or were vandalized by idiots. It was fenced off and this great land right on Narragansett Bay just sat dormant and forlorn. However it was not forgotten. Because of it's prime and desirable location lots of grandiose and economically profitable ideas were thrown about. The most persistent and horrible was to built a large waterfront condo complex. That meant this great parcel of land would be forever closed to the public. Fortunately a small but determined group of individuals would not let this happen. They fought to have the town of Warwick buy the land and keep it open as a park. Politicians are frequently vilified, vituperated and denigrated, usual for good cause. However great credit has to go to Mayor Advedisian of Warwick, Governor Chaffee of the state of Rhode Island and others for getting involved and not just engaging in lots of the usual grandiloquent political verbiage but actually making it happen. The town of Warwick did indeed buy 41 acres of the land right on the water and on June 24, 2011 the park and hiking trail was officially opened. A nice ceremony and ribbon cutting, with the mayor, governor and television cameras attending, was held and the beautiful waterfront was once again open to the public. I live only a short walk from the park so I consider this my back yard but I will gladly share with others. It's just to lovely to keep for a few, everyone should have a right to come here. There still are another 81 acres from the old amusement park that is still just sitting there but people continue to fight against development and want the 81 acres to be Incorporated into the park. It just might happen. Sometimes individuals, backed by strong leadership, can indeed win out over corporations and big business. read more

The new park/path has a bit of a three part deal going on. You have the old Rocky Point Park, fenced off on one side with dilapidated buildings and rusty arches. You have the new Rocky Point path, well manicured and paved. You also have a little bit of wilderness with overgrown fields, private beaches, and rocky shores. I kinda dig the combo deal they have going on. It was the first time I had been there since the amusement park days way back when I was in middle school. I was there crack-ass early one morning. Believe me, you were probably still in bed. I walked the quarter mile from the parking lot to the shore, not really knowing what to expect. It was pretty surreal. The sun was just starting to peak over the horizon and the bay was full of fishing boats. For a while I was the only person on the path yet the water was bustling with activity. It's a fairly small park. The paved path along the water is probably good for a quick jog or a morning stroll. Any time you're walking within a few feet of the ocean you can count on the views being pretty decent. It's no Newport Cliffwalk, but it's still an ocean front stroll. The wild bits of the park are worth a little bit of exploring. There are the rocks by the shore that are just begging to be climbed on. I watched a guy fishing off of one of the further out rocks. There are also a few paths that lead off into the woods. They don't go too far, but they're worth checking out. I followed one that lead me over the rocky shore to a private beach-like setting. The beach is a bit rocky and the waters are lacking in waves so I'm not suggesting you bring a towel and stay for the day. But a quick dip while you're already there? Yeah, probably a great idea on a hot day. The fenced off bits of the park are just begging to be explored. I'm a bit old to be ignoring "no trespassing" signs and hopping fences to explore buildings that are falling down on themselves. But if you're a teenage hoodlum, you'll probably love it here. It looks like all the old Rocky Point rides have been swept away, but there are a few buildings that are still standing including the old chowdah house. I suggest you go take a look and when you do, send me some of the pics*. I liked it here. The old buildings added a bit of an eerie quality. The waterfront property gave some scenic views. The wooded paths allow you to explore and find your own slice of wilderness. Ive never been to Rocky Point in its Prime I would have loved to. This place tells a story every time I come and I'm sure it will tell it to you too if you listen very carefully. it is my favorite spot ever. Perfect place to bring a chair and a book and relax. One of the only beaches I've found that isn't littered with people. I have, and probably always will swim here but warwick is notorious for dirty water and I don't care just don't put your head in or something. I really did like walking around this spot. I only explored for about an hour, but found it to be pretty interesting. I like that there are plaques all over with photos from back in the days when this part was in operation along with some history/facts. The evening I went it was just a beautiful day to go for a walk, and I put in just over 2 miles in, while soaking up the scenery. I found the park itself to be pretty clean, and the water appeared pretty clear along the beach as well. The walking paths are paved and kept nicely. I didn't see any restrooms, or things of that nature, but I didn't take a full wander of the grounds either. I will be back soon! read more

I wasn't living in the state of RI when Rocky Point was actually up and running so I really have nothing to compare the visit I had at the walking path yesterday with. When we arrived around 2 p.m. on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, this place was packed but it was to be expected. The parking lot is small but there is plenty of street parking, just beware because it appears to be a busy road and I was afraid my little pup was going to get hit. Once you enter the park and get to the walking path, it's a big huge wide open space with great views of the bay. There are a few benches here and there to stop and rest and also informational boards every so often giving visitors tidbits of info about the area and certain remaining structures from the amusement park. Despite only having 2 trash bins at the entrance, the park was very clean. There is even a small beach area which was also clean, despite some beach glass here and there, but I'm not sure if the water is safe to swim in? I'd definitely go back to the walking path, but maybe during a weekday when it's not so congested and busy. read more

We visited Rocky Point State Park because we were in Warwick for another reason, and this was the nearest place with paths for hiking. When we got there, there was a tiny parking lot, and the old road into the now defunct amusement park, so I really had no idea what we were walking into. Wow. We hiked 2.5 miles out, without covering the same ground twice. We saw secluded beaches, ocean, waves, sea life, trees, grass, fishing, dogs, bike riding, running hiking and more. I'm a walker, so I always like to try out different paths and trails. We headed here on a recent Sunday morning. It's definitely short, I'm not sure if it is even a mile in one direction. On one side you have beautiful water views and some small, not very busy beaches. We some saw people enjoying the beaches as well as sailing and stand up paddle boarding while we were walking. The walk is paved, with not a lot of trees to shade the path itself, so it does get quite hot in the summer if there isn't a breeze off the water. The falling down park on the other side is fairly depressing. The chain link fence, burned out buildings and no trespassing signs are a turnoff. It will be interesting to see what the state does with the land now that demolition is starting. There is so much potential. I hope to visit again and be able to rate the path higher. read more

An absolute treasure and hidden gem of Rhode Island culture. My girlfriend and I love to explore, and after 2 years, we are still finding cool, new spots to spend some of our free time. We decided to look for parks near by to enjoy a late afternoon walk before making our way over to Iggy's for dinner. Don't regret making the detour. If you are looking for a new view, a great spot to kick back, go for a nice walk and catch some sea shore action, this place is spacious and a top 5 spot in Rhode Island. read more

I would have loved to have seen it in its glory days. I've heard about it during its grand opening in 2014. I ended up convincing my husband to check it out (he loves to metal detect) and I loved the view. They cleaned up the park very well judging by the photos I've seen when it was abandoned not to long ago. A very fun place to explore and then the gorgeous view of the bay itself is also worth it. I love abandoned and decaying places and seeing the skyliner pieces still in tact made me nostalgic, and I've never seen it in operation. Beautiful view and a bunch of history. I didn't grow up in Rhode Island but I did come to rocky point before it was rehabbed. They did a great job! There is a paved walking path, about a mile long. There is a small beach area, not really for swimming but for sun bathing. They transformed the old amusement park into a large grassy area. Good for a picnic, kite flying, or for kids to run around. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE this park! My boyfriend and I took our dogs for the first time this weekend and have already been back twice! What's left of the gondola ride is super cool and the wide open field makes you feel like you're practically the only ones there. There is SO much sea glass on the little side beach to collect and benches to stop and enjoy the scenery. After our first visit we looked up the history behind the park (it used to be an old amusement park from the 1840s) and loved it even more! My boyfriend and I had half of a day in Warwick to explore. We were craving some physical activity after chowing down at Iggy Doughboy's the night prior. The Rocky Point Walking Path is truly a hidden gem. We absolutely loved this little slice of Americana. Although we only saw a couple abandoned rides, there was plenty on the trail to explore. We found so much seaglass (an obsession of mine!) while hiking along the coastline. It was fun to stumble upon a really private beach not too far from the start of the trail. If we ever come back, that is where we are packing a lunch and spending the day! While not very physically demanding for us, Rocky Point provided beautiful scenery and exciting adventure. This hike was definitely a highlight of our weekend! I absolutely recommend it for anyone seeking the outdoors in Warwick. read more

I kinda hope they keep the property 'as is' the walking path is so nice and the fact that you can peek through the fence and see parts of old attractions, that is just a great feeling! While I really miss the old Rocky Point amusement park, it is nice to see that the state bought the land and are turning it into a nice park. I hope that it eventually becomes more developed and accessible (boat launches, a beach, bathrooms, and cooking areas would be nice) like Colt State Park which is right across the bay. But as of now it has some great walking paths, woods to explore, and big grassy areas to hang out and picnic. There are a few old ride remnants left to explore as well. read more

i was so excited to hear that rocky point was going to be an open space and land for everyone to enjoy. i spent the summer weekends of my youth at rocky point beach. my Maternal grandparents had a cottage there. i remember weekends spent with my cousins aunts and uncles. we had a great view of the bay, concerts and fireworks could be heard and seen from the cottage. no music was needed during the day we got all the music right from the rides of the park. chowder cakes rides and games were the best times of my youth. went up to rocky point twice since it was reopened. nice walk and nice views. was also shocked to see cottages still standing. including my grandparents cottage . they also have picnic benches. come for a walk bring a blanket and some lunch relax on the quite rocky point beach. read more

Well, today DH and I took our two boys and our dog down memory lane. Seeking some fresh air and a bit of exploration we took our first trip back to Rocky Point since it closed years ago. We were pleased to find adequate parking and a clean porta john (not the best facilities but better than nothing in a pinch!)... As porta johns go. The beach was clean, there was a dog poop bag dispenser, trash cans and picnic tables. And of course, lets not forget the view! On this first visit we opted to explore the beach, which thoroughly wore out our two young kids. We're anxious to go back for a stroll down the new path, which apeared to be nicely tarred, for all you rolleebladers out there! Suggestions - DH and I would have loved for there to have been a chowder shack on site. It would be great to be able to finish off our exploration with some authentic Rocky Point chowda and clam cakes! read more
