Tangy's Archery Lanes & Pro Shop - Entryway on second floor

Expansive space Variety of options…read moreConvenient in Warwick Tangy's offers 26 lanes of 20-yard target shooting, a 3D range with animal targets, lessons, birthday parties, adult and youth leagues, and the pro shop with all manner of gear. For reference, they're located in "St. James Plaza" across from CarMax, with a deceptively narrow ground-floor entryway (the facility is upstairs on the second floor - elevator available). The entrance is clearly marked, however. They have two sets of open hours: summer (Tues-Fri 6-9pm, Sat 1-5pm) and winter (Tues-Fri 6-10pm, and Sat/Sun 1-5pm). My family and I managed to get to Tangy's just in time for an hour's range time prior to their 5pm close time on a January Sunday. The place was not exactly full, but certainly in full swing. Several clearly-experienced people were doing target practice with a little extra space to themselves, a group of renters who looked like they were simply enjoying the occasional outing were on a set of lanes, and numerous more serious archers were getting gear adjustments or shopping for new equipment. Two people were on staff helping out, and they had their hands full. Thus, it took about ten minutes for my 4-pack to get lanes and rental equipment, but then we were set up and good to go. Our time went quickly. Range and rental time aren't exactly cheap. All first-timers are strongly encouraged to participate in a $25/person mini-training. Aside from that, adult rental of equipment is $5 for bow/arrows, and $3 for children while a lane will run $18/hour for adults and $13/hour for youth. My family has all shot before, so we were saved the training time and fees, but it was still $78 for a family of four for one hour. However, it's worth mentioning that if you plan to come regularly, many of their frequent guest programs (from 5-hour range time cards to full memberships) offer noticeable discounts. Tangy's tagline is "Where every level of archer feels at home" - to that end, my older son (11) described the experience as challenging but welcoming; my younger son (9) described it as "ultimately awesome." My wife liked that we were given some space to shoot as a family without too much oversight. So there you have it - their story checks out. I'm sure we'll be back in the near future.

We paid $20/person which includes a mini lesson on how to shoot and then about 20 min of shooting time on our own. We came not too long after the shop opened so there weren't many people in there yet. We got 2 whole lanes to ourselves. After you complete the lesson and you come back, I believe it's $18/per half hour There aren't many lanes, so if you have a group larger than 4, it might be a tight fit and might want to call ahead to make sure your and your group will have a lane. Overall it's a lot of fun! Would recommend if you just want to shoot for fun or you're a professional and need a space to practice

Thank you Henry and Virginia Lawton, from whom the property was purchased in 1990. Located on the picaresque Seven Mile Rd, there is ample parking and signage to allow for access to and guidance with the land. A large sign/kiosk at the entrance provide some general rules, a map of the area, and a bit of history about the property. The kiosk is supplemented by tiles created by local school children that depict some of the bird species that reside here. Due to conservation efforts with the 40+ species to have been documented to nest here, dog are not allowed from April to August. September to March they may visit on leash. This is therefore, a fantastic place to bird watch. The trail system is very well maintained and easy to traverse. Most of the trails extend around the perimeter of the hayfields with a brief spur through some forested canopy. Stone walls scatter the property, giving evidence to the land's farming past. Beautiful cedar and walnut trees greet you on the paths. Cranberry Brook passes through with a bridge to help you traverse it. Walk, hike, jog, birdwatch, snowshoe, cross-country ski, photograph your surroundings. I had the pleasure of enjoying clear blue skies, gentle breezes, and birdsong on my most recent visit. Wildflowers, bees, bunnies, and sunshine. Highly recommend.

But I pulled a Forest Gump and I just kept running...well walking. Started at the Station Street parking lot and finished at the end of the path/trail at the Railroad Street parking lot. Roundtrip the route is about 15 miles and took me about 4.5 hours, with a couple brief stops along the way. The trail is very well maintained and surprisingly, everyone is cogent of the rules (walkers to the left, riders to the right). You pass by a baseball field, and there is a brook running alongside the trail at various points. Also along the way is a path to Flat River Tavern, and you also pass by an ice cream shop, so there are opportunities along the way for a respite in addition the park benches. Along the way there are also plenty of good views and vibe

If you choose to head east on the Greenway you cross two pedestrian bridges. The first goes over Rt. 117, the second over the south branch of the Pawtuxet River. This second bridge is close to a Trail parking lot on Pilgrim Avenue near Laurel Ave. The Greenway is part of the Washington Secondary Trail and has been designated as the area running through Coventry, RI. Taking this eastward route, you pass by several cemeteries on either side and a conservation area on your right. It is a mostly wooded area passing by a few back yards and has a gentle slope downward. History buffs can follow the path to the east from The Paine House Museum to the General Nathaniel Greene Homestead. Just exit the path at Laurel Avenue (just after the bridge over the Pawtuxet River) and follow Taft Street, just across Laurel Ave and to your right, to the homestead. It's about 3 miles round trip. Leaving Coventry, you can continue to walk east along the path, where you will meet up with Main Street in West Warwick. Here the path turns north then east, then north, then east again as it crosses the river, goes through some very populated areas, and continues through Cranston, RI. If you decide to head west on the path from the Station Street parking lots, you cross Rt. 117 at a crosswalk near a small shop where you can stop to grab a cool drink or ice cream. This way is also wooded, and passes a number of businesses before becoming quite rural. There is a small parking lot to access the trail located behind a new business on Rt. 117 (it's on Google maps) or continue further down the trail where you can also find a parking lot near the Coventry Public Library. If you are looking for a long walk under the trees, this is probably the direction you want to travel. If you love cemeteries and a shorter stroll, heading East could be for you. In either direction, the Coventry Greenway is a very nice section of the Washington Secondary Trail to get into nature without having to walk too far if you don't want to. We often grab the bikes and get in a nice long ride headed toward CT where the trail is renamed the Trestle Trail. It abruptly ends close to the CT line, just past the Summit General Store where you can get a cold drink and a sandwich if you've been on the trail for a while and need a snack. There is a parking lot at this end of the trail as well, but we warned, if you are riding a bike, the return trip to this lot is all up hill. I prefer to start at the other end and coast back. Enjoy!
