Happy Earth Day!…read more It's the one year anniversary of our hike around this natural area. For awhile, my town was organizing group dog hikes every weekend here. Now I love to hike. I love my dog. I love to hike with my dog. However I wasn't sure how it'd all play out with me, my dog, other people, and other dogs. Too intense for me - not for him. To be clear - I am most definitely the problem lol. So me, dog, and dog dad struck out on our own last Earth Day to explore this trail. I refused to believe there was a towering water feature until I saw it for myself (not pictured below for some reason). Splendid to be honest. Super enjoyable way to spend some time thinking about our planet and discovering more gems in Franklin Township. Things to know: -ticks - pulled 7 off my dog and a couple out my underboob smh -passes behind residential housing. Kinda creepy from homeowner perspective I imagine but cool for walkers because someone along the way has an absolute UNIT of a treehouse and I am 43yo and very jealous. -ticks -watch the trail markers. I don't think you can get lost per se but can def veer off course. -other people and dogs. The trail in the woods can get tight so stay aware and give a wide berth if necessary -ticks

I have been humoring my wife by taking walks with her most every day. She started looking for new…read moreplaces to walk to keep it interesting. She found a park map showing the Franklin Park trails at the Bunker Hill natural area and they seemed fine. Due to me refusing to look at any other maps we did our walk there. We drove what felt like 50 miles from our home and parked in a small roadside parking area that can fit about a half dozen cars. There is a bulletin board there with a map and other information. We walked the brown trail which is blazed but not perfect. The tract of land is surrounded by a farm, a golf course and some suburban neighborhoods. Much of the maintained trail is grass or dirt with out serious undulations or difficult footing. The highlight of the trail is a 30 foot cliff above a shallow stream. If you walk after it has rained you may be treated to a waterfall. There is also an epic treehouse complete with wraparound the trunk spiral staircase, in someone's backyard. We continued to the yellow trail which traveled the perimeter of another tract and then retraced our footsteps back to the start point about 3 1/2 miles later. We passed a white tailed deer, mountain bike cyclist, a runner, two people walking dogs and maybe a half dozen other walkers. The trails seem safe and never to far from help even though you are in the woods and often under tree cover. Very nice for a township park and best of all there is no fee to visit.
