Courteous staff. Simple but clean room with a comfortable bed. Poor neighborhood, but never felt unsafe.

The George! What a memorable experience in understated elegance. Located in Montclair, NJ, just…read moreoutside NYC, the decor in this boutique hotel is sort of 'artsy Ralph Lauren'--classic plaids mixed with modern art and sparkly modern accent pieces. Each detail has been considered and seemed intended to delight: from the whimsical portraits of famous Georges in the lobby, to the selection of French pastries and cheeses at breakfast, and the Dyson hairdryers in the guest rooms. There were fun surprises at every turn. Where else can you eat a yogurt parfait in an adorable Emma Bridgewater French pedestal bowl under a large portrait of AOC? As someone who is a big fan of sweets, I was just tickled by the sight of the colorful selection of candy in the "secret" candy closet (which although perhaps is a poorly kept secret, was a surprise to me!), as well as the Häagen-Dazs bars in the ice cream freezer. We stayed in the Harry room which was just off the library and featured a cleverly curated collage of framed photos of famous Harrys--Harry Houdini, Harriet Tubman, Debbie Harry, and some less easily identifiable Harrys, which generated conversation (was Buddy Holly's name Harry?). I understand each of the rooms is decorated similarly, each with a different name. We enjoyed tea and cake in the library at tea time. The George offers a complimentary wine service every evening with several selections of wine as well. What an experience--a solid five stars--I hope to return soon.

When we arrived our room smelled awful, I mean STANK. I always bring a candle just so the space can smell like "home"but the candle was no match for the funk. I went downstairs and was immediately moved to another room, I really appreciated that. The rooms have been updating, to a point but you can tell the updates were surface level. In the bathrooms there was exposed piping and rust that was painted over because there was no fan for the steam. Random long black hairs were found in the tub and the bed also. Large parts of the ceiling paint were missing as well as improper sealing around the heater. The beds are sitting on some kind of hollow, and what sound like metal, platforms that when even slightly bumped up against make this LOUD ECHOING BANG that was so startling. So if traveling with young kids that you don't want to wake be sure to avoid any random bumps. They have breakfast from 6am-9am and it was solid. Eggs, sausage, waffles, muffins, tea, coffee, fruit and cereal. All the standards and the gentleman down there assisting was such a gem. Very helpful and accommodating without you even speaking. They also had an indoor pool and 24/7 gym but we didn't take advantage of those amenities. We only had a one day stay so while I can point out these things I can say my stay was a quiet one and the beds were comfortable. The water was hot and the heat worked as intended but it could be cleaner and/or updated fully. This location is 3mins from a target, 15mins from American dream mall and less than 10mins from the gas station. For $140/night you really can't beat that.

Since 2018 they have merged with Wyndham Rewards. I have booked some really good deals with Wyndam and accumulated enough points to get free stays. La Quinta in Rutherford is one of the finer hotels in the North that I have visited. Driving into the property you see Red Robins and then the hotel. Walking in I was a bit startled from the set up. It looked like an airport check in just before you take off your shoes. LOL! I made online reservations with ease and check in was a breeze. The concierge was professional, courteous, and very informative. They do have an additional $100 hold on your card. I booked a two bed for $129; with tax it came to about $248. Walking into the room left me speechless. The room was immaculate; the chairs were clean and sturdy and there was no carpet on the floor just laminated flooring which was a very good decision for sanitary reasons. The bathroom was handicap accessible. They have a gym, the largest continental breakfast room you'd ever seen, a pool that was OUT OF ORDER!! How??? They have other amenities as well. I had a very peaceful sleep with no disturbances. I have all intentions of returning.

I have been staying in this hotel probably 3 to 5 times a year for the past many years. As I said…read morein previous reviews, I like that for the location they have free parking. I have always stayed in a king room on the lower floors because the top floors are pricier executive kings. I know that the executive rooms have refrigerators and microwaves, but I expected them to also be a little nicer than the regular king rooms. Well, now I know that they are NOT. They are exactly the same size room and all they did is wheel in a fridge and pop a microwave on top of it and sit it under the lamp! I arrived at the hotel at around 2:35 on a Sunday. In all the years I've been coming here I have always been able to check into this hotel by 2:30, and as IHG member I typically request early check-in in the app. However, this time when I arrived, there were no rooms that were clean, no regular King rooms anyway... And then she said oh we don't have any clean Queen rooms either. Do you want an executive king? So I said sure, thinking that she was just gonna upgrade me to that because nothing was available. But now I was charged like an extra 40 or 50 bucks for it. And that actually annoyed me because I had gotten a really cheap rate this time because I had booked my stay about three months in advance. The other difference is the executive kings are on higher floors and they are facing in the opposite direction so instead of a view of the highway you actually do have a view of the far away New York City skyline. My volume control on my TV did not work so the volume was so low I could barely hear it. The ice machine on the ninth floor was out of ice. I will say that the beds are very comfortable in my opinion, and it is always been very quiet. This time I don't even think there was anybody on my floor. It was so quiet. The heating and cooling have always worked well in this hotel, but the hotel rooms are definitely showing where and are definitely in need of updating. The bathroom lighting is terrible if you need to do make up. Because I am IHG member I got two free bottles of water upon checking in which I always appreciate. Upon checkout when there was no ice to fill my cup for my 6 Hour Drive home I just asked if I could get another bottle of water because of the ice machine being out of ice and the girl at the front desk reminded me that usually you can get ONE free bottle of water at check-in, but she guessed I could have one. I was like for the 40 or 50 bucks extra I paid I hope I can get a freaking bottle of water. The other annoyance this time which is not surprising because the Sky restaurant does not seem to get much business...before my event I tried to go upstairs and get a burger. When I arrived on the 12th floor (which has a stunning panoramic view because the hotel is round) There were no staff people working. But this time aside from myself, there were about four other people waiting. There was a woman and her son sitting at the table and they said they've been waiting there for 15 minutes and have not seen a soul. This happened to me several times in this restaurant, but usually eventually somebody came within the first 15 minutes. I did not have time to wait this time and by the time a management person came up and said a chef was on his way I had to leave and eat elsewhere. I most likely will stay here again, but if I have another poor experience, I may end up having to finally switch hotels.

The sky restaurant was great for a cocktail and dinner, I had the chicken quesadilla starter and it was enough for my dinner. At breakfast the coffee was very good and hot. I wish I had taken photos of the premises, but I just started a Yelp account and I'm still not in the habit of taking photos of all the establishments I visit--yet. That being said, let's do a deeper dive, shall we? Check-In & Check-Out Looks pretty sketchy, in the evening, when my boyfriend and I checked in. I am used to using my card for incidentals as his mom carries his credit card around. This is the first place that has ever needed my ID, not his, for my credit card for just placing a hold for incidentals. We have a hotel date night once a month, so that's a lot of hotels. It was super strange. It's a lot friendlier in the day-time, especially checking-out. We had a small incident where my man left something in the room and the concierge, a woman, who was working at the time let us come back and let him back into the room to retrieve it. It was only an hour after check out and we are truly grateful! It happens. Small things get overlooked sometimes. Parking A decent sized parking lot, that's free, for a hotel of this size and the location. I like that I could keep an eye out on the car from our hotel room. Rooms Like I said in the opening paragraph the rooms are very deceiving. Everything in the room doesn't match. My man and I had a good laugh about it. He even said, "This is not making the top 5 hotels of where we've stayed at." The AC takes forever to turn on. The hot water takes quite awhile to get hot. The lighting in the bathroom is dim. But there is a nice full length mirror, which I definitely appreciated!! The TV was great and it had a lot of great channels, which was surprising but very nice. The only reason I gave this a mid-score and not a 1 or 2-star like the others is because this had to be one of the most comfortable beds I have had in a hotel room thus far. We both agreed that the bed was SO AMAZING. We both slept so well, despite the fact the curtains don't black out enough and you can hear traffic from the 3 from your room. But it was so comfy, I did not want to leave the bed the next morning. Plus they had a really nice plush blanket, I loved it. My man slept near the AC unit, but I get cold easily so that blanket was to die for for me. It was thin but warm. You also get a balcony with your room, it's not the best, but this is the first time we had a balcony with a room. Getting into your room from the check-in desk is also VERY weird. And absolutely sketchy. It honestly made me feel like I was walking into like restricted only area of a like a mental ward or something. It gave me really weird vibes. Elevator These elevators aren't huge. It's warm in them, and they can be a bit tight if you're traveling heavy. Affordability This is definitely a cheap hotel, and that's something that needs to be taken into account when you're reviewing or booking this place. This is definitely one of the cheapest hotels we've stayed in in the area, but we're both low on funds so that's why we opted for it. It is also really close in distance to the American Dream Mall, and it's not as confusing to get to and from as some of the other hotels in the area around the mall can be. I'm from PA, he's from NJ, for me the roads can be a little confusing and over stimulating at times. If you're looking for something that won't break your bank, this is it, but definitely be aware it is quite a bit run down and just weird. Food & Outings Like I said, you're off the 3. Coming and going is quite the breeze, and you have a lot of great options for food near you that you could walk to. We did not. And if you want to get to the mall, you're not far at all. From the mall, we drove like 10 minutes and we arrived. Overall Even though I was nervous and skeptical when I walked in, and it gave me the feel of a cheap motel, I'm not mad or upset. $113 TOTAL for 1-night well spent. Shout out to the woman works here during the day time! Thank you for letting my man come back and retrieve what he had forgotten. We appreciate you!
