Tex Mex Santa Fe - Taco Dream

For those of you who don't know, Tex-Mex didn't originate in Santa Fe. There's a reason it's called…read moreTEX-Mex, and it has nothing to do with the mild green chiles that are a standard part of New Mexican fare... but I digress. This place may not be the most authentic Tex-Mex I've ever eaten, but it was the closest thing to Tex-Mex I've had in Germany in a lo-o-o-ng time (burrito joints like Dolores and Bay Area Burrito notwithstanding). We ordered an appetizer of nachos with frijoles, and were a bit surprised to be served 8 round tortilla chips topped with refried beans and melted cheese. But, to be fair, they tasted pretty darn good! For the main course, I ordered a small chimichanga with chili con carne. Hallelujah! Someone understands that a chimichanga should be FRIED, not just pressed down on the grill on each side. Inside, the filling was pleasantly spicy, and appeared to be homemade, rather than from a can. Will wonders never cease?!?! Oh, but there it was: zucchini chunks. I should've guessed - no Mexican food in Germany is complete without either zucchini or mushrooms. So weird. My husband ordered the small 'wrap' with sauteed mushrooms, because it's apparently impossible to make a vegetarian burrito with only beans, rice and cheese in this country. He was pleased with the flavor, but mentioned that the Mexican rice seemed to be rather sweet. Best of all? Dos Equis Amber beer. But, next time, a wedge of lime would be preferred to a lemon. The ambience was interesting, with murals of the New Mexican desert all around. The servers were decked out in horribly tacky white plasticky cowboy hats, fake leather vests and pink plaid shirts, but we didn't see them too often (as is usually the case in German restaurants). Overall, we were happy with our experience. Maybe we just got lucky, but we'd definitely give this place another try the next time we're in Dresden.

As a study abroad student in Europe who was craving Mexican food, this hit the spot. My friend and…read moreI started with the Chips and Dips combo for 5.80. The chips had some good seasoning to them, and the dips (cheddar-cheese, salsa mexicana, curry salsa, sour-cream, and guacamole) were pretty good. I had the chicken quesadilla for my entree (9.80), and it also came with what I think was a small chimichanga. It was good, and it was a lot of food, especially after the chip and dip combo! We also had good strawberry margaritas for 6.20. I only give it 3 stars, because it doesn't measure up to the quality of mexican food I have in the US. However, I would return the next time I need my Mexican food fix.

This is a nice tapas restaurant in downtown Dresden…read more We only went for some German beer and a place to hang out for a nice conversation. There food menu has some limited options but the beer is what we were looking for. The service was great and the space was clean and comfortable. Be awate that Las Tapas is located in the middle of everything, so there is plenty to do around but limited parking. It is easy to get there via public transportation. Highly recommended!

Hours: One macro level note, the hours for this restaurant are strange by U.S. standards. Lunch hours are restricted or not available on holidays. Midday is a food dessert where only cake is allowed. Dinner hours are limited. Very odd hours overall. If you're a Marriott member who is given a choice between the Euro 10 voucher and points at the hotel, take the points, otherwise expect to be frustrated by the randomness. Food: We had breakfast twice and snacks at the bar once. Breakfasts were decent. Just a buffet of average stuff you'd find in Germany including sausages, horrible bacon, runny eggs, cold cuts, yogurt, fruit, etc. We ordered some French fries at the bar, and they were pathetic. For Euro 6, the fries were not cheap, were soggy, and insanely over salted. Also, ketchup was Euro 3 for a tiny portion! Euro 3 for a condiment is absolutely insane! Service: Pathetic. At breakfast, expect to wait unreasonably long for coffee. At the bar, expect to be ignored for extended periods of time. Designing the bar to be part of the check-in counter was simply a stupid mistake from a service perspective. Also, the servers at both the restaurant and bar are simply sluggish and lackadaisical; perhaps the lack of service results from Germany being a semi-socialist state where tipping is not common. But this restaurant is worse than average for service in Germany and a downright service disaster by first-world standards.

NOTE: Breakfast i recommend - 4 stars. Dinner - 2 stars…read more This is inside the Gewandhaus Dresden Marriott autograph collection hotel. This is where you have breakfast. The hotel is lovely and the breakfast area is lovely too. The restaurant is located in the middle of the building so no close breeze from the outside when the door opens, but that also means the restaurant runs on the warmer side. Dinner: we needed a snack before our show at the Opera. We went to the bar and the bartender provided us a menu and then when we ordered, she said the kitchen was closed. What is up with giving me a menu and allowing me to look and then tell me the kitchen is closed. We asked can we order something and since we had Elite status I think they made an exception. She said the kitchen will make us French fries. We said okay. She asked did we want mayonnaise or ketchup. We said ketchup. The French fries arrived and they were real potatoes and they temperature piping hot but soggy. How do you mess up French fries? We had a 10 euro food voucher since we are Marriott Elite, we asked how much to see if we had extra leftover. The French fires were 6 euros but the ketchup was 3 euros. Really? 3 euros for ketchup! Bartender just looked at us and said sorry, now she should have told us PRIOR to ordering the ketchup would have been an up charge. Staff: it is very hit and miss on service. Nobody really stood out. Be prepared to hunt down an employee if you want a refill on drinks. The first day, we were given a carafe or water and coffee so need to ask for refills. But the second day, we had to ask twice to get a coffee refill. Breakfast: It is self serve buffet style, but to get drinks like coffee, water, juice, tea, you might have to beg for a refill. Order your drinks right when sit down because you might not see someone to ask for refills again. The breakfast offers typical eggs, bacon, sausage. The eggs don't taste like real eggs, they are just okay. But hot sauce or the mushrooms added on top makes them taste better. The sausage is delicious. There is a waffle station and i recommend them, they are very good. The machine has a button that you must push to activate the machine for the waffle to cook. A nice guest assisted me because I poured my batter and walked away. The waffles take 3 minutes to cook. You might want to add two cups of batter into the machine, there were empty spots in my waffle. The yogurt is delicious with added fruit and nuts. There is a real honeycomb that is nice fresh honey, but is can be hard to scoop.
