    Lap of Love

This is a review you never want to have to write... to be honest…read more When the time came for us to make the difficult decision to send our 11.5 year old bulldog to heaven, I knew that we wanted him to be comfortable and stress-free at home. I had used another pet hospice company a few years prior for our first dog, but they were not open on Sunday and I wanted to make the appointment for Monday. Lap of Love came up on Google as another option in Grand Rapids - they are new in the area in the last 1.5 years. They were open and taking calls on a Sunday and after going through their website, i decided that I was comfortable enough to make the phone call. I had my hesitations due to the company being a national chain but reviews put me at ease; the local Grand Rapids Lap of Love is a local vet team. The initial phone call was easy enough. The person who I spoke with was very sympathetic and let me cry and compose myself multiple times while making me feel comfortable to do so. I appreciated that they did take payment at that time, so I would not have to worry about it the day of. They sent a conformation email after the phone call with any info we may need. The day of Dr. Kelly called to let me know she was on her way and gave me her ETA. When she arrived she was very kind, gentle, and sympathetic to the situation. She explained everything in detail before she started, talked with us about our boy, and made the whole situation as easy as possible. She walked us through everything she was doing, always asking permission before she did anything. She put us at ease with her gentle nature and her compassion. She told us to cuddle him, lay with him, hold him, or whatever we wanted. She would work around us. Giving us the freedom to feel comfortable and not awkward during such a sensitive time. She took a paw print for us, offered to trim a lock of hair, and gave us a booklet on grieving for a pet before she left. As we had opted to take care of his remains, she made sure we were okay and had everything we needed and any questions we had. The following day she sent a very nice email expressing her sympathy and offering some support options, should we need it. I am so thankful for compassionate Dr.'s like Dr. Kelly who are there to help families in such a difficult time. Loosing a pet is hard and having to make the decision to end their suffering is gut wrenching and such a hard choice to make. I am very thankful for the option to do it at home where our dog was comfortable, stress-free, and relaxed. Should anyone find themselves in the situation where they have the luxury of letting their pet pass at home, I would highly recommend to look into at home euthanasia - Lap of Love was truly great.

In particular, Stacy's handling of our recent phone calls reflected a lack of compassion, empathy, and concern during a time of real urgency. Rather than trying to offer any referrals, recommendations, or alternatives, she made it clear that she was unwilling to help, which only added to an already stressful and painful situation. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time I've encountered this tone from the Great Lakes office staff. I've repeatedly experienced cold, dismissive responses when reaching out with genuine concerns, which has left me feeling unsupported and disregarded. This is particularly disappointing coming from a place meant to care for animals and their families -- the first point of contact should set a tone of warmth and concern, especially when clients are calling in distress. Had Stacy approached the situation with compassion and a willingness to help, I believe the conversation could have gone very differently. The fact that I received an email from the hospital manager terminating care while I was in the middle of trying to get urgent help for my pet only reinforced the feeling that Great Lakes does not prioritize empathy or client support. I will, of course, find another provider moving forward -- one whose values align more closely with what I expect in animal care.
