We just picked up our baby, Sophie's ashes today from Rolling Acres. It's during the Coronavirus lockdown, which has made everything about her euthanasia painful. Rolling Acres was a comfort to us. We were so happy we found a place that allowed us to keep her cremains. They were attentive, sensitive, and it was outside the city in a beautiful setting. We dropped our girl off, and she was ready for pick up the next day. I had never had any experience with cremation before and was not sure what to expect. Rolling Acres offers a group or individual cremation, and we chose the latter. They charge by animal weight. It was fair, and affordable. They will pick up from the vet, or you can take your pet out to them. Her remains were in a box about the size of a large cupcake, but heavier. Our girl was 22lbs. My puppy passed after being ill for some time. We were at crushing loss. It happened on this Sunday. After many years and prayers we realize it's Sunday and Rolling Acres was closed. We called and left a voicemail. Lost in our sorrow we had no idea what we were doing or what to do with her seven pounds of love we lost. I expected to have her in her tiny hand held kennel for the night. Crushing us once again. We decided we wanted a foot print and prepared to race to Hobby Lobby but again Sunday. They were closed. We were sitting in the driveway and the phone rang. Tom called saying he stopped in by chance and hear our voice mail. He said he would stay if we wanted to bring our sweet baby out. I told him we had her and were looking for a place to get her foot print. He had a kit that was instant. We raced out and this amazing gentleman with a heart of gold and a soft beautiful voice. He made the paw print right there. It was heartbreakingly beautiful. He gently gathered information and our Mollie. We cried and he comforted us. Today he called and we picked her up. The oak urn was beautiful and our hearts felt healing. She's home. We are heartbroken but Tom was a gift from God. Thank you for being there for us in our time of need. If you read about the history of Rolling Acres on their website, you'll find that Patricia Strnot is a pioneer in this area in filling the need for pet cremation. She's been doing this since 1977, and the handwriting on the certificate she made for my beloved kitty is getting a little shaky, but she could not have been more sweet to me. She was attentive and kind, and I felt badly for not staying to chat when I picked up my kitty's ashes, because she is obviously an interesting lady with a lot to tell me, but I was worried I'd start bawling again, as I had when I dropped him off. I'll send a little note. When you bring in your pet, you're invited to leave him/her in a little room where you can say your final goodbyes privately after business is done. The fee is less than a company I looked at in Omaha, and more than one south of town who never returned my call. She called to be sure she'd spelled my pet's name correctly on the certificate, which was very thoughtful. They also did all they could to make sure I could pick him up on the same day, but I'm sure this wouldn't always be possible, especially with a larger pet. I brought a dear pup there a few years ago. Someone...Mr. Strnot? took me back and let me see what would happen. He even let me put her in the unit, to ease my fears that the ashes I got back would not be hers. He explained that they do the cremation in one of several different sized units for different sized pets. (It's OK if the pet is wrapped in a favorite blanket or something). Then they wait until the unit cools down, and what is left includes bones. These are ground and added to the ashes swept from the unit. For a small dog or cat, you're left with just a handful, which they give to you in a nice small box with his or her name on it. It was a lovely winter day when I took that pup in, and I waited in the parking lot until the smoke came up. I was disappointed when it headed southeast, instead of back toward our home, as I'd hoped, bringing her spirit with it. Later, I found a little rescue pup, who had so many of the same mannerisms and habits as my previous pup that I thought she might be her reincarnation, and then I remembered the smoke, heading southeast of Lincoln. My new pup was rescued in Independence, Missouri. I'm an educated person, but that doesn't mean I can't be spiritual. As I told Patricia, I like to place the ashes behind a favorite picture in a memory/shadow box type of frame. But there are also many stones, markers and urns to choose from in their office. There is even a lovely little cemetery there where your ashes can spend eternity with those of your pet, if that is what you wish, and it may be this that Patricia is most proud of. This is particularly significant in the state of Nebraska where there are more regulations for burial than in any other state. You could wait until no one was looking and scatter your pet's ashes/or other loved one's on your cemetery plot, or your could find a way to have them placed in with you in your coffin, and I know a lot of aftercare workers who would look the other way, but none of it would be strictly legal in Nebraska. Patricia and her family have made sure we have an option if everyone else tells us no, and for that I am very grateful. I can now take those pets who have passed with me in my moves from here on out, and have them with me wherever they scatter me. Thank you so much Patricia Strnot and family. We didn't take advantage of this option as I was in the middle of law school finals and my husband had to work when we lost Smugg. The company's website is adamant that the public be aware of how a reputable crematorium runs and what cremains actually look like. (Hint: they look nothing like what I received back from Whispering Pines when I used their services to cremate my rats at $50 each). My husband dealt with the staff when he picked up Smugg's cremains, and he was impressed with their stoic but sympathetic demeanor. The cost of cremation was pretty standard but I forget what it was. I know we weren't shocked or surprised. Sadly, I fear the cremains that Rolling Acres returned to us may be the only ones that are truly and exclusively our animal's. I was glad to know that these wonderful people were still providing services to the public as I learned later a cemetery in Omaha was being "dug up" for a future business venture. I buried my first pet back in 1982, his name was Tippy. After his burial a picture of his headstone was in a newspaper article promoting the new pet cemetery in our area. After my Shanti passed recently I immediately called the cemetery to have them pick her up. This was on a Sunday and I was advised it was closed, but I knew better. I phoned and later heard they picked her up that day. Yesterday I made my way to locate a spot. The area looked worn as trees grew and headstones were moved and obviously several headstones had shown their age as do for all cemeteries. But we found a lovely spot in a newer location where I found I could reserve a spot for all my pets for future burials. I was so relieved to know my pets could be buried together as a family. Tomorrow is the day for her burial and I was happy I still have the choice with a private burial with cremations being so popular. I haven't been out in the past few years since my parents passed to see Tippy, but now with Shanti there my visits will start up again. Thank you for keeping your promises to our community and keeping the cemetery in tact. I don't know the laws regarding the preservation of a pet cemetery but I encourage others to do the same and do business with this pet cemetery. They made it affordable to make a place for all my pets, and now I can rest in that peace of mind. read more
