The owner was very helpful in helping me find a simple infinity sign, silver ring, which has become my new favorite. This store is great for cute obscure gifts for friends and family. This is definitely my favorite store in Albany and what made my trip there worthwhile. One of my friends and I took a day trip from New York City to Albany. We decided to walk along Lark Street to check out the shops there and stumbled on this gem. The owner of the store was very nice and let us place our belongings near the front of the store so we didn't have to carry them around the whole time. We didn't feel pressured or watched at all even though we were probably younger looking than most of the people that shopped here. The items themselves were very unique and you could tell they were handpicked for quality. Very good place to shop if looking for a gift. My friend decided to get something from the jewelry case which was already low priced. He then proceeded to tell us that it was on sale for $5 because of Valentine's Day which was such a good deal for a vintage necklace! He was very nice and answered all our questions about Albany while checking the item out. He was very helpful and suggested a couple of other stores we could check out on the same street. He wrapped the gift so nicely and even included some chocolate which was so thoughtful since my friend got it for her mother. This is one of my go-to gift shops when it comes to the ladies in my life. There's a great selection of jewelry, along with luxurious-seeming bath products, calendars and gorgeous housewares. Around Christmas time, this is my favorite spot to stock up on beautiful ornaments in a wide array of designs. You'll also find nice locally-made chocolates, beanie babies for the wee ones and what has to be the best card selection in the entire region. Oh, did I mention the small selection of "vintage" clothes and accessories too? I found one of my absolute favorite dresses here for $15. This is also the spot for the rainbow-friendly. Seriously, if you've ever needed a dirty Dorothy Gale card or some rainbow lights or a nudie male calendar, this is the spot. Lots of great Pride accessories and goofy things like candy penises, along with some slightly more risque stuff too. I had no idea until recently that they even sell a small selection of vibrators. The staff is always friendly and prices are usually fair and the store frequently has good sales. Romeo's is a Lark Street icon at this point and that's a good thing, to paraphrase Martha. read more

romeo's is a fantastic place to find all sorts of cool things. (most of them are slightly risque however so those of you that are easily offended by some of the baser sides of human nature may want to just go to the mall.) they have some wonderful cards to choose from for all occasions (and yes, these can be naughty too) including some from some very talented local artists. they have some great art pieces as well for any occasion if you are shopping for that friend that Has Everything (like a number of mine do) and you just can't find anything. whenever i am feeling desperate and thinking i will have to succumb to buying them a fantastic dinner, i can depend on going here and finding something unique. (of course then we end up going out to dinner anyway...) they have a lot of same sex love literature as well as spoof gifts that will make any of your homophobic friends weep. (i love the male dolls all dressed up in bondage gear. i may have to give one to my brother. ~ she says as she emits an evil giggle.) they also have great wrapping paper and some interesting jewelry. (oh, and quite often they have surprise sale items that give you that special gift of spending less money than you had expected. yay!!) the parking is solely on lark st but the walk is well worth it. and if you take your kids, just be prepared to put your hands over their eyes a few times or redirect their attention. read more

As much as I like this store, I always feel like I'm being watched carefully while browsing by one of the staff. Maybe it's my look of jeans, t-shirt and worn out chucks that scream shoplifter or serial killer. Otherwise, this is a great shop. You can be in there an hour and still miss something. I really like this place. They have really good hours - opened late. They are up stairs so their street sign is helpful to tell when they are opened. They have a mix of stuff here. Candles, oils, soap, etc. I can't get enough of that kind of stuff so that would be enough for me. Their prices are pretty good - and less than many boutique specialty stores. They also have nice jewelery. It is a mix of handmade stuff (some local -which is great for the "buy local" folks) and like silver and beady stuff. Good quality too. They have sales sometimes too, that brings down their prices. Prices on jewelery is varied, but reasonable. They have a large selection of nice cards. I think this is the place to go if you want to get a high quality birthday or holiday card. They have a fair share of kitsch, but like tasteful kitsch (does that exist?). Like custom margarita cups with funny phrases, cat and dog lover things, stuff like that. Good for funny gifts, etc. They have a little corner of lgbt stuff and a sex section. both are small, but I guess it is the only place I've been to in Albany so far that has that - so if that's your thing it is worth checking out. Finally, they have a selection of vintage/used items. They are scattered throughout the store so it's not a consignment digging place - just keep your eyes opened and you'll see the stuff around. Joe and his staff are wonderful. My husband and I buy gifts here all the time. From adult coloring books and hilarious cards to funky jewelry and beautiful stemware, Romeo's is the place to find a great gift for family and friends with a good sense of humor. Joe wraps purchases beautifully. He often offers storewide sales and donates gift certificates to support local fundraising events. This is one of my favorite stores in Albany.
