I bought a puzzle there and it was flawed, a 1000 piece puzzle, and at the end the last pieces overlapped. They would not exchange it for a different puzzle. I am happy to provide a photo. Just know if you shop there they do not stand by the quality of the merchandis. read more

Love this place! It's perfect around Christmas if you need a last minute gift. And it's quirky without being over the top. They have a nice selection of various things, and I always stop in when I'm passing by just to see the new products. Tons of preserves, dips, and sauces, and LOTS of chocolates - good chocolates too. The best thing they have right now is the Beekman Bros. products! It's pricey but absolutely worth it, and Pearl Grant's is the only local place I've found so far that sells their stuff! Excellent selection and customer-first service -- and a surprisingly wide price range, so that you're sure to find something, regardless of budget. Fun to browse. We'd received a gift from PGR... but, alas, despite excellent packaging, it arrived broken. I called them and received profuse apologies for our trouble (though the damage clearly wasn't their fault) and because, alas, the particular item was no longer available from the artist. Instead, I was issued a full store credit with no hassle whatsoever. It took me over a year to get back to the Capitol District and into the store. I'd never been inside before, but it's really remarkable -- they have a great inventory, and some especially beautiful pottery / glassware. Since it had been so long, it took awhile to locate my credit in their (updated) system, but the manager was diligent and friendly and soon I was picking out new items. On impulse, I also grabbed a neat card that unfolds into a model of the solar system for a recently-visited "nephew." It was so well received that I was informed I have now cemented "Most Favored Uncle" status. Thanks, PGR! read more

I've been coming here since I was a little kid doing all my Christmas shopping at Pearl Grants and Woolworths for my entire family all in one trip. My Nana lived in McGownville and we would walk to Stuyvesant Plaza. The Plaza has become an upscale and expensive place since then but I still enjoy stores like Pearl Grants because you can buy unique gifts for people who are hard to shop for. Even if you're not buying it's fun just to look around. SO much to see. read more

Old fartism alert! In my youth the old-school downtown Department stores (I'm thinking Filene's in Boston, Higbee's in the midwest, Kauffman's in Pittsburgh, Wanamaker's in Philadelphia, et alia) used to have a department that I can't quite come up with a name for it. They had a candy counter, usually with petit fours and the like, often hand made at the store itself. They had a team of tea ladies who would serve you a real sit-down tea, and there were adjacent gifty-type things, figurines for your Aunt Pauline or the kind of engraved picture frames that festooned your Grandma's dressing table, along with cards and perhaps a specialty gift item the store was known for. This department was strategically located near restrooms, the customer service counter, and on a floor wedged between two high-service floors, near (but not too near) the escalators (or in the case of Wanamaker's, on the ginormous main floor.) Pearl Grant Richman's, near as I can tell, is that old school gifty-candy-department, minus the tea service (you can go down the mall to Peaches, I guess), ripped from the old school department store and transported through some kind of time warp to this odd throwback-but-decent strip mall that is Stuyvesant Plaza. They also have some very miscellaneously-selected jarred gourmet food items. I normally don't go in for the types of wares here but it must be said the Mrs. has found a number of useful office/professional gifts here, which makes it worth stopping into occasionally even if we don't want candy or World's Best Granddaughter gear. read more

I was in the store recently to purchase some Beekman 1802 products. I was not sure which fragrance I wanted, so I lowered my mask just past my nose so that I could make a good decision. I was asked by the person at the counter to "Please keep your mask on while in the store". I told her that I was smelling product, to which she replied "You can smell it through your mask". If that were the case, my mask is not of much good, is it? Never going back. read more

PGR is living proof that shopping can still be an elegant experience. I love that there is a little bit of everything here, from clothing to candy and a lot in between. I would say that this is an ideal place for gift shopping, take your time to explore the displays and you will find something for that special someone. I wound up doing all of my Christmas shopping here over two nights, all of it! Nieces, nephews, parents, in-laws and my dear wife too. I remember Pearl Grant and the type of high-end products she carried. she would travel all over the world buy the most beautiful things. Silver, China, Stemware, Linens and fine gifts that were all the rage in Albany. At the time anyone who got married registered at Pearl Grants. The Richman's have now added more moderate lines of merchandise too and some how, some way you still feel the spirit and love that Pearl Grant put into her store. read more

Bought a few gifts for my wife but then had to return them (she gave me a few suggestions of more important "wants"). When I went to return them, I was told it is past the 2 week return policy and I could only get a store credit. Rather than get a credit for a place I will never shop again, my wife gets more gifts than planned. I could have gotten these items on line and returned them with no hassle. Instead I try and support a local independent business. Since they have nothing but contempt for their customers, I welcome the day the business is gone! read more
