Amazing service from Ernie! My car broke down on my drive home from work and AAA roadside assistance got me connected with Ernie who was able to assist me on a busy holiday weekend. He kept in touch and let me know how long it would be (his estimate was spot on too) and he was very fast and thorough in hooking my car up to tow it back to Reno (broke down in Truckee). He was also so nice to converse with on the drive back and he has some really fun stories! Ernie took great care of my car and got it safely placed at a garage after hours, all the while keeping me updated. Toddlers can get stuck in running cars. Imagine your about to leave and you have that red light on the dash that says a door is still open. You get out to check it and two seconds later you hear "click". Junior who's buckled into his car seat in back leaned over and locked the doors. Now I,m there with a hammer in my hand so if he so much as flinches toward the seat belt I'm going through the window while mom plays "push the little button again honey". With a 20 minute drive time Ernie is there in 22. When people have the wallet out prepared to pay what ever is requested, he laughed and said he didn't charge for emergency child extractions! BEWARE!!!!!! Nieces car was towed 0.9miles to their location. It supposedly took them 1.5 hours at $240/hour to accomplish this task. The car was not in a ditch, in snow or even stuck on top a tree...it was sitting on the paved road. To have the car towed to Quincy (30 miles away) would have cost a total of $225 with another tow service. One of the other tow services in Portola charges $80 for the first 5 miles. According to Ron's tow service, fees are set by CHP and according to CHP the fees are set by the tow service. There seems to be some issue here about who is responsible or perhaps both parties are giving a lil bit of a run around. To make a long story short, mainly because I am tired of explaining what a horrible business this is, my niece walked out with a $420 bill. Negative 50 stars if possible. read more

Without even coming out to take a look, they refused my business, and told me to call a friend with a 4 wheel drive tow truck. Our car needing towing from the middle of nowhere to Sacramento and the dealership called Ron's. Tim was our driver and he was very professional and helpful during the whole process. He drove us 2 1/2 hours (one way) with good humor and pleasant conversation. We got a flat on the tow truck before leaving Portola and the owner and other employees came to help and ferry us around. Ernie of Ron's towing completely took care of us when our car broke down on a Sunday morning, from towing to car repair to lodging accommodations. As soon as he got out of church, Ernie arrived and towed us to his shop. While Ron's Towing is not an auto repair shop, Ernie worked all afternoon replacing a rubber hose joint in our engine in an effort to get us on the road home that day. And his sweet wife, Rebecca, drove all the way to Reno and back to get the necessary part. Any idea how much a mechanic charges for working on a car all Sunday afternoon (4-5 hours) and obtaining the part 50 miles away? They charged us minimally for the part and did not seek reimbursement for their time. When that repair was complete, he diagnosed that the engine needed a new coil so Ernie made a call to the local Ford mechanic and arranged for our car to be worked on first thing Monday morning. Not only that, Ernie called the family that we had stayed with the previous two nights and made arrangements for us to stay with them that night, too. After our coil replacement first thing Monday morning, we were on the road home by 10 am . Ernie and Rebecca (and cute dogs) are more than professional. They are loving, kind, self-sacrificing, and thoughtful servants who gave up their Sunday afternoon to help us. Ron's Towing is the best in the Sierra Valley!
