I've been shopping at the R&B outlet since my mid-20 grad school days. Now in my early 40's, I can say that great deals are still to be found and my furniture from over a decade ago and multiple moves around the country is still holding up well, looks classically stylish, and has been a great investment. I've never done the opening hour stampede, so I can't speak to that insanity, but I have been there when it's crowded, but also when it's chill. Persistence is key, doing some research on what you want before you go, and having a realistic budget in mind are all part of setting yourself up for success. In 2008, I got a $3000 couch for $800. They shipped it and delivered to my living room in NJ for about $100. She is still with me, going strong. There was a puppy pee accident about 5 years after purchase and R&B replaced the cushion insert for me at a very reasonable cost ($250?). [Insert loads of great finds over the years for me, friends, and family who I would shop for virtually and R&B would take payment over the phone.] Fast forward to yesterday, while back in MN for a visit, I popped over because the piece we wanted for our guest bedroom/office is delivering mid-Nov new, so I figured, why not check the outlet? LUCK! There she is, $1200 less than list, and if there is something wrong with her, I can't find it...even after an associate helped me move it around and look for issues. I'll probably drop back in today to see if there's any new stock on Sunday, just in case :) read more

Love this store! It's only open on the weekends, so the lines to get in can get long. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. I have had some trips where I didn't find anything, but other trips where I've brought home a ton of things. It all depends on what they get in each day. Have you ever seen those one-day wedding dress sales where the women try to kill each other for a wedding dress? The Room & Board Outlet is kind of like that but with families/couples and furniture instead of dresses. So, the rundown works like this: Open only on the weekends on a first come-first served, what you see is what you get, all sales are final basis, the showroom is open to sell Room & Board overstock at a discounted price. Inventory changes all the time. Depending on what you want, you could save substantial dough and steal something for 30-50 percent off retail maybe. There are mostly couches, chairs, sectionals, tables and the like and then there is a smattering of other smaller items for the taking. I will say, this could be quite the place to find a deal on a coffee table, side tables or other small items like that. If you're willing to fight the crowd, get there early, wait in line and be ready to decide immediately whether you want an item or not, this could legitimately be a chance to score a great deal on some furniture. If this is not your type of thing or you want something really specific, it could be a place to look just in case you get lucky and find the exact right piece at a discount. If you hate people, crowds and channeling your favorite New York City cabbie to defend your find, stay away. Maybe I feel lukewarm on it because I can't imagine making a furniture decision that quickly. Maybe it's because I generally don't like crowds. But more likely it's because I'm just cheap and I still think even this discounted furniture is too expensive. I'm sure others think this is the bees knees of furniture shopping. Eh. I had really high hopes for my trip to the Room and Board outlet. I am in the market for new home furnishings and love their style and quality. I do not love their prices so an outlet sounded like a good option. I guess I missed the memo about arriving early and being first in line to snag the best furniture. I arrived maybe an hour or so after opening and there just wasn't a lot left that I was in the market for. Even so I looked around to ensure I didn't mIss anything and thought they had a lot of good stuff. Most wasn't damaged or in bad shape. If it was in good condition and if you might have wanted it was likely already sold. Pricing is still pretty high on a lot of the pieces. Not screaming deals like I was also hoping for. It probably doesn't help a lot of furniture is backordered forever so I think it's good they had as much as the did. I am glad I checked it out while I was in town. I'd go back every weekend if I lived closer but sadly I don't and I will have to find another way to fullfil my Room and Board dreams. read more

We've found so many great deals over the years, its amazing. This place is a lot of fun, especially if you're willing to get here early on Saturday morning. Today was especially fun because of our salesperson, Nancy. She helped us furnish our new home by listening to what we needed, even looking at pictures of our living space. She offered us great advice, even cautioning us against spending money where it was not needed. That's the kind of sales that is rare today. I have heard about this place for years and finally made it there today. It's a large whse in Golden Valley with tons of items!! I was looking for a specific piece as I already have several other Room and Board pieces I needed a match to. I found several items to chose from a great prices. That being said things at the outlet are not cheap but are between 25-70% off the retail price. Most items I saw we're not damaged so it was mostly items in good condition. Room and Board is sort of like shopping at Byerly's. Their stuff is great and they charge a premium. Obviously we would all like to buy everything we need from both but it's just not feasible for most of our budgets (certainly not mine). We spent months picking through the Room & Board catalog in search of just the right piece to fit in our little 1920s living room. We waited it out and found a Chelsea sectional that fit perfectly at 40% off. It's excellent and we were happy with the price. All their stuff is hand made and the vast majority is made in the US. We got our beautiful stylish sectional couch here for about double the price of an IKEA sectional - and about 5 times the style. People universally comment on it when they walk into our apartment. It has stood up fairly well to two dogs, and wine stains and even once blood from a nosebleed. Sal's recommendation about showing up around 3 on Saturday is spot on - if you are not into competitive furniture shopping (we are definitely not into lining up and running through a store) - they unload a second truck mid-afternoon and the crowds are MUCH, much more civilized. It's not a crazy discount, but it is sizeable and for the quality and style of the goods we thought it was worth it. read more

Really its a 3.75 star. The quality of the furniture is great. Its Room and Board stuff, just overstock. I've gotten some patio furniture here and they held up wonderfully. Realize though that the prices, while discounted, are still R&B prices...meaning tables are almost always in the thousand range, sofas in the 1.5K + range (not always but basically between 1.5K to 2K+) and chairs are weirdly expensive. So you won't get Ikea prices here, despite the line around the corner. About the line around the corner - Sat AM people will line up to get in for first stab at everything, though I have found that even if you aren't first in line, it is ok, and you can find what you need. Unless you are that person that can make a decision on a 2K table in 10mins. I am not. I hem and I haw, and if it gets taken before I get it, well...it wasn't meant to be. Sundays tend to be pretty picked over, but if you are just browsing, you end up not having the same crowds as Sat, and the atmosphere is less crazy. Shipping and everything else from them were great. $99 for a 100mile radius (I think), and $150 (?I think) beyond that. Flat fee, so buy everything if you can at once. read more

The legend goes that this place used to have amazing deals, and for those deals there are STILL lines into the parking lot on Saturday mornings. Run for what you want and sit on it, they say. Get there early. But since this became a popular spot, at some point the deals got less affordable, and now the parking lot is occupied by cars that clearly don't belong to broke college and grad students. So yes, there is free coffee, and some of the furniture is enjoyable to drink that coffee on; but when you've given up, ask the nearest salesperson for directions to IKEA. read more

This place is heaven on earth. I feel like a total yuppy writing a review about an expensive furniture store outlet, but the truth is, I'd much rather buy American made anything for the same price as Ikea crap. I have bought a beautiful 98 inch Clarke couch here, and it has really been the centerpiece of my home. The furniture is barely damaged if at all, and a lot of it comes directly from the catalogue photo shoot or from the stores floor models. We are moving out of state soon, and I just learned that you can ship ANYTHING you buy here for just $89, and they will deliver the furniture TO YOUR DOOR in another state. How amazing is that!? We are certainly going to buy our furniture here, and have it shipped. We will probably save thousands of dollars doing this. read more

I arrived around 1130 on a Saturday and it was packed. Most of the sofas were already yellow tagged (sold) which was a bummer but overall the quality and selection was still impressive given it's an outlet. I honestly feel like they should triple in size if they have the inventory (which it appeared they did!). If you're looking for 40-60% off high quality MCM, it's a cool spot to browse. After a first visit to the Golden Valley outlet, I can see some repeat visits in the next few months. By some I mean a lot. We arrived around 9:30am and despite the chilly morning, hopped in line like it was black friday. What baffled me was that no one in line really knew what they were looking for, and all 100 people in line got in by 10:05. I had great luck finding a matching walnut dresser and nightstand - both about 50% off. I also found a walnut entertainment center; quite R&B lesson learned - someone tried to "check out" the ticket price while I was holding on to it waiting for a "sold" sticker. Do.Not.Fall.For.This and hang on to that ticket with your life! An $89 flat fee delivery too is not bad! Cannot wait for more to arrive. Also if you are in the market for upholstered sofas and/or chairs, they have some great ones! read more

This is a great place to go if you are in the in between like me - you want good quality furniture, but you are used to buying most things from ikea, and aren't used to the crazy high prices of nice furniture! Hours are 10 on sat and 12 on sun - if you are serious about shopping, get there at least 20 min before it opens so you get first dibs on everything! We recently purchased a white MARBLE Sarrinen circular petal bottom dinning table at R and B over $1000. In a few months we noticed rings (water mark from glass of water) and dots from water on table. No matter how we tried using fancy Italian marble cleaner....etc to rid of these unsightly markings to no avail. Called R & B, one sale woman said happened to her table also.Nothing could be done. Called Midwest Marble told us table was NOT sealed, thus will retain all spills. -hundred to resurface. Called R &B again and again, they said NOTHING can be done, even they admitted they DID NOT have BUYER CAUTION prominently displayed i.e. marble surface NOT SEALED, will absorb all spills, difficult to impossible to remove. This is the SAME merchandize sold full price about $2K at regular store. No matter, should warn customers!!!!! It will be our choice if we want to eat from an unsealed white marble table that needs to be totally covered with table cloth or placemats!! ( I suspect it saves cost for R and B to omit sealing the surface) That's deceptive advertising through omission, unfitting for a place like Room and Board. I didn't really know what to expect coming here. I knew their stuff was expensive, but reading other Yelpers' reviews made me want to check it out and see what kind of deals they had. Man...serious buyers only! When I think of Minnesotans, I think of friendly people, always saying hi in passing, but when you get a Room and Board Outlet here in Golden Valley, they've all of a sudden become this rude, hovering buyer! I was in the tabletop section and this woman just walks in front of me and starts going through the selection and each step I took either to the left or right of her, she'd step the same way so that I couldn't get near the damn area. Otherwise, people would sit on the sofa....kind of a way to tell other prospective buyers that they've reserved the sofa. They definitely have beautiful furniture there! It's up my alley, but with my small budget, it wasn't going to fit it at all! It's ok though, when I get that job and we purchase a new home, this is THE place I'm going to buy my furniture. So, when the budget is bigger, I'll be there bright and early to check out the selection! The products they sell look like really good quality as well as materials they use. I would definitely skip out on going to the Room and Board store in Edina where prices are probably sky high. The outlet is much more affordable! What more can you say about an outlet who ever week (and i have heard multiple times during each day) sets out a ton of furniture at discounted (almost cost or below cost) price? I LOVE R&B furniture. It is classic, beautiful, and timeless. I would highly recommend getting to the outlet about 30 min before they open his there is always a long line of people sitting outside excited to go in and look around. Some of the pieces will have a small scratch on them, but nothing is sold that isn't up to R&B extremely high quality. This is a MUST go to place for furniture. read more

Well, the parking situation is a bit chaotic on Saturday after we left Posh Bridal. Everyone seemed to be in a rush to get to the door at R&B Outlet. The place is packed and there are people there with friends holding furniture as I have been told. If you see something you like, get your friend to sit on it. Then, you go get the R&B associate to put a tag that it is sold to you. Well, we only took 15 minutes to look around. Prices seem to be good to bad depending on your taste. Honestly, I don't know why some things just look okay but priced outrageously. Anyways, you get the idea when you see something you like and latch on it. Thank goodness, we just browsed to see what was out there. There are some nice pieces but just make sure it is in the condition you are fine with. NO BACKIES since all sales final. read more

I'm nervous writing this, since I am the one screwing up the perfect rating of the place, but I have to do it!!! At first, guilt got the best of me, so I gave it 3 because it is a pretty convenient location. And I am pretty sure it's a great place for people who like to purchase over priced, cookie cutter, nothing special furniture for their homes. But you know what, damn it, I'd be lying if I said it deserved 3 stars. In my book, it only deserves 2. And that's MY truth (Thanks Ralph for the encouragement to keep it real!) Ok, so here was my problem with the place- Maybe it's a result of the recession, and the fact that I am broke, but I do not see how this place has such fabulous deals! Yeah, maybe it's great that a couch that WAS $8000 is now $5000, it's STILL $5000!!!!! For a couch. Not a fancy couch dipped in gold, just a couch. It doesn't look any better than something you could find at a discount store, Slumberland, or IKEA even. Sorry, it's the truth. Lamps for $500? WTF? Are you serious? Why would anyone, ever, buy a freakin lamp that costs $500 when you can get one, just as nice, if not more attractive at Target for $24.99? Is it just to say that you bought it from Room & Board? I have nothing against Room & Board. I just think that it's unnecessarily, ridiculously over priced. There's nothing special or unique about the furniture they carry. It's nothing that you can't find else where, for much, much cheaper. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to look outside the box, and don't want my house filled with the same stuff that everyone else's house is filled with. Also, what's with the snotty attitude in that place? My God, it's just a warehouse, relax people, You act like you are a part of some elite club, driving up in your Mercedes, saying things like "Dah-ling, look at this table! Isn't it magnificent!? I have been a R&B fan since postgrad school a decade ago, when I was too broke to afford anything but their cheapest bed (Style: Reading. Size: Full. Quality: Tubular steel, right on). Honestly, I heard that the Outlet was located in the metro before actually moving here and I began to salivate a la a Pavlovian dog. I've already been three times and can't help it...I know that I will go back again. The deals are FANTASTIC. Quality is pretty much what you'd expect from showroom pieces, with perhaps minor defects on the legs and corners, but nothing is trashed (save some dining table tops that could be spiffed with a wax or at most a sanding and refinishing). It is entirely possible to furnish an entire house, if one has the patience and the time to revisit week after week. The upholstered items and desks, media stands, and bedroom furniture all appear to be made in the USA. I saw a few dining chairs and tables that were made in China, and trust me - you *can* tell the difference. I saw the '09 catalog with some letter of commitment to at least 85% American-made furniture. I find this critical especially as our nation lies on the precipice of ruin; yes, their furniture is expensive, but I would rather give my money to support our own economy and our workers and artisans than to China, who would likely sell you an ottoman with foam stuffed full of formaldehyde. In that sense, each piece IS an investment. Sorry, off the soapbox. Back to more mundane advice, from a recent Outlet newbie: -Browse a showroom or their website to get an idea of what you want. Go with an open mind, though! Many pieces are custom orders with non-stock fabrics so you won't usually get the most plain-Jane styles. -Arrive early on Saturday morning, like 9:30-ish. The door opens at 10 and there IS a line by that time. I have done the drive-by drop-off whilst hubby goes to park. I'm the type of girl who'll wake up early on vacation to hog a cabana, though... -Be nice to the guy who opens the door! Especially when it's 1 degree out and he's in his R&B polo shirt. -When you see an item you want, sit on it or hug it or lick it or something to indicate that you claim it as yours. A floor associate will come by, take your name and write a big fat "SOLD" over the tag, handing you its mate to take to checkout. -Glance around and gloat to no one in particular. Giggle with glee when someone comes up and says "Aw man, those Herman Miller Aerons ALWAYS sell first." -Check out and either carry away your newfound treasure or drive your car/truck/trailer/semi up to have the helpful loading guys get your things. OR spend the $79, flat fee, to have them deliver. -Fawn over your quality goodies that were had for a steal. read more

Delivery guys did fantastic job bringing huge armoire upstairs without complaint, despite the daunting prospect of a winding stairwell and a bulky, heavy piece of furniture. Top marks & I hope they are well compensated. The Room & Board items you covet for less than the catalog price? Yes, please! For those of us lucky enough to live within driving distance of the outlet, it's a must stop. People will complain that when they went, "there was nothing worth the money". Well, that's the idea of an outlet. Sometimes it's jam-packed with bargains, other times, not so much. Would I travel just for the chance to browse? Not sure it's worth the gamble, but definitely worth the drive if you're in the Metro and you like Room & Board's products. To be clear, they only stock R&B merch, so if you don't like what they carry, don't go & complain the items were "too plain" (overheard last week) or overpriced (know what the products are beforehand, and the price point. If you don't want them before, don't go.) Items are final sale and you don't bargain on the price. It's a fun place to go! read more

Buying a cheap couch elsewhere only to be replaced several years later by a slightly less cheap couch that could stand to be replaced a year or two later. Ah yes, the ol "you get what you pay for" routine. Whodathunk that it withstands the test of time and furniture? Remember that nice coffee table you bought from R&B 7 years ago? Unfortunately, I live in California, and I'm pretty sure that there is no cost effective way to get outlet furniture from Minneapolis to Berkeley. That being said, if you live nearby, you MUST GO! we purchased a home in minneapolis, but we lived in NYC and northern wisconsin. i ordered a sofa and chair through the R&B store. THIS, before we moved here and discovered the outlet. the same sofa and chair were at the outlet for about half of what we paid and in perfect shape. the prices are incredible and we've furnished much of our home from R&B and vintage shops just so we don't look like a showroom. keep going back to find the stuff you are looking for. it will show up sooner or later. oh and we purchased a sofa there and upon delivery realized it would not get up our narrow stairwell. they took it back and reimbursed us. Having bought some full price Room and Board pieces, I was hopeful to find some real steals here. After 3 trips, they have OK stuff that is still quite expensive. To buy a more permanent piece here, or proceed to discount furniture store to buy a cheaper (insert furniture object name here)? Thus far something new and cheaper from a less prestigious store has consistently won. My wife and I took a weekend trip to Minneapolis. My friends mentioned that I should check this place out over the weekend, and sure enough, it went beyond my expectations. We got there at 9:30 a.m. and we were approximately 30th in line (opens at 10 a.m.). If you want to get there first, plan on getting there around 9 a.m. or earlier. When it was time to enter the facility, it was orderly and people were extremely civil. There are pieces of furniture all over the warehouse, so you have to go into the place with an idea of what you're looking for. Once you "claim" an item (raise your hand), an employee will come by and mark the item with your name. You have to be quick because some items go fast. There were a lot of great pieces of furniture, with significant price reductions on the majority of items (savings can range from $150-$1000+ off, no joke). The best part? $89 delivery for all items if you live within a 100 mi radius of an R and B store. It doesn't get much better than that. If you are coming through the area, this place is worth checking out. The employees are extremely patient and answer any questions or concerns you have. I would gladly come back again. read more

I purchased an amazing table made from Walnut with a granite base....it was originally $2500 and I got it for $600. You need to be sneaky though! The only reason I got this table was because it was placed right next to the register and when I looked at it the cashier said to me "no one even thinks this is for sale because of the placement"...this store is intense. Be prepared to get dirty looks (Minnesota "nice" is thrown out the window here) and the workers are no exception. Most of them are extremely rude (dont even get me started on the lady that is in charge of pick up). When you go there, be prepared for rude salespeople, rude customers AND have a truck. Part of the price cut is dealing with employees that have no intention to help you with pick up. We have several pieces from R & B outlet in our house and are always anxious to go there to look for more good quality stuff. I can't say that I've ever been the first in line, or waited for them to open; I live close enough that I can go back on Sunday if Saturday is a bust, and I can go back next weekend too - just lazy that way, I guess. My partner and I have somewhat disparate taste in furniture style and have found that we most often agree when we are at R & B, so it's always our first and last stop, if you will, when we are seriously looking for something. read more

I just love this place. Yes, it's kind of like a yuppie stampede when they open the doors on Saturday but it's so fun to watch. Occasionally, people run and then jump on the furniture to essentially mark his/her territory until the sales person get there. The furniture is extremely well made and stylish; however, don't assume Outlet means Walmart pricing bc it is not. Larger pieces (ie, beds, dressers, sofas, bookcases, rugs, tables, etc) range mostly $500-$1500 and I believe are mostly returned merchandise. I generally have the best luck when I go later on Saturday afternoon. For instance, I received an $800 all maple with charcoal stain, wood-bottom drawers for $199. The best part is that this is open every Saturday and Sunday. Most of these type of places will host an annual sale, maybe semiannual but this one is each/every weekend. If you have some extra cash and like quality furniture, I definitely recommend! Never done the delivery option but it's available and, I believe, reasonably priced. read more
