I met up with a friend here while visiting from out of town, and she suggested meeting at IKEA specifically to look at their fabric. I was a little skeptical because I thought they had discontinued their fabric line a few years earlier. I was pleasantly surprised that the fabric selection is officially back! The only thing is that you no longer need to cut your own from a bolt; instead, they sell it in precut 3 meter length. The patterns and quality are just as awesome as they used to be, and it is really convenient if you're working on home textiles or quick craft projects. The only drawback to our visit was the timing. My only piece of advice is to ensure you do not arrive 30 minutes before the store closes. IKEA is simply too massive to navigate efficiently under a time crunch, and you will not have enough time to browse properly. Give yourself a solid window to shop! read more

Located within walking distance of the Mall of America, this IKEA has all the usual great items, and an indoor parking lot that will make you very happy throughout the winter. I've been an IKEA fan since they debuted decades ago in the States, and since have been to their stores all over North America and Japan. This one has everything that you would expect, and their customer service was IKEA-level great as always. Had to open our visit with one of their delicious lunch, dining on Swedish meatballs with grave, mashed potatoes, and tasty veggies. It's good pricing, clean, easy. I was so excited that an Ikea was so close to the Mall of America that I knew I had to stop in. I took an uber and spent the better part of Sunday morning walking around the place seeing the sights of what's new with them. The Ikea near me in Michigan's huge, but this is much larger, I swear. I checked out a few items that I had my eye on like storage containers, shelving units and much more. I love the rooms they set up here so you can get a feel of what it's like when it's in your home. Their prices are reasonable and even though you have to assemble it yourself, it usually looks super cute once done. Compared to what furniture costs these days, this place is fabulous. This is a good IKEA. It's especially well matched to the area. It's within walking distance of Mall of America (MOA), for which some of MOA's overflow parking sits right in front of and adjacent to the IKEA property. Then, in what is reputed to be America's most Nordic-centric metro area, that there would be a large and prospering IKEA store is to be expected. This is a stacked IKEA, hence a multi-level store. The restaurant is located on the highest floor. I made several visits to it for meals and used it as a reference point to meet up with a local friend and get something to eat before doing other things in the Twin Cities. The restaurant is about the size of the ones in larger stores. It is very clean. On one side of the restaurant, the tall windows look back at MOA. The staff is helpful and friendly. If they are only using one queuing line, then the wait to get to the food serving area can be a little longer. On one occasion, which is pictured, lunch consisted of the salmon platter, a small side salad, and the lingonberry juice. The salmon platter was definitely good, though I could easily eat two pieces. (That's what buffets are for.) The small salad had very fresh ingredients and there are dressings for your salad placed near the coffee/tea/condiments area. While many berry juices can taste odd or tart, their lingonberry juice is delicious, so I helped myself to a refill. The pricing is much like that at other IKEA restaurants. However, kudos to these folks for making a substitution when they had run out of something. In the salmon platter, the vegetables are mixed beans. Since they had run out on one occasion, they substituted a vegetable medallion. At that visit, my friend was also there and approved of these vegetable medallions I had talked about. It's also a little bit easier to get out of the store without being forced through the "maze" at this IKEA. You get toward the cashiering stands and the exit sooner than in some other IKEA stores. There is plenty of parking. There is parking under the entirety of the underside of the store since it is raised. There is another parking deck at one side. (I don't use the word ramp ... that's what you use to get onto a limited access highway.) There is even some additional parking at grade in front. If you choose to take the Metro (light rail train), the terminus at MOA would only require that you walk a level 2 or 3 blocks to get to this store. read more

On a whim decided to stop by to see kitchens to get an idea for an island and the store is very large. The parking on the upper level outside is the best location to enter main area where carts are and access to main entry. We found our way through the kitchens in awe of beautiful designs and lo and behold we spotted an island for the kitchen that was stand alone. The Vadholma island is a black open base that has two shelves and a thick oak veneer top and a rack you can purchase separately to hang pots from and an extra shelf . I had to pinch myself in the versatility of the island at a perfect 49" long and about 35 wide with seating . You have to buy or use your own stools which we had. It came in two boxes and carts readily available and two gals(us) got it on the cart and was manageable. You can scan and go and by pass the longer lines at self pay registers. It was very easy. Long story short about 1 hour 20 minutes to assemble- picture instructions with no words and all parts fit and were supplied. IKEA restrooms very clean but a long way from food area which was pretty barren, no help around, and no drinks stocked in coolers. That's the reason for four stars. The facility requires a lot of walking to check out but for us worth it. Suggest you are refreshed, not in a hurry and take your time through all the departments You cannot beat the selection, cleanliness of store, daycare while you shop, ample parking and pricing in store. read more

Come on a weekday (evening if you work days) to avoid the crowds. It can be a very peaceful experience if so. The real and faux plants area had a makeover and it is striking! This is the best place to get cheap plants before company comes over to make your space feel staged (or make it look like you take care of plants with a fresh set). Self-check out is easy. I always come to ikea last when searching for space solutions and I need to stop that. They always have what I couldn't quite find online and cheaper. You've got to love a one-stop shop for everything home furniture, home décor, housewares, and linens. It is the perfect place to go when you're putting a home together. I came mostly for recon today and identified a few things that I might be getting in the future. As usual, I perused some of the model rooms and model homes and marveled at the efficiency of Swedish furnishings. It's amazing how much function designers can pack into a small space while maintaining form. Put another way, these small model rooms/homes look both livable and welcoming. I just might have to come back when I am setting up my office/guest bedroom. Of course, while I was here, I had to avail myself of some housewares. I scored a new pillow (IKEA is THE place to get pillows--they have ergonomic pillows, feather pillows, memory foam pillows, adjustable pillows, pillows for every kind of sleeper... it's pretty amazing!). I also got a flat drying rack so that I can finally stop using all of my towels when I wash my sweaters. Add in some milk frothers (again, IKEA is the best place to go for them), cutting boards, and dish towels, and it was an hour well spent. Lightning fast experience at the self-checkout, ample parking, and the east-to-navigate floor that I've come to expect, and I'm a happy camper! read more

My friends have hyped up the Ikea restaurant quite a bit over the years, but I always was full every time I came into Ikea. Finally, yesterday I was hungry enough to want to eat. I ordered the Swedish meatball dinner, a side of macaroni and cheese, a Caesar salad, and a soda to share with my partner. The restaurant is cafeteria style where you grab a tray and grab what you want, and for the hot food, someone will scoop/give you what you want. You then take your tray to the front and pay. The big positive: the food is insanely cheap. We got all that food for only $16 and it left both of us more than satisfied. The Swedish meatballs were great and they lived up to the hype my friends had built up about them. The rest of the food, however, not so much. Nothing was bad or anything, but all of the other food was extremely bland and lacking seasoning. The Mac n cheese has the perfect consistency, but just needed more salt and some flavor. Very similar can be said about the mashed potatoes and green beans. The cranberry sauce was good and so was the gravy. The Caesar salad was very mediocre. Would not get again. Overall, a decent option when you're already there shopping and need a quick, cheap meal. read more

Fine store, relatively easy to navigate, lots of home stuff for a variety of reasonable price ranges. However, beware of the seemingly always understaffed return counter. When entering your info for the return queue, you are given the option to start an expedited return online. This is a ploy and in reality does not expedite anything. You still have to wait in line for your name/number to be called, have them scan a barcode, and go through the exact same return process. Also beware of many, many items being out of stock currently, presumably due to supply chain issues. You are able to check the stock of items online which is sort of nice, but it is not always accurate, so don't get your heart set on your desired item being in the store when you get there. We bought a Malm Twin bed on August 8 which was in stock, to be delivered the 13th. Apparently IKEA doesn't reserve the item you paid for but just waits until delivery day to see if it is in stock. All that arrived was the Drawers for under the bed and the LuRoy slats. Now after three weeks the bed is still not in stock and the item has been refunded to us. But we had bought the bed boxes (drawers) and assembled them. Now we have to return the drawers and buy a different bed (Songesand). Lesson learned -- don't assume that you will get delivered what you paid for! Curiously, the identical Malm bed is in stock in many of the other distant Ikea stores, but not Minneapolis! Good meatballs! Better service! My girlfriend and I made our way around the large but well laid out show floor, and then made some small selections in the warehouse before picking out a couch. There was a small problem with their inventory and while it said there was one couch in stock, when in reality there was not. After waiting for a while before the problem was realized, Mac, the customer service rep we dealt with, was extremely apologetic and did absolutely everything in his power to make things right. Our couch has now been delivered and seems to be decent quality and was a fair price for everything! I'm even happier with the $50 coffee table! read more

I remember when ya had to fight to get a parking spot at IKEA...now...not.The parking lot resembles there inventory.We were enticed on the showroom floor,however we could not find the stuff we liked because IKEA lacked inventory.On our list were lamps,curtain rods and curtains.It was a bear to find anything in stock. The IKEA swedish cafe is in the middle of the retail store. They have many options but this time we were very impressed with their plant based options as my daughter is vegan. Customer service is and has always been excellent. Most of the food served is what is sold in the Swedish Market. Prices are more than reasonable for what you get. The plant balls, plant based meatballs were delicious! They tasted almost exactly the same as the classic Swedish meatballs. They also have plant based options for sides such as mixed vegetables, rice and French fries. The classic Swedish meatballs were amazing as usual! So good with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables! Drink options include coffee & IKEA brand soft drinks. Another thing to note, they offer the same options for kids, just smaller portions. Salads, desserts and cold sandwiches also available but I've never tried them. read more

I'm severely revising my review of this place because apparently my period of mindless adoration has expired. I apologize to anyone who was misled by my first review into thinking the challenges of shopping at IKEA were tolerable. This is a giant home furnishings store with a uniquely seductive design. There are some good items you might really like. In general you won't find either the cheapest or the best items, but there's a sincere attempt to hit that sweet spot in the quality/affordability range. You'll generally have to assemble whatever you buy. I don't mind that part, but it can be a tricky and time-consuming part of the experience. There is always a long, long, long, long wait at the cashiers. There is always a long, long, long, long wait at the returns counter. And it always takes a long, long, long, long time to penetrate the labyrinthine tangle of showrooms to get to what you want to look at. And then, from there, you have to puzzle out where to track down your actual boxed items which are in a different, distant part of the facility. Because of all this, IKEA isn't just a store where you can run a quick errand. You have to carve out significant time out of your day to do anything at all. I recently bought a floor lamp, but I grabbed the wrong kind of light bulb. All I wanted to do was go back and exchange the wrong bulb for a correct one. I waited in the unmoving line at the returns counter for ten minutes, realizing there was no hope of actually getting to the front of the line within an hour, so I gave up. Then I went to go find the correct bulb. OH MY GOD. Fifteen minutes of looking for the correct bulb by myself, followed by fifteen minutes of an employee basically doing the same thing before declaring "we have 300 of them, I just don't know where they are". So I went to a hardware store and bought one, and threw the IKEA one into a garbage can. Back before I hated coming to IKEA, I used to like to work a meal of Swedish meatballs into my visit. You get that at the cafeteria-style restaurant on the top floor, plus they also have a lower-level cafe that sells some snack-bar items like hot dogs. And there's a little shop of Swedish groceries. It would be disingenuous of me to omit the fact that I have about ten furniture items in my house that came from IKEA. That should tell you something. But it should also tell you something that my patience for the process of doing business at this store has worn out. I don't want to come back ever again. read more

While ikea does have some great products for value pricing, it's not worth the headache dealing with the terrible service. We redid a closet with ikea products and had the drawers as a last finishing part. We did an order for pickup and got the notification it was ready. After waiting for over 30 minutes they could not find it and couldn't refill the order so we were left with the only option to do a refund and reorder it. I cooled down and finally went back with my wife to do it a little differently (in store) but same thing. They order is ready, go to pick it up and had to wait another 30 minutes. Hard to justify coming back.. good luck shoppers. read more

Of course the most famous Swedish furniture store in the world is going to exist in the most Swedish part of the United States. Right up here in Minneapolis where all the cold hearted cold skin cold blooded people named Andersson and Svensson and Magnusson live, among the Lakes - or should I say Fjords. Or am I being to Fjordward. You can find some pretty savvy furniture for pretty high prices, but in Europe these prices are actually pretty decent. It was famous for being a high quality discount store. Not so much discount over here in cheap old USA. Some people think it's some of the best furniture in the world. Some people think the cafe has amazing food. I disagree with both of these concepts but I do think it's pretty good in the first regard, and not bad depending on your standards in your taste in the second regard. I have really high standards when it comes to food and while I do like Scandinavian food I don't like dirt cheap generic Americanized Scandinavian food so that's where me and IKEA go our separate ways - but I still like IKEA and I would still eat in this cafeteria and it's a hell of a lot better than American fast food. So hands down this is a great place to get overwhelmed in. I'm all about the place. It's almost like meditation going here looking at all that is offered. Think of it as walking into a Pinterest home furnishing page. Granted, there are times when to experience this place when it is a more relaxing opportunity and let me say that it is not on a Saturday afternoon. For me, it's right after work. 4:45-5pm the place allows you to slowly meander through the offerings. With that being said, I've also picked up a shelf unit and from car to car(check out and all) it took 13 minutes. I've always heard the food is inexpensive and tasty in the restaurant but I've never been. Something about food in a place like that just kinda puts me off, even though I'm hose meatballs smell awesome. Useful tip: don't stop in the middle of the aisle, step off to the side. read more
