My contractor, Ned, and his team saved my sanity this year, as my initial bathroom remodel turned into a bathroom remodel PLUS gut rehab of the kitchen due to a flood in my high-rise building. More details below, but the tl;dr version is the Arete team, led by Ned, was easy to communicate with; had great systems in place for keeping track of everything that was going on; deftly navigated the challenges of working in my high-rise condo while a major riser project was under way at the same time; and gave me a fantastic finished product in exactly the time frame they had promised. I honestly cannot recommend them highly enough. I initially hired Arete just to update my small bathroom in my 1-bed, 1-bath condo in a high-rise. From the minute I met Ned, I knew he listened to me, understood what I wanted and knew which questions to ask to make sure the end result was exactly what I was hoping for. Arete's initial estimate came in a little higher than the other companies I got estimates from, but I had a good feeling about their systems and their great communication, and I am SO GLAD I went with them. When the Arete team came out for the initial walk-through of the bathroom after I hired them, Arete's owner was with them. While he was in my unit, he noticed a significant amount of damage in the kitchen from a flood a few weeks earlier, damage that had been completely missed by a vendor sent out by my insurance company. He encouraged me to contact the insurance company again and request the proper insurance vendors come out on site to investigate. Those investigators eventually discovered a huge amount of water damage and mold behind the walls, which necessitated a gut demo of the kitchen. If the Arete team had not noticed the telltale signs of this damage, I would have never known to push back on the insurance company for additional services, and I would have been living in an unsafe environment as a result. Then, when the insurance vendors gave me the runaround and claimed they couldn't rebuild the walls in my unit for at least three months, Arete agreed to step in and complete the work, and it was done within a week. Then they helped me upgrade my countertops as well. At the same time, they were diligently completing the bathroom remodel (the initial reason I hired them). Throughout that process, they effectively communicated the timeline, contacted me with any hiccups, made sure they got approval for any changes, talked me through the choices, handled all the logistics without my having to do anything (they even picked up some of the the supplies I ordered and stored them for me until they were needed!). They were just generally fantastic to work with. They finished the bathroom in the 5-week timeline they had initially anticipated in their estimate to me. I am SO happy with how the bathroom turned out. Their work was impeccable. So, so grateful for Arete, and for my beautiful new kitchen and bathroom!

After water damage I was looking to replace my floor. It was…read moreharrowing. Some contractors/sales people said they would come and just would not show up. Some were not upfront. Some would not tell me the brand the flooring was. Some just did not know their products. It was all so frustrating. Then along came Charles. My knight in shiny armor. He is sincere, honest and truly cares about your needs. He lets you know if there is a delay or a problem. I felt that I was in good hands. He told me all I needed for the floor. The supplier he deals with is top notch. Then came delivery/installation. I was immediately was put at ease with the worker he sent. I wanted to keep him. He did a nice job installing the floor. As soon as there was a little dust or mess there he was with his broom and vacuum. I love my floor. I did not even have to get use to it. My old floor was dark and this one was quite lighter. I do not expect to have any problems now. If I do I have confidence that Charles and his crew would be right here. Carpeting will be done soon. My plan is to go with Charles again. Skip the fast talkers and go with Nationwide Floor and Windows.

Workers and Partners Very professional team. Excavation, electrical, cement, hydraulic, carpenter, installations and others. They are all very knowledgeable, respectful, polite, and focused on what they were doing. They were working constantly even on snowy days and unbearable low temperatures. Budget It was top-notch. MK has met timeline and budget with fair pricing on any extras, which is extremely rare in constructions. Materials. High quality materials, and I could choose what I wanted as brands and models for siding and interior finishing. I am still and denial my project went so well. Work included adding new bathroom, relocating and rebuilding the kitchen, adding new windows, new electrical, water and ductwork, structural including steel and LVL beams, new columns and joist reinforcements, a 2-car garage, a second bathroom remodel, floor and wall tile work, electrical, new flooring... whew I can't write it all. And let me say in all honesty, we are excessively demanding with details and obsessive with mundane details....and yet Habitar Design still exceeded our expectations! With many downtown condos, our space was small, but Mitch Newman and his design team allowed us to capture the feeling of "home" and express our taste in our new place. We were immediately drawn to Mitch Newman's attention to detail, level of professionalism, brilliant visionary work, and his craftsmanship is truly an artist's work. His background as a physician demonstrates a level of commitment and knowledge, and all his life experiences really allow him to be magnificent in his craft. Quick, what were you doing 130 years ago? Even the nonagenarians I know weren't even a glimmer in…read moresomeone's eye. Well sometime around then, some industrious craftsmen were sawing down oak trees, cutting them into planks and laying down the wood into my floor. So some 47,450 days later (that would be 68,320,000 minutes of steps, weather changes, barometric pressure dips, moving furniture, pets scratching etc, mopping, waxing, insects, new owners, joy, tears and changing seasons), the oak changed into patches of pine and polyurethane stains and here we are. We called in Vintage Flooring to remedy the planks that were cracked, where former patching jobs were failing, and to address the aging yellow stain. They came out quickly, presented us with a quote to replace planks and to replace the entire floor. We selected to replace the damaged section only. They started work but informed us that the floor was too damaged and the entire floor needed to be replaced. Entire process from start to finish was 4 days. Floor looks gorgeous. Minor deductions: change from sections of floor to entire floor (although they cautioned us) shoebase will have to be redone and I found a Budweiser can (empty) outside the room. Nicest floor in the house now. Spoiler alert: more work to come!
