This is probably one of the bigger bars in Oxford with both an upstairs and downstairs. They also often book double bands with one upstairs and one downstairs. The have a balcony that is to the side of the square that can be enjoyable. It seems they always have a decent sized crowd in here and it certainly is worthy of a visit on a pub crawl around the Oxford Square. We were just here briefly but I get the idea that this is a killer dive bar. Plenty of outdoor space to sit and enjoy a drink with your friends and people watch the square. The special was $3 well drinks and $2 beers--one well drink took me a good 45 minutes to wrap up as they pour VERY heavy which was nice. read more

Didn't eat here so no comment on the food, but it smelled pretty good. The music was great, but the upstairs was absolutely packed with people, making it extremely difficult to get drinks. Part of the reason it was so hard to access a beverage was because the place was littered with underage Ole Miss students. The bartenders were also no good. They were too busy fraternizing with each other or chatting with people sitting at the bar to notice the hoard of people trying to throw their money at them from behind the front row. We had a great time hanging out and enjoying the music. Would be much better if they added a few more tables in the upstairs area and trained their bartenders to actually serve drinks rather than stand there trying to look cool. read more

Half rack of immaculately tender, juicy, smokey ribs, plus two sides for $10 bucks. Big portions too. And I eat like a truck driver. The sweet potato fries were crispy on the shell and lovely soft on the inside. House salad was a snore. Green beans cooked to ensure everything of nutritious value was gone. THis is a great place to go on crowded foodball weekends for lunch. The food is pretty good, on the heavy side, but not as heavy as the place next door. Not much option between friend options or heavy cheese and salads. I ended up forgoing trying to be healthy and got the shrimp po-boy with raumalade. IT was good. I also like that they had sweet potato fries. The service was friendly enough, but very slow. We had to ask several times to have our table wiped off because there was sauce from the previous customers. If you get a table by the big french windows you'll be treated to great people watching since you're right on the corner of the square. The bar upstairs is a great venue and it's not usually as crowded as the more popular places. They have a huge side porch with many french doors that make it easy to go in and out for drinks and you can still hear the music if you're outside. This is a bar. Because it is a traditional bar, don't expect over-the-top service. Having said that, I can recommend Rooster's for a beer or two after work on a Friday. You don't have to stay very long to get the sense that this is a bar stop for students and visitors. Snooty Ole Miss faculty members typically stay away from this establishment because they believe it's "NOT A FACULTY BAR." And thank goodness for that! UGH! Riley, the server was very rude. She had my friends and I kicked out after my friend didn't tip on the receipt and called us assholes for not tipping. We were planning on tipping cash to bartender that had been serving us all night. Also, we felt we were overcharged and didn't have a itemized receipt to tell us exactly what we paid for, and when we asked for one she couldn't provided us with one. Went there aa my last night in Oxford after 6 years with great friends and memories... I spent time with Chris from roosters. My bf got kicked out because he accidentally spilled a beer practicing the beer on his head with chris. Thats when the manager came intoxicated and extremely rude. Basically didn't listen to a word I said and kicked me out also while drunk. I called the cops because everything about this establishment is extremely unfair and cruel. You must try the Jalapeño cheese grits!! I had the hot wing sandwich and it was also awesome. My son had the 1lb hamburger and he cleaned his plate. This is one of the places I will go and eat while in Oxford in a future trip. My only complaint was the speed of the service. It took way to long to get our drinks, place an order, get our food, get our bill, and pay to get to the spring game. In a matter of fact, it took a hour and a half--way to long. I went to roosters open minded and super excited for this high class bar but then I came in to the men's bathroom with the pronouns she/them and got kicked out due to being in the men's bathroom. She/them means I am identify as all genders with them and I find it really discriminating against my pronouns to kick me out I've I will never be coming back to roosters, and am extremely upset at how discriminatory this bar this. read more

I came here for after dinner drinks after hearing some good music wafting out of the space from Boure. There was a live band, some alternative rock-type stuff. It was really dark and loud inside except for the area around the pool table and bathrooms. There is a nice balcony, but there are quite a few smokers hanging out on it. The patrons were varied in age - lots of college-aged, but some older middle-aged people hanging out, too. Mostly standing around listening to the music, sitting in groups on their cell phones, or guys clearly trying to pick up women. read more

Not worth the money. The service is TERRIBLE. Very slow service, and bad about refilling drinks and paying attention to tables. As far as the food, it is bar food trying to be fancy. The prices on the dinner entrees are too high. Sure it smells great, but the veggies are over cooked, the girts have been sitting out way too long, and the catfish plate only offers 1 fillet (large, but still, only one). The wings are OK. The bar upstairs is always way to crowded. Definitely would not recommend this place for a business dinner or anything of that nature. read more

I was not impressed with the food here. Quite boring and typical and quite expensive for what it is - glorified bar food. Nothing tastes or looks fresh, just another business warming up prepackaged frozen foods. The beer selection is....meh. Live music would be the only reason to go here, but there is typically a cover. The music is usually what you would expect, typical southern rock or blues with little to no variety. The upstairs is always packed with seemingly underage college students, frat/sorority types who would never be quiet enough for you to hear the music even if you wanted to. The only plus is the outdoor deck. On a nice day during the week when the college crowd is low, it's nice to have a beer outside on the deck. I wouldn't go here any other time. read more

The music is the only good thing about Rooster's Blues House. The beer is never as cold as it should be, and the service stinks. The bathrooms are dirty and in need of repair. Mostly a barely 21 or not 21 crowd with fake ID's. Review your charges before signing also. It could be a really cool place with some sprucing up. read more

We have been to Roosters twice. We will not go back. The service and food on our first visit was OK, but the place was almost empty at the time. On our second visit, the service was inept to the point of ruining our meal & evening out. Inexperienced. Clueless. Inadequately supervised. Same goes for the management with a dose of unsympathetic & rude tossed in. Of that I will say no more, except that what is an acceptable level of performance for serving drinks to college students is not an acceptable level of performance for serving a meal in a restaurant. Regardless of what it looks like when you walk in the downstairs, Roosters is NOT a restaurant. It is a bar that serves food. A college bar. If you understand that, restrict yourself to menu items costing less than ten bucks, like the band playing upstairs, and have an ID, it probably is not a bad bar. read more

As I first opened the beer box covered crickity old wooden doors and entered the dark collegiate brewery I immediately smelled the unordinary scent of beer stained mahogany wood floors. The bar service was quite adequate. I ordered a draft blue moon with a thinly cut orange slice (per request), it felt smooth as it rushed down the back of my throat. The scenery is exquisite. While sitting upon the porch I stared upon the miraculous Oxford Square pondering on what it's like to be a young adult in college these days. I will certainly be back. read more

We'd give this place zero stars but it's not allowed. Seriously, it looks like a fun place but eater beware!!! While our waitress was somewhat attentive, the kitchen staff must be non-existent. Wars were fought, countries were overthrown and babies were born by the time our order arrived! I really do love this bar but i have had nothing but a negative experience with the brunette bartender, Katherine. Extremely rude, and was NO help in finding my lost purse that night (that was taken off the bar top), instead she told me i should "keep better track of my things" and when i told her it had been snatched she called over a bouncer to kick me out. Awful bartending service on her part but everybody else was extremely nice and didn't mind helping. People like this do NOT need to be interacting with other people in an environment like Roosters. read more

Found this place open for Sunday brunch and was impressed with the quality of the food and the service. Great atmosphere including a build your own Bloody Mary bar (don't worry, they will still make them for you if you prefer). I don't really know what most people are looking for in an establishment, but as both a musician and a cook I feel my opinion could be trusted on this place. 1) There is good food on the menu, however, there are some guidelines: A) Their New Orleans cuisine leaves much to be desired. I've lived there. It just doesn't compare. -- Doesn't even come close. B) Same as A only replace "New Orleans cuisine" with BBQ. I hear people say the ribs are good, but I just don't see it. C) Many of the dishes would be better if they didn't use unskilled labor to prepare it. Some actual culinary training would cut down on the likelihood of overcooked veggies and seafood. D) There really isn't a selection of lighter fair. What is there isn't very inspired. By inspired, I mean, no imagination or forethought was put into it and it doesn't taste very good. Get any kind of dressing on the side. E) However, in respect to D, due to the portion sizes it is a great place to go and split a meal. 2) The establishment is not musician friendly. Listed are reasons why: A) Notorious for shorting on pay, underbidding, and breaking contract. B) They have a handful of sound men and only one of them is really any good. C) No equipment elevator - Not fun carrying an 110 lb bass amp or a 130 lb keyboard in case up a narrow staircase. Forget about bringing your organ. D) Don't even think of using their back line. It's just not worth it. Use your own gear. Bring your own cables and direct boxes. Keyboardists, you'd better have your own on-stage mixing board. E) Though employees control the house music, there is a standing "No Reggae" rule for the musicians. Also, much of the employee taste in music is well... yeah. F) Much of what does play there isn't really any kind of authentic blues, though there are some local Hill Country and Delta musicians who occasionally show up. Sometimes you'll find some Rockabilly or some Country, but expect Hard Rock, Southern Rock, Jam Rock, and cookie-cutter Blues-- even Metal. Don't expect to hear Funk, Hip - Hop, Jazz, Latin, Reggae, R & B (odd as the B stands for Blues), Gospel, Swing, and the list goes on and on... Good points food and drink wise: 1) Nothing is absolutely horrible. 2) Try the buffalo chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries or fried pickles. 3) Again, extremely large portions allow for easily splitting a meal. 4) The service is actually typical of the square. We're just a little slower in MS. Calm down. Good points music wise: 1) You can pull a good crowd. 2) Open mic night makes for good live rehearsal. 3) Large stage and a good sounding room. 4) Some real Hall-of-Famers and heavy hitters tend to make appearances. Sometimes, for no cover even. Must-Knows: 1) Avoid on Mondays. It's just not the place to be. The DJ's tend to be bad, there's a cover, and wing special that pales in comparison to that of another bar one block away, 2) Half-Priced Steak Night just can't be beat. 3) Average Oxford Square prices (which are slightly higher than you think they should be, but not enough to complain) read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. Our saga began when we walked in and stood at the front for about 5 minutes, while waitresses and bartenders stared at us, and finally one waitress came to tell us we could seat ourselves. Mind you, they have a sign up that says please wait to be seated. I explained that we had 6 guests and asked if they had any tables that could accommodate us, and the waitress replied yes and began to help us put together three 2 person tables. These tables were very rickety and seemed like they were going to fall apart, as well as them being three different heights. This however, was a very minute detail to us, so we sat down and proceeded to wait for 15 minutes until someone came to take our drink order. Once they finally came it we got our drinks rather quickly, but then proceeded to wait another 20 minutes until our order was taken. Now, mind you, this place was not busy in the least. Upon ordering, 2 members of our party ordered the BBQ and were informed they were out of BBQ. The menu here has 6 items I believe, and I think if you're only offering such a limited amount of dishes then you should have the items there. So, we all ended up ordering chicken tenders and french fries, and one person ordered a sandwich. I believe that we ALL ordered things that could be cooked rather quickly, in a matter of 10-15 minutes, but we did not wait that long. We waited for OVER AN HOUR for our food. Meanwhile, the waitresses, manager, and bartenders sat at the bar conversing, giggling, and EATING food. By the time we got our food, we were NOT happy. We asked the waitress if there was an issue in the kitchen, in which we replied a curt "yes" and proceeded to hand us our food. Finally! We can eat...... or so we thought. The french fries we had ordered were replaced with sweet potato fries without any notice, which no one in our party eats, and another guest and I sent the food back. The waitress was EXTREMELY rude about this and did not ask if we would prefer something else, and when she came back the other guests sent their food back as well. The waitress acted flabbergasted, and we asked to speak to the manager. We informed him of our situation and asked him if he would be so kind to allow us to pay for our drinks and leave, since no one ate their food. We also informed him of the wait, the sweet potato fries, and the chicken that was cold and had a soapy taste. He did not apologize, and brought us our checks with soft drinks on them. Now, I have worked in service and if a guest told me about their experience and it was half as bad as this I would pay for their meal in complete. But no, once again disappointed by the bill, and after another member of our party confronting him about not apologizing, or caring, he informed us he was not the 'real manager' and to just leave. I have NEVER been so disappointed or treated as rudely anywhere. I would NEVER suggest anyone eating there unless you want terrible service, awful food that you wait over an hour for, and a manager who simply did not care about unhappy patrons. I understand that it is a bar, but if you are going for a bar more so than a restaurant then you should simply make the complete move! read more
