I stayed at the hotel for a work trip and Root 29 is the on-site bar/restaurant. The menu was different than what I had seen on their website. But I ordered the Root 29 burger - it was delicious but so big, I couldn't eat all of it. If I was in the area, I would definitely stop in for another meal here! read more

I have now been here 4 times. I waited to write my review because I've had a few different kinds of experiences. The first time was with my brother and his kids over Christmas time. This was the worst of all of the times I've been, and it wasn't terrible, it just was different... and s l o w... we had little kids getting Mac n cheese and it took over 45 minutes. The food, however, was delicious, and the staff was patient with our noisy, unruly, milk drunk crowd. The 2nd time I went and sat at a table myself. It was so slow, but the service was still wonderful. The 3rd and 4th time I've sat at the bar! Perfection. Fast service, good drinks, quick refills and kind service. I'll be back, oh yeah. My husband and I had a long day and wanted something easy for dinner, so decided to try Root 29 since we're staying at the Double Tree. Was a little hesitant to, though, if I'm being honest, because the reviews are so bad. Hubby had a ribeye steak with mashed potatoes and butternut squash and I had a Virginia Ham & Swiss (well, I subbed cheddar) sandwich with fries. Both meals had very generous portions and everything was DELICIOUS! Not sure if something changed between the older bad reviews and today, but definitely recommend trying this place out! read more

This is a new restaurant inside Double Tree in Charlottesville, VA. My husband and I went there for dinner. Very pricey for food that is marginal and service is lacking to the point of almost walking out before a menu hit the table. In addition, the menu is via a tablet, which was sticky and had food splattered on it. The hotel is nice, but honestly, this restaurant needs better management. read more

The restaurant inside the DoubleTree has been completely transformed. Root 29 is sleek, light and bright. I had the Southwest Chopped Chicken salad. It was very good, but overpriced at $14. The bar seemed to be well stocked. My only complaint there would be their happy hour beer specials, Bud Light and a pilsner (not much variety). We sat at the bar and the bartender was very personable. In fact, everyone we encountered was personable and pleasant. Only 3 stars due to the prices. It will be hard to compete with so many restaurants in the area serving similar food but at cheaper prices. read more

I came here with my fiancé during the holidays and had a very nice experience! This review is a little late, but I wanted to make sure that I still left one. The space was small, but the atmosphere was upscale, elegant, and quiet. The menu has nice variety including vegetarian options. A few vegan options would be a great addition. Our experience was a little pricey, but it was expected from the mood set when we walked in. Our food was flavorful and gone shortly after it arrived. Went to visit during restaurant week. This was our first time visiting since the renovation, so we were looking forward to the visit. The space was beautifully remodeled. A lot of natural light, clean, sleek and modern design. However, the restaurant must be going through growing pains because there were many issues that negatively impacted our experience. The service was awful. There was no hostess onsite. We saw several people waiting for some time before they were acknowledged and taken to a seat. Our waitress seemed to be very overwhelmed. We had to request service multiple times (repeat requests for water to name an example). It literally took 30 minutes before we were served our salad. The remaining food eventually came out in a timely manner. Plus side, the food was good, well flavored and hot. The restaurant did not seem overly full. I can't imagine how worse it would have been if it were at capacity...which is want you'd want as an owner/manager. It seems like staffing is a major issue right now. In light of that, the on-site manager needs to be more attentive to the situation in his restaurant. Fill in where needed. Recognize when the people are getting irritated. Leadership needs to work on getting solid team members hired who want to work and show up when needed. Don't be a part of restaurant week if you're not ready! Beautiful restaurant, good food, but until service improves, only a two star location. read more

I came here because there was a lobster roll on the online menu. I got here and no lobster roll on the menu. It took a long time for waitstaff to come to my table. A really long time. I have been coming to the Doubletree for years. Root is the new restaurant. Last night I ordered a burger that was improperly prepared. Today the breakfast buffet took 20 minutes to put out pancakes. I asked for coffee and cream, no cream was brought to me until I asked a second time. While the staff is friendly, I don't plan on eating here again. We are staying in the hotel for a week for a convention so this is an obvious choice to get food. A couple of visits were ok with slow service. A couple resulted in food being sent back as there were items on the burgers ordered not itemized in the description. You would think if you confirm that no mayo is on the burger verbally that they would tell you they come with another sauce. Last night was our final visit and we ended up walking out. 40 minutes after placing our order only the appetizer had arrived and been eaten. We told our server we needed it now as we had to be at various places soon. She then brought out the food except one. One flatbread had coleslaw on it which is not listed in the menu and the person who ordered it does not like coleslaw. I had ordered my sandwich with no mayo and there was mayo on it. It was very light so I suspect they tried to scrape it off after realizing the error but even a little mayo is too much for me. The last order arrived but with 10 minutes to our next events, we told the server that two orders were wrong and we couldn't wait for replacements and my husband was fed up and refused his order. The server apologized and comped the burger and appetizer although we offered to pay for them several times. Later my son-in-law told us he ended up throwing the burger away because the bacon was charred and the burger was raw. He took it with him as soon as delivered to make his event. I have been wanting to try this place out because I drive by the yard signs advertising it everyday. We decided to give it a try during restaurant week. Very bright and cute. When we walked in it was almost 8:00. There was a few tables with customers, the bar was full and there was 7 dirty tables waiting to be cleaned off. The manager came over after we had been waiting for 5 minutes and said he would clean a table. There was several clean tables that he could of seated us at. He did put us by the window looking over the courtyard, but after waiting for 10 minutes I am glad we got some kind of view. The salads were good, but they took awhile to come out. We got a wedge and and a Caesar salad. My main dish was not good at all. I got the Tri Tipp steak it came with mash potatoes and broccoli. The steak was really chewy. My fiancé got the Salmon Filet over rice and Broccoli. He said that it tasted like it had been sitting in a food warmer for 30 minutes. For desert we both got the Chocolate Bomb, it was good. What I could see was there was only 2 waitresses and the bartender. Our waitress did her best. I could tell she was tired, it also looked like she had all the tables. The other girl was just in la la land, walking around. I was really excited to try this place but it was not good. I had high hopes since they have been doing a good job advertising. read more
