This is the only restaurant inside the Doubletree Hotel in Charlottesville, and I must say that the food we had was pretty damn good all things considering. This hotel is in the middle of a college town that has pretty much nothing except Wal-Mart and a Gold's Gym, and it exceeded my expectations for food quality. What I had during my stay there: their traditional buffalo wings, cobb salad, blue ridge BBQ, triple chocolate cake, guacamole, and hazelnut iced coffee. All of these except for the guacamole were enjoyable to eat. The guacamole tasted like artificially mashed avocados and it was overly acidic. I expected salad that was wilted and sandwiches that came out like a plastic mold, but it didn't. It tasted like good food. I docked them one star due to inconsistent service. There was one specific waitress there who gave us so much attitude and stood around the register/computer the entire time. There were other times where the service was excellent, although still a bit on the slow side. It took them a while to take our orders, and screwed up our order as well. We had to remind our waiter to wipe off our table because there were scraps of food and water spots sitting there for a while. Great service and food. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5, is they did not offer any crackers with the chili. However, the chili was really good. I also ordered the white bean dip with sausage croustini and really enjoyed that. The only negative was there was a lot if white bean dip left over. Why don't they provide some bread, crackers, pit chips, anything to enjoy what's left of the bean dip? Oh yeah, since it has been a couple years since I was last here, their menu is on an iPad. read more

HIGHWAY ROBBERY. We were super disappointed with our visit for the Thanksgiving buffet at TJ's Tavern. Our evening started with seeing 7 of the wait staff chatting casually with each other, leaning up against the bar, and not assisting anyone, for the first 12-15 minutes of our visit. One of those same waitresses then came to our table bemoaning how busy it was and she was sorry that she couldn't get to us sooner. Right. She asked for our drink order and brought us two waters and two diet pops. She was kind enough. The buffet food was what you would expect for a buffet. Decent with the typical mac and cheese that had the consistency of Elmer's Glue, soggy green beans under the heat lamp for probably a little longer than they should have been, and hard, cold crescent rolls that would have made the Pillsbury Doughboy shiver in fear. We were, however, expecting a typical buffet, so we weren't too disappointed by the quality of the food. Before we were done with our first visit through the buffet (there wasn't a 2nd visit), the waitress brought us our bill. For 4 of us, it was about $40 per person - really? We definitely didn't get our money's worth in quality, and the food wasn't really good enough to go back for a second helping of anything. What really cooked our twinkie though, was that an obligatory 20% gratuity had been added to the bill, a total of $31.20. The serving of two diet pops and two waters is definitely not worth a $30 gratuity. If someone had actually "served" us, we would have certainly tipped, but there was no service being provided. It. Started with the ribeye steak and calamari appetizer. They came out at the same time, weird, but I went with it. I have to say this was the blandest food I have eaten in a long time. Not sure what flavor the dipping sauce with the calamari was supposed to be but all I could taste was the breading. The steak looked great and came with mushroom "ketchup?" Blue cheese crumbles and a very small half of a Portobello mushroom with a side of grilled asparagus. Again no flavour at all. Waitress offered to get me something else and recommended the bacon Swiss burger with garlic aioli dressing. It was better but still all the flavor was in everything but the beef. I'd love to say that TJ's Tavern is not your typical hotel restaurant. But.... alas... it is. Conveniently located in the Double Tree by Hilton hotel, TJ's prides itself in it's large local beer and wine selection, as well as local fare with a contemporary flair. While their bar selection is impressive and highlights a few local wineries and breweries, the main courses were sadly lack-luster. We entered TJs with no greeting....no "please seat yourself", I ended up having to interrupt a waitress who was punching in a reciept to ask her if we should seat ourselves where she responded with a quick, "yes, sure." Along with the bar area there was a larger room full of dated tables and chairs. We chose to sit at a table by the bar, as there was no one sitting in the larger room. Worrisome for a Saturday night... Anyways, our waitress, Audrey, took our drink orders. I asked for a "Soco Lime" where she declined to clarify, bringing me just a shot of Southern Comfort. Thanks. The table was set nicely, but I was a little thrown off by the center feature. Every table had a bread holder with plates below it, indicating that we would be served bread with our meal. But instead, it sat there empty, taking up space the entire time. The appetizer section was ..meh... so we skipped to entrees. I ordered Braised Beef Chuck Short Rib with mashed potatoes. I figured it was simple, how could they screw it up. My dad ordered Monticello Grilled Pork Loin with roasted pear and mashed potatoes. Here's where is gets weird.... the inconsistency. My entree was served in a bowl. My dad's was served on a plate. Texture wise, very similar dishes. Why were they served so differently? Honestly, it was difficult to eat my beef out of a bowl. Taste wise, both dishes were great. Nothing to write home about, but both were so simple it was difficult to not get it right. But, for $22, I expected much more food... I definitely did not leave full. When Audrey asked us about dessert, I asked about the "Small Bites Selection Presented Tableside". Where she responded, "Oh.... let me see if we even have those plated." Awesome. I love when restuarants advertise something that may or may not even exist that night. She returned with a plate with 3 different desserts on display; a brownie, a lemon tart, and a blackberry cobbler. I chose the lemon tart, which...tasted just like store bought lemon tart. Nothing special. Same with the blackberry cobbler. Both about 3 bites worth of dessert. Overall, TJs tavern is a your typical outdated hotel restuarant... It will fit your needs if you are looking for a quick, pricey bite. You will not leave full but you will feel satisfied. A note to the chefs, Ed and Cordell, luke warm and inconsistent plating is not a spectacular way to spend your careers, step up your game! read more

This bar was in the hotel of the DoubleTree Charlottesville. It's a little better than your standard hotel bar. The drinks are strong and the bartenders are very conversational. The food is pretty good as well. I had the hot wings. It's pretty hard to mess up hot wings and I'm happy that they did not. They were better than average. I realize it's a college town, and if this was a dive bar I'd allow for the stale taste of the beer and quasi-Gardetto's snacks but it's in a premium hotel property. For a hotel restaurant it was terrific. Very cool decor (wood paneled swanky pub feel). The food was delicious. Ribeye steak special came with a salad, 2 sides, and a sundae and it was all around $16. The steak was good. We also had the club sandwich. It was HUGE, and really good. The fries were perfectly seasoned and nice and crispy. Pretty good selection of beers on tap, and the bar itself was well stocked. Definitely would go again if staying at this hotel, and honestly, if I lived nearby, I would probably stop in for a beer and club sandwich. read more

I must say - you wouldn't expect it as a hotel restaurant but the food is pretty good and the service is excellent. I ordered a salad and Brussels sprouts and they were excellent! I wish there was more shrimp on the salad.... and they have a good selection of beer and wine so you literally could hang out all night if you wanted. Great place! My sisters and I were in town for a few days visiting our grandparents and we were looking for a place to get brunch before going to the airport. We were really hungry and just started Google-ing places nearby and we saw this one. We were nervous initially since we weren't guests at the hotel and it looked rather fancy when we walked in. But it was totally fine! Firstly it wasn't busy when we went in so we weren't taking seats away from the guests and the staff was super friendly! Firstly, the omelet bar which was included in the buffet price (only about $12) where you could choose your type of egg (regular eggs, whites only, or subsitute) and cheese and vegetable and meat. The chef was from Russia and was very nice and deftly flipped several omelets around at once! Honestly one of the best omelets for that price. Lastly our waitress, Sarah, was friendly and attentive and since it was close to the buffet closing she gave us to-go boxes and cups so we could stock up! We took advantage of the fresh blackberries and the breakfast potatoes. We we're sure to leave her and the omelet chef a large tip! read more

We were recently snowed in at the Doubletree hotel, and the only place we ate was here. I am allergic to shellfish, and that even had a massive allergic reaction. Outbreaks are uncommon, and I eat regularly at places that serve shellfish. The only way this happened would mean some serious cross-contamination occurred in the kitchen. So, beware of that. This is a bar/lounge in the Double Tree. They serve Virginia beers and wines. I only tried the honey wheat beer, which was amazing. The service was very good each time I went. I ordered the pretzel and beer cheese - big enough for two people and tasty! I also ordered the watermelon salad - a lot bigger than expected and delish! I ordered the tomato pesto panini - it wasn't the greatest, I would pass on it. The coleslaw is not your average slaw, it's a fancy version. I ordered the barbecue sandwich and a side of fries. Very filling and tasty. It's not like your traditional Carolina barbecue with vinegar based sauce, it was a thick sweet sauce - still good though. And lastly, at the recommendation of one of my waiters I had the banana creme brûlée which was fantastic!! I would definitely recommend you eat here if you're at the hotel, but definitely get out and try the restaurants in Charlottesville as well! read more

We went for brunch and it's a hotel brunch. A good hotel brunch, but still a hotel brunch. So you know it's reliable but as a tourist to the area I was disappointed because it didn't give me the feel of something local or unique. Tempted to give this five stars because it's the best Doubletree restaurant I've ever been to. The management here understand what's necessary to complete your hotel experience. They have half a dozen local craft beers on tap. No Buds anywhere in sight. Some great local wines and a food menu that is way better than you expect. Not only are the selections really good but the quality of what I've had so far has been excellent. Tim, the barman, is great. If you don't understand how good this place is then you haven't spent a lot of time in mid level hotels. There's cheap stuff on the menu if you want it but if you travel a lot and want to eat something worth having, this place has it. Wonderful, locally sourced food. We looked over the vegetable garden as we ate dinner. The Watermelon salad was phenomenal and so refreshing. The seafood was fresh and seasoned perfectly. Inside of the Double Tree Hilton Hotel. The bar area is typical of a casual sports Bar. However, if a Casual Sports bar is not your scene they also have a formal dining area with linen table cloths. I arrived at 10 pm and was offered a full menu. This establishment remains open until 11 pm for the weary late night traveler. Ordered 2 appetizers. Total with tax $21. The shrimp and grits and the Fried Green tomatoes. Of the 2, the Shrimp and Grits were the most tasteful. Three shrimp on a rosemary skewer that were lightly grilled and four deep fried grit balls served with a tangy tomato based dipping sauce. The only downside was the texture for the breading of the grit ball was a little tough in some areas. The Fried Green tomatoes, three of them served with a red tomato/onion relish and topped off with a white sauce that tasted like plain sour cream. The breading on the green tomatoes were too thick. The green tomato was not fresh and had a reminiscent taste of a pre-sliced tomato that had been sitting in the refrigerator for awhile. Did not care for the onion and tomato relish that was served on the top of the fried green tomato nor the white sauce. It looks delectable but the taste is lacking. With what can only be described as Oliver Twist gruel, the broccoli cheese soup started it all off wrong. Salt and saltine crackers couldn't even bring flavor back to this bland mucus. Awful. That was followed up with a crabmeat asparagus Mac and cheese. I already ordered my soup, but apparently they wanted me to have another. Runny, slimy, tasteless, cold in the middle, hot on the outside, avoid it at all costs. I couldn't hardly eat either one of those so I figured 3's a charm and ordered the apple cobbler. How you screw up a dessert is beyond me. Restaurants who leave the skin on the apples in an apple cobbler, should be taken out back and skinned themselves. Not sure what they used to season the cobbler, but it wasn't flavor. Combine that with drinks where I had to ask the bartender in all seriousness if he forgot to add the alcohol to my Coke...he didn't. The only reason they didn't get one star, which the food deserves, is the staff was friendly enough however inexperienced. Save yourself some money and get a better meal at McDonald's...from a trashcan...in the bathroom. read more
