Quick response! The pricing for a new toilet was quite high, but they did get the work done promptly.

    Smith's Sewer Service

    (43 reviews)

I feel sorry for Smith's Sewer Service…read more Thirty-one years ago I purchased this house and have lived here since then as a single-by-choice woman. During that time I've asked Smith's Sewer Service to help a handful of times with a project, and they always did a very nice job. That was not the case, however, a few months ago. In August, 2024, I needed them again at which time they sent a tech who also needed a plumber to complete part of the project. That plumber worked at Priority Plumbing, and he completed the requested plumbing work very quickly. Everything went well. One of them asked me in the presence of the other individual to pay the entire bill due to Priority Plumbing, which I did in three or four days' time. Then this year I scheduled another project with Smith's by email, but I soon received a follow up email saying they would no longer provide service to this property, because my account had been "deactivated". I had no idea what that meant. So when I called to ask why my account had been deactivated, their office manager, "Heather", said, and I quote, "I don't know, but we must have had a good reason." OK. So in my effort to seek further clarification, I spoke by phone with "Bill in the shop". When I asked him the same question, he said, and I quote, "I don't know, but we must have had a good reason." Feeling under obvious and understandable attack, I emailed them numerous unsolicited documents that provided evidence of my good standing with my bank, which I've been with for over 50 years; my FICO score which literally cannot get much higher than it is, etc, etc, etc, etc. Then I must have asked the "magic question". When I asked Smith's if they received the payment they were owed for their share of the work from the 08/2024 project, their tone changed entirely to one that was irritable and defensive. Begrudgingly, "Bill in the shop" refused to answer that question but agreed to provide service at this address once again. However, by that time, given everything they chose to put me through for so many days after so many emails and so many phone calls, I told them I would take my business elsewhere, and I wished them all well. I still do not know why my account was deactivated. It must be that some things in this life are just not meant to be understood.

UPDATE: We received a call from them with excuses as to why the supervisor never called back, but…read moreyet NO ONE called us back at all. I believe it was Elizabeth called about a potential refund for the yearly package we bought and a potential refund the for hotel stay due to their plumber leaving our pipe leaking and we weren't able to us our facilities. She was to call back.....nothing. Why even call in the first place? On 11/20/2025 they came out to blow the pipes as routine maintenance. Prior to coming out we discovered that there was a back up in our line and asked him to take a look at it. He informed me that it would cost $150 to run a camera, I agreed. He went down to go into the pipe and found out he could not get in and had to saw off the valve and needed to go get a new one which would cost about $25. Again I agreed, and asked you promise me it won't leak as we have NEVER had a leak he said no worries. Fine. He saws off the valve ran a camera and then put the new valve on. Advises us that the pipe is blocked by tree roots according to his camera. The video that was provided shows no tree roots and no blockage. He actully didn't even get the camera far enough out. Said that it was blocked and his supervisor Justin will call us in the morning to go over options. I handed him my card and paid. We decided to stay in a hotel that evening as using the plumbing was not an issue. It is a good thing we did. I went and looked at the job, the valve did not seal and was leaking water, one flush and it would have been horrible. I then looked at my bank account and was charged $250 for something that was supposed to be $175. We made SEVERAL calls to the supervisor Justin and we are still awaiting that call back. We did get in contact with Elizabeth at the office and she did assist us sending out another plumber to correctly seal the pipe and she did get me a refund for the overcharge. She was very nice to deal with. We have since had to go with another plumber to get our needs taken care of. Which is NOT tree roots but a broken pipe. I would not recommend this company.

Beware of Golden Rule Plumbing Heating and Cooling!!!!!!! I had a tech come out to check out my…read moreHVAC system and quoted me $1000+ on a part that cost around $100 to replace. BUT that's not the WORST part. The tech proceeded to tell me it would not be smart to invest in a system that would need to be replaced soon and that he can get a "System Engineer" (Sales Person) out here in the next few minutes since he is in the area. How convenient? Later I realized I that the System Engineer Sales guys park around the corner on purpose just in case the Tech calls them out. They have a few of these system engineers sales guys that way when Techs are doing service calls, they always have a sales guy (system engineer) in the area. I end up agreeing to have the system engineer "sales guy" come and give me a bid since it did not cost any extra. They both went down in the basement where the furnace was located and started measuring everything it took about 10 minutes for them to complete their measurement. Once they completed measurement, they came upstairs and asked me if I had a few minutes to discuss a few options on their tablet. They both proceeded to tell me how terrible my system was and that it needs to be replaced ASAP. Keep in mind it has been working absolutely perfect all last summer and great through this winter so I was a little skeptical about it suddenly going bad. They told me I can replace the furnace, but replacing both the furnace and the air conditioner at the same time is more beneficial financially. They showed me roughly around six options starting anywhere between $13,000 all the way north of $18,000. After seeing all of my options with Golden Rule, I told the guys that I want to get a couple more bids from a few more HVAC places. This is where my blood begins to boil.... The sales guy, a.k.a. the system engineer started his sales pitch stating that "getting multiple bids is actually not beneficial for the client" and that "it's not like the old days where every HVAC company was honest". He then proceeded to pull out paperwork and small objects stating that they are the only ones that use these reliable parts/material. Which got me thinking how do all these other HVAC companies exist and are successful if Golden Rule is the only one that uses top quality material and parts. It was incredible high pressure but when they noticed I wasn't budging on getting multiple bids, they tried to push the repairs down my throat just to walk away with something!!!!! When I declined, they ended up leaving very bothered and kept insisting that after I get the other quotes to call them and give them another chance..... I ended up calling two more HVAC companies to come and check out my system one being Schaal and the other being Des Moines Comfort and to my surprise, it was a completely different story. There was nothing wrong with my HVAC system as they showed me the air coming in and the air going out the temperature difference. Only one small piece had to be replaced and it was a couple hundred dollars. Please keep this in mind next time you need help with HVAC, and I can only imagine how many people thought that their systems were bad and ended up buying a whole new system from Golden Rule for tens of thousands of dollars. Always call multiple companies!
